Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster: "I was a bit rusty, my first 90 minutes in 10 months and a clean sheet!

"They have got so much quality they can open you up at any point but the lads in front of me were brilliant. They threw their bodies on the line.

"Being a goalkeeper is a hard position at the best of times, to step into a game against the champions is tough."

5 shots on target in 270 minutes of football. That's one about every hour. Since Jota got injured, our attacking output has been shrivelling (the Palace game is an outlier, has to be taken in isolation). It's already been pointed out, but Trent's drop in form this season is a critical issue. The winger and fullback in this team work in tandem; if one is off, they both are. Hence why Salah is underperforming of late as well. We need Trent back to his best and quick.

    Tom, Rugby

Well done Southampton you deserved that. No excuses now...this current liverpool squad, regardless of injury, is good enough to walk this league. Could easily be 9 points clear by now. Not to be I'm afraid.

  3. 'You need the perfect game'published at 22:26 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2021

    Southampton 1-0 Liverpool

    Southampton

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl to BBC Sport: "There were tears in my eyes - because of the wind! When you see our guys fighting with everything they have it makes me really proud. You need to have the perfect game against Liverpool and I think we did have that.

"It felt like we were under massive pressure and the defending around the box was the key today - then still try and play football. We did it in a good way.

"It was an intense game, my voice is nearly gone. The guys are tired, you have to be to win against such a team. The guys believed in what they were doing.

"In the 92nd minute I thought, OK, it can be something for us. It's a perfect evening."

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson on Sky Sports: "Starting slowly in games is not us. We didn't score again, we've had chances and not put the ball in the back of the net in the last two games.

"We knew they would come out fast but we were sloppy, we gave away one or two free-kicks and you get punished in this league.

"It's difficult in a different position, I just tried to do my best."

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher, speaking as a pundit on Sky Sports, says: "I can't see Liverpool winning the league if they don't bring in a centre-back.

"It's a really tough ask if they don't bring anyone in.

"The fact they played Jordan Henderson at centre-back is not going to do a lot for the two lads on the bench (Rhys Williams and Nathaniel Phillips) and their confidence if they have two midfielders playing there.

"Henderson is not a centre-back. He did well, but it's not his position."

  7. 'Great to be in this position'published at 22:17 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2021

    Southampton 1-0 Liverpool

    Southampton

Matchwinner Danny Ings tells Sky Sports: "We knew it would be tough and it was so important that we were disciplined when we didn't have the ball. To get the result we did was huge.

"We all know how good Prowsey is on set-pieces and all the parts came together and luckily I got the goal. We had a chat before the game to see if there was a moment where we could get in quickly and luckily it paid off. Overall we're really happy with the performance.

"It's great to be in this position. The last couple of seasons have been very difficult at this time and to have this start this year is great but we are going to try to keep improving. We don't want to stand still, we want to keep going."

On manager Ralph Hasenhuttl, Ings adds: "He is very passionate and he brings that passion into the game and it's great for us to see that. The manager has got us all working our socks off and it's really paid off."

Liverpool fans will bang on about injuries, but the lack of creativity in the team is killing their season. If the fullbacks don't perform neither do Liverpool, and the long ball over the top has been sussed out so the front three are all on their own.

    Kevin in Norwich

The problem is Liverpool have no plan B with injuries hamstringing them and the front three looking burnt out it's going to be a shootout between both Manchester clubs for the title and that's heartbreaking as a Liverpool fan

  9. 'It's not rocket science'published at 22:13 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2021

    Southampton 1-0 Liverpool

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp to BBC Sport: "What was disappointing? How long have we got - the start obviously. Not only the goal but the start in general. Congratulations to Southampton they deserved it.

"You know exactly what you are going to get from them, you cannot be surprised but we looked surprised. At the beginning how we played, where we lost the balls, it's not rocket science. We should have done much better. We played into their hands with the start.

"They put a lot of work in. Our decision making was just not good. That is how it is when you don't have momentum. We should have had much more chances.

"These are outstanding players but they were not ready from the start. Sadio Mane should have had a penalty tonight, and there was the handball - I've no idea.

"It's not an excuse for the performance but you can get a point if they are given. Now we have to show a reaction."

Nathan Bright: I mean, what a job Ralph Hasenhuttl has done at turning that team around. Is this spoken about enough?

Chris Lord: Ward-Prowse best dead ball specialist in the PL. I’d take him in my squad for the Euros having a fantastic season!

John Dunthorne: Significant result tonight. I really think we can now say that the title race is wide open!

  13. 'No cutting edge'published at 22:01 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2021

    Southampton 1-0 Liverpool

    Karen Carney
Former England and Chelsea winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

Ralph Hasenhuttl is crying, totally emotional and I'm a bit emotional watching that reaction.

Whatever reason he is emotional, his players did him proud and they deserved the three points.

In the first half Southampton were the better team in possession. They got the early goal, they were bright, energetic and Liverpool didn't really get going. Jurgen Klopp was shouting at his players and it was a brilliant first half performance from Southampton - winning the first balls and second balls.

Liverpool were dominant in the second half with 75% possession but they didn't really do anything with it and there was no cutting edge.
