    FT: Everton 0-1 West Ham

    West Ham United

West Ham boss David Moyes speaking to BT Sport: "It certainly was [a good way to start the year]. To come to Goodison Park and get three points and to play as well as we did... We got the reward for it.

"The players have played three games in six games, they are amazing. I don't think there was any difference in the fitness levels so great credit to the players, there has been a big change in the mentality here at West Ham."

On Tomas Soucek: "He has been very important. I think he's played better than he did tonight but if he keeps coming up with goals I'll be very happy.

"It was important to get something from this. It was our third game in six days. We asked the players to do it and they did a brillint job. We have been playing games while missing important players so we have been juggling around trying to find the right balance. Tonight we had a good balance and it gave us a good chance of winning."

On death of former Scotland manager Tommy Docherty: "It's an incredibly sad time. We have seen so many recently unfortunately and he's another one. My memory of him is as a young Scottish manager growing up in Glasgow. I was fortunate enough to meet him a few times and he was always very pleasant and supportive. It's sad so I pass on my best wishes to his family."

Manchester United v Aston Villa (20:00 GMT)

Yep, Aston Villa's last victory against United in the Premier League came at Old Trafford back in December 2009 - their only win in their past 43 top-flight meetings.

It's also Villa's only victory in 33 competitive away games against United, since 1983.

But, after last season's corresponding fixture ended 2-2, Villa can remain unbeaten in consecutive Premier League matches at Old Trafford for just the second time.

The last time that happened was in 1997.

This is another tough game for the home side because Aston Villa have been extremely good, but I think being so close to Liverpool at the top will help United's cause.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side have got something about them at the moment that is helping them get across the line in games, and they only have to look at the table to know they are in the title race.

United haven't really got going yet either and, although you could say the same about a few teams, they are probably looking around thinking "you know what, this league is there to be won".

    Prediction: 2-0

Manchester United for the Premier League title?

    Aston Villa heading for Europe?

Let's get your thoughts on where these two sides are going to end up this season via #bbcfootball and, if you're in the UK, on 81111.

  6. 'Villa can push for Europe'published at 19:37 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2021

Manchester United v Aston Villa (20:00 GMT)

    Stephen Warnock
Ex-Leeds and Liverpool defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

I believe Villa can push for Europe. I think there’s an element of trying to keep the squad fit and fresh, their first XI is extremely good and there are a few back-up players that will add to that as well.

It might just come down to their squad size that might keep them out of it. But then you think about how well they are doing at the moment - they have had suspensions, injuries, a key one to Ross Barkley, plus Tyrone Mings being suspended for the last game

Dean Smith’s recruitment in the summer was key to everything they did.

Everyone talks about Grealish being the key signing, re-signing his contract but I think the key signing for them was Martinez in goal – when you have a quality goalkeeper who can almost guarantee you 10-15 points a season, it breeds confidence into the back-line.

  7. Man Utd aim to move level at the toppublished at 19:34 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2021

Manchester United v Aston Villa (20:00 GMT)

Victory for Manchester United tonight can take them level on 33 points with bitter rivals Liverpool at the top of the Premier League.

A win for Aston Villa, though, would take Dean Smith's side up to third - four points off the lead and still with a game in hand...

    Thanks very much Emma.

Right then folks, it's over to Old Trafford for us now, but we'll continue to bring you reaction to West Ham's win at Everton.

  9. Postpublished at 19:30 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2021

    FT: Everton 0-1 West Ham

So that result takes West Ham level on points with Aston Villa, Chelsea, Tottenham, Manchester City and Southampton.

Everton remain four points off the top. Tight as anything.

Manchester United v Aston Villa is up next so there's going to be more movement. Harry Poole is here now to take you through that match. See you later!

  10. 'A very big win for us'published at 19:28 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2021

    FT: Everton 0-1 West Ham

    West Ham United

West Ham goalscorer Tomas Soucek speaking to BT Sport: "It's a very big win because we started this year like this so we are very happy. It's really important. Hopefully we can carry on.

"Maybe we created more chances and more spaces but they kept more of the ball. We showed our spirit because we wanted to win for all the 90 minutes. I think we decided it at the end.

"Normally I have three weeks off so it was different for me. I love to play football during Christmas time though so it was difficult games for us and it's good for us to get three points now."

  11. FULL-TIMEpublished at 19:23 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2021

    Everton 0-1 West Ham

A huge roar from the West Ham players. Big three points for them to kick-off the new year.

    Disappointing performance from Everton.

  12. 'A lesson for the Everton players'published at 19:22 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2021

    Everton 0-1 West Ham

    Stephen Warnock
Ex-Leeds and Liverpool defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

The big thing from an Everton point of view is when you're in a game like this, don't lose it.

You're not playing well, your key players haven't performed. The best thing to do is take a point and regroup.

It's something the Everton players will have to learn from. Stay in the game and be difficult to beat if it's not your day.

Michail Antonio is one-on-one with Yerry Mina. He looks to have got the better of him but he takes an extra touch in the box. Why didn't he shoot?

Mina gets back to slide in and block. There's people falling over everywhere and Aaron Cresswell then fires it over the bar from a tight angle.

Errr, that was all pretty clumsy!

  14. Postpublished at 90+1 mins

West Ham currently level on points with Aston Villa in fifth.

They have two minutes to hold on.

    Everton 0-1 West Ham

    Stephen Warnock
Ex-Leeds and Liverpool defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

Tomas Soucek timed it perfectly. Everton switch off and they don't see him coming. It's a simple tap-in in the end.

Everton need to come out and make something happen now. They need their key players to perform.

Tomas Soucek does well initially to control the ball in the box and get a snap shot away.

It's a tight angle but he hits it with pace and Jordan Pickford can only parry it at the front post.

It's half-cleared to Aaron Cresswell. His shot takes a big deflection off Yerry Mina but Soucek chases it up and picks up the rebound to poke it in at the back post.

Manchester United v Aston Villa (20:00 GMT)

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer makes four changes from the side that eked out a 1-0 win over Wolves on Tuesday.

Anthony Martial comes in for suspended Uruguay striker Edinson Cavani, who begins a three-match ban for a social media post containing offensive language.

Fred, Scott McTominay and Luke Shaw are United's other three changes, replacing Alex Telles, Nemanja Matic and Mason Greenwood as United bid to extend a nine-game unbeaten domestic run.

Manchester United XI: De Gea, Shaw, Bailly, Maguire, Wan-Bissaka, Pogba, Fred, McTominay, Fernandes, Martial, Rashford.

Subs: Henderson, Telles, Tuanzebe, van de Beek, Matic, Mata, James, Lingard, Greenwood.

Aston Villa, meanwhile, make just one alteration from the side that drew 1-1 at Chelsea on Monday as Tyrone Mings returns from a one-game ban to replace Kortney Hause at the heart of the visitors' back-line.

Jack Grealish skippers Villa against a United team that were heavily linked with his signature in the summer but there is still no sign of Ross Barkley, despite the England midfielder recently returning to training after shaking off a hamstring injury.

Aston Villa XI: Martinez, Cash, Konsa, Mings, Targett, Douglas Luiz, McGinn, Grealish, El Ghazi, Traore, Watkins.

Subs: Heaton, Taylor, Guilbert, Hause, El Mohamady, Hourihane, Nakamba, Ramsey, Davis.
