    Belgium 2-1 Wales

Good, high pressing from Wales and Thibaut Courtois rushes his clearance and makes a mess of it, but Daniel James' shot is equally rushed and also off target.

  2. CLOSE!published at 56 mins

    Belgium 2-1 Wales

Good effort from Wales on the break, Daniel James cuts inside and shoots, but it's wide. Should he have passed? Maybe, but you like him showing the confidence to take it on.

    Belgium 2-1 Wales

Wales start the second half as they did the first, looking lively and threatening. Need to create a big chance while they are pinging the ball about so confidently.

I think one of the ways you stop Belgium scoring more goals is showing more belief in possession yourself. Wales showed that in the goal but actually went the other way and started giving the ball away cheaply. The second half they've started better.

You might say I'm a substitution Denayer?

    No?

    Ok, I'll get my coat.

Wales have had more control of the ball in four minutes of the second half than they had for long periods in that first half.

  7. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 20:54 Greenwich Mean Time 24 March 2021

    Belgium 2-1 Wales

As for my 'no changes at half-time', sorry, my bad, as the Americans say.

Thomas Vermaelen is off, Jason Denayer is on. Write your own Hal Robson-Kanu reference, I've missed my moment.

    Nearly for Wales.

Gareth Bale's footwork is phenomenal and he dances through the penalty area like Fred Astaire, but Belgium clear.

However, Daniel James recycles the ball and crosses for Bale who tries an overhead kick, but it's wide.

    Very encouraging.

Harry Wilson seems to be moving freely. Good news. Relieving news.

There have been several slips by players on the slick playing surface, but that didn't stop the groundstaff giving the pitch a good half-time soaking.

As if Wales' spirits haven't been dampened enough by that two-goal Belgium response.

We are back underway in Belgium.

No changes from either side, yet.

And don't listen to Alan Partridge, it was only 77% possession. That's not even as good as Roberto's winning record as Belgium boss.

It was a fabulous goal and start for Wales, unfortunately they've not been able to build on it.

    There we are.

A strange half for Wales, who have both been utterly dominated, but have also scored one of the most spectacular goals you will ever see.

    Belgium deservedly lead at half-time.

Get a brew and see you in a few.

Belgium have shown their quality after going behind, dominating possession. Wales are quite rigid and are finding it difficult to keep the ball, to play passes and get up the field. I'd like to see Wales play with a bit more freedom, maybe Gareth Bale to come central or switch sides.

They'll take heart from the fact Ward hasn't had too much to do, but they need to knock Belgium off their stride in terms of the possession they're getting. I don't think Belgium are the quickest at the back so if the Welsh front three are put in good positions they will cause them problems.
