John Lundstram now has a shot charged down after good work down the left from Rhian Brewster. Can Sheffield United make that breakthrough?

  3. Postpublished at 60 mins

    Sheffield United 0-0 Newcastle

Decent effort from Jayden Bogle, who's looked exciting all night. He cuts in on to his left foot and shoots - there are so many bodies in the way though and it flies wide in any case.

    Wolves v Everton (20:15 GMT)

Wolves make just the two changes to the XI that started in the 1-0 cup win over Crystal Palace.

Goalkeeper Rui Patricio returns and midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White makes his first start since returning from his loan spell at Swansea.

Everton start without an obvious striker with leading scorer Dominic Calvert-Lewin injured and Cenk Tosun on the bench. Brazilian midfielder Richarlison is also a substitute following a late fitness test.

The Toffees make five changes in total from the XI that started in the 2-1 FA Cup win over Rotherham.

Keeper Jordan Pickford, Mason Holgate, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Yerry Mina return.

Chris Wilder makes another change and it could be a canny one. On comes skipper Billy Sharp for Ollie Burke.

Patient Blades possession is the theme of the hour now. But they really will be kicking themselves if they don't find a win tonight now.

If you're just joining us Newcastle are down to 10 men.

    Sheffield United 0-0 Newcastle

John Lundstram has come to the right in a sort of 4-3-3 I think for the hosts now - not too sure.

It's attack v defence anyway. Newcastle have parked a big fluo yellow bus and are just hoping for Callum Wilson to nick them a goal.

  9. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 50 mins

    Sheffield United 0-0 Newcastle

Proactive management. Chris Wilder has already seen enough and takes off Chris Basham and throws on Rhian Brewster.

  10. GREAT SAVE!published at 50 mins

    Sheffield United 0-0 Newcastle

What a save! Sheffield United had seven men in the box there, you can't knock them for ambition. Wing-back Jayden Bogle has looked likely to score tonight and his shot is charged down by Karl Darlow.

Newcastle are now playing a 4-4-1 so have arguably got more progressive with that sending off. Fabian Schar has moved into midfield.

Had to look it up -

Srnicek, Peacock, Howey, Beresford, Barton, Gillespie, Lee, Watson, Clark, Beardsley, Ginola, Sir Les.

Newcastle have won one Premier League match in which they received a red card in the first half. On 16 December 1995, they defeated Everton 1-0 at home.

This is very much not 1995 though. Bet that was some Newcastle side...

Here come the sides. Steve Bruce may be thankful there are no away fans behind the goal they shall be attacking in the second half...

Richard Lancaster: Where are all the pundits backing Bruce now? Forget the red card this is garbage from Newcastle. No doubt somebody will defend him as usual but this is dreadful.

Mike: For anyone that has a go at Newcastle fans for wanting Bruce out, this is why. This is Bruceball. No tactics, no attacking, no clue. I'm yet to see a good argument for him staying

Freddie: a performance that sums up Newcastle as a club, zero ambition. Will never understand the media criticism of their fans for wanting more than this

Talking of long waits - Sheffield United are playing against 10 men in the Premier League for the first time since 13 May 2007, when Lee McCulloch was sent off for Wigan (their last match of the 2006-07 season).

Sheffield United have gone 55 Premier League matches without an opponent being sent off.

Ant S: The best thing Ashley did for NUFC was hire Rafa. The worst thing he did for #NUFC, external was replace him with Bruce.

Noel Fitzpatrick: Steve Bruce won't change Newcastle's shape much after that red card, they were playing 9-0-1, now they'll be 8-0-1.

Ben Rogers: Huge 45 minutes for Sheffield United coming up - if they want a glimmer of hope of staying up, they need three points against 10 man Newcastle.

The last time Sheffield United reached double figures for attempts on goal in a first half in the Premier League was at Tottenham Hotspur on 9 November 2019 (10).

Much, much better. Still no goals.

    Michael Brown
Former Sheffield United midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

Sheffield United have done so well, they have looked sharp, confident, but it hasn't fallen in front of goal. They have a had real go and, now, a great opportunity for Sheffield United.
