Manchester United could take the lead in the Premier League next week if Liverpool fail to win today. The last time Man United were Premier League leaders this far into a season was in 2012-13, when they won the title.

    Southampton 1-0 Liverpool

Loser92: In case anybody has forgotten, the Saints were 2-0 up at home to Manchester United just a few weeks ago, and tamely submitted to the Red Devils before full-time. It’s early doors at St Mary’s.

Paul Walmsley: Wait, what? How is that not a handball? Unnatural position, away from his body. We know from previous decisions that distance doesn't matter.

Colin Bundred: As a Liverpool fan I'm glad to see that claim for a handball penalty turned down. Common sense at last.

  4. CLOSE!published at 62 mins

    Southampton 1-0 Liverpool

Sadio Mane is the danger man against his old club. He gets away on the left again and flashes in a cracking ball that deflects away from Fraser Forster and the far post.

  5. Postpublished at 59 mins

    Southampton 1-0 Liverpool

Kyle Walker-Peters must have been a bit nervous as he steps across the run of Sadio Mane and the forward goes down.

There's no real appeal though and VAR doesn't get involved. No penalty.

  6. Postpublished at 57 mins

    Southampton 1-0 Liverpool

Liverpool piling on some presure now, Sadio Mane finds a pocket of space at the far post and gets a low shot in but Jack Stephens slides in to make a cracking block.

    Can Southampton hang on?

  7. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 57 mins

    Southampton 1-0 Liverpool

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who has been pretty anoymous to be honest, is replaced by Xherdan Shaqiri.

Xherdan Shaqiri is about to come on for Liverpool, as Southampton have a better spell.

For me I thought it was a handball. He went to block the shot and it hit his arm. I've seen them given and also not given.

    Southampton 1-0 Liverpool

Liverpool force another corner but Southampton look solid at setpieces at the moment.

  12. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 50 mins

    Southampton 1-0 Liverpool

Strong penalty claims from Liverpool as Gini Wijnaldum hits a shot and it's blocked by Jack Stephens.

It hits the defender on the hand as he turns away.

VAR has a look and we play on. That would have been given a few months ago wouldn't it?

    Southampton 1-0 Liverpool

LavigneFFXIV: This is exactly how the league played out last time Leicester won it, I'll be surprised if another "outsider" doesn't win it again. It's up for grabs and for some teams this might be their only chance for a very long time to do so.

Phil Ainley: Gotta agree with MRM, the Reds have been lacklustre since Jota got injured, but who do they get in? Which creative players are available?

  17. Postpublished at 21:01 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2021

Alisson hasn't bothered going in the dressing room with the rest of the Liverpool players, he's doing some warm-up exercises instead.

    Expecting any changes from Jurgen?

  18. 'A joy to watch'published at 20:57 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2021

    Southampton 1-0 Liverpool

    Karen Carney
Former England and Chelsea winger on BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra

Stuart Armstrong has been the best player on the pitch by a country mile. He has worked tirelessly and in possession everything has been forward, forward, forward.

Southampton have been magnificent, everything about them. In possession, they have been outstanding, they nearly had a great chance at the end and they've been so brave and every pass has been forward.

Every time Liverpool have gone direct and tried to get the second ball, a Southampton player has got there first. Southampton are a joy to watch.

Liverpool at the moment have been poor but have been in second or third gear and are still very much in the game.

  19. Postpublished at 20:52 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2021

    Southampton 1-0 Liverpool

Liverpool have only won one of their last nine Premier League away games when going in at half time behind.

They don't go behind at all very often.

  20. HALF-TIMEpublished at 20:50 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2021

    Good half.
