Colin Bundred: Do I detect a little common sense creeping into handball decisions?

PX: The rules are stricter to disallow a goal than to award a penalty.

How is that not a penalty? you can't give a penalty to Liverpool against Fulham and then not that, Do they just pick and choose when its a penalty and when it's not. Had enough of VAR if they're going to use it then use it properly.

  2. HALF-TIMEpublished at 18:46 Greenwich Mean Time 15 December 2020

    Wolves 0-0 Chelsea

And so we go in goalless.

Wolves tend to be better in the second half of games and Chelsea have failed to score at all in their three games in which they've had one or fewer shots on target in the first half this season (v Liverpool, Man Utd and Spurs).

  3. HITS THE WOODWORKpublished at 45 mins

    Wolves 0-0 Chelsea

What a header! Kurt Zouma is unmarked and rises majestically to thump a header on goal - but it comes back off the junction of post and bar and out.

    Where was the marking?

Again, that's almost great from Chelsea as Kai Havertz unlocks Wolves with a disguised reverse pass. Christian Pulisic flashes in a cross but it's between a gaggle of bodies and Wolves can clear the follow-up.

    Wolves 0-0 Chelsea

It's almost a good game this, as both sides are almost doing some nice things. More great play from Kante wins the ball back, Christian Pulisic runs into the box but he almost beats the last man and instead can only get a corner.

Ruben Neves threatens to unleash a booming long-ranger but N'Golo Kante arrives on his blindside and strips the ball from him. His special move, the Kante version of the Hadouken.

I haven't the slightest hint of a clue what is handball or offside any more Matt. Just have to wait and see every time.

Sorry, is the rule not if the ball touches the hand when the hand is above the shoulder then it's a handball and a penalty? What's the point of these rules if they're not implemented?

He's not as good, yet, but there's something very Eden Hazard-esque about the way Christian Pulisic runs at defenders and chops inside. He wins another free-kick from Nelson Semedo.

Definitely not a penalty for me. Conor Coady and Olivier Giroud fighting to get the ball. Giroud was just trying to get above Coady, heads the ball onto his arm and for me, never a penalty.

Hang on, was there a handball in the box from that free-kick?

VAR wants to review the tapes - and the ball does hit Conor Coady on the hand but he can know nothing about it. He was trying to win a header and was wearing Olivier Giroud as a backpack.

No penalty given, common sense restored. That may have been given not so long ago though...

Wolves have grown into the game in the last 10 minutes.

They are starting to get a little bit more possession and when they are getting up and in and around the final third, Neto, Silva, Podence are all showing their individual quality.

Good block! Chelsea float in a free-kick Olivier Giroud nods it down to Timo Werner and his effort is well charged down.

  14. Postpublished at 29 mins

Chelsea are just guilty of taking a touch too much at the moment as they waste the chance of a counter by being too careful in the middle third. Ruben Neves shows them how it's done with a booming long pass over the top and then Fabio Silva buys a foul from N'Golo Kante with another really neat flick.

The rotation between Chilwell, Mount and Pulisic is outstanding for Chelsea. They understand when one needs to go inside, when one needs to give the width but what I like about that left-hand side is how early they are crossing the ball in. Giroud must be delighted with that.

No love for OG? A fine player for me, I think he makes others play better around him too. Timo Werner could do with going more central though surely - he's swapped wide left for wide right tonight.

Jacobs: Olivier Giroud is just an impact player. Lampard should know this and keep the French striker where belongs - the bench.

Chelsea are doing a good job of pushing Wolves back into more or less a permanent back five. Semedo and Marcal are definitely more full-back than wing-back. I wonder if Adama Traore will be unleashed at any point.

  19. CLOSE!published at 23 mins

    Wolves 0-0 Chelsea

And now Wolves go close! Fabio Silva, with the look of a young Julian Casablancas, flicks delightfully into the path of Pedro Neto and he lets fly with a left-footed strike from fully 20 yards that requires a diving stop from Edouard Mendy.

    The game is livening up!
