Anthony Martial has now scored on all seven days of the week in the Premier League for Manchester United.

He's the fifth player to manage that, after Ryan Giggs, Andrew Cole, David Beckham and Wayne Rooney.

His well-taken goal is the difference at Old Trafford.

Both sides have had great chances to score in the opening 45 minutes, but it's the hosts who hold a narrow advantage.

Villa will feel confident they can get at least one in the second half.

Really entertaining first half that.

Two minutes of injury-time to come at the end of the first half.

Aston Villa have responded by immediately going after an equaliser before the interval.

United have everyone back behind the halfway line to deal with the pressure as they look to take their advantage into the break.

It started with Pogba winning a challenge in his own half and it is a real striker's finish from Martial. He has got in between the two Villa centre backs. Absolutely perfect from a striker's point of view.

Ah, it's a big waste by Bertrand Traore. Nowhere near the target.

We haven't seen too much of him so far this evening, but Bruno Fernandes is inches away from the opener there.

Fernandes takes a touch to set himself and then whips a shot towards the far top corner. Emi Martinez is nowhere near it, but it's just too high.

Michael Reid: Eric Bailly is easily United's best defender. Very athletic, good reading of the game and clearly not afraid to get stuck in. Hoping he can stay fit and build from here

Villa force their fourth corner of the match so far but United's defence continues to stand firm in front of David De Gea.

Scott McTominay tries to carry United upfield, but he's forced off the ball as Villa get back in numbers. He wants a free-kick, but I don't think he really expected one.

Nine shots recorded by Manchester United so far, but just two on target.

Villa have managed two shots in total, and are denied a third as Harry Maguire manages to prod a low ball into the United box away.

This is very open so far.

Paul Pogba is drifting off his flank and delivered a superb pass over the top of the Aston Villa defence then which Emiliano Martinez had to rush out of his box to clear.

But in finding space to be creative, Pogba is also leaving space for Villa to attack.

Fascinating stuff.

Paul Pogba takes a hit at the corner he won for his side.

The United midfielder has some blood coming from his mouth and will leave the field as that is cleared up for him.

It's been a positive performance by Pogba so far.

Approaching the half hour mark and both sides will feel like they can go on and win this.

The momentum has swung back in United's favour these last few minutes though, and more good work from Paul Pogba earns his side a corner.

Marcus Rashford sees his shot blocked as United manage to break forward for what feels like the first time in a while.

Much better from the hosts, who attack again but Scott McTominay's pass is behind Anthony Martial and slows things down to Villa's delight.

Eric Bailly rushes across to head a cross from the right out for a corner.

United are winning the aerial battles at the moment though and are dealing with set-pieces without much trouble.

Really nice tempo to this.

Anwar El Ghazi gets goal side of Aaron Wan Bissaka as Villa work it down the left again, but he can't pick out a team-mate.

Dean Smith will be very pleased with how this is going so far, his team are looking the more likely to find the breakthrough at the moment.
