Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

I loved to see the way that Jesse Lingard approached the game. He did it in the right manner. He was high energy.

You could tell he was desperate for a goal and it followed on with how he has been playing for West Ham and his resurgence since leaving Manchester United on loan.

More from Gareth Southgate speaking to ITV on Ollie Watkins: "The first thing you saw was the reaction from the rest of the team. That shows you how together they are. They know what it means for him. He's settled in really quickly with the group.

"He's a really humble boy and it was nice to be able to give him half an hour or so. For him to get a goal is fairytale isn't it?"

On Jude Bellingham on whether he's going to be a part of the Euros squad: "He's a player we think is going to be an England international in the future.

"We feel that in that area of the pitch, although we were very happy with everybody tonight, we are a little bit short in numbers.

"For us to help develop him, to put him into games and to try and get him with the team, with the development he is getting at Dortmund as well, we're hoping we can play a part in fast-tracking him into the group."

  5. 'A massive honour for me'published at 22:00 Greenwich Mean Time 25 March 2021

    FT: England 5-0 San Marino

    BBC Radio 5 Live

England midfielder James Ward-Prowse speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "It was a huge night and one that you dream of as a boy growing up. You want to play for England and score at Wembley and to fulfil that is a massive honour and a great achievement. It has left me wanting more and wanting to chase more success.

"I would not have said [I'd have scored with my] left foot. I wanted to try and get in the box and try to be a threat because I knew that was a responsibility of mine tonight. To do that and get a goal has made me very happy.

"These games can be difficult. You have to approach them with the right mentality. They make it difficult and defend for their lives. We had to move the ball quick and do everything right and I think we did."

Great goals from McGinn and Watkins tonight...time to grab a few more for Villa!

    Luke, England

Watkins is going places - knows where the goal is, two footed and puts a shift in.

    Dave, Maidenhead

Jamie Richardson - aren't we better preparing for future games than trying to win 7-0 instead of 5-0. Tonight isn't the prize...

    England

England boss Gareth Southgate speaking to ITV: "We did it as well as we could. I was really pleased with the way we pressed when we lost the ball. That highlighted the mentality of the team for the full 90 minutes. Of course, it's an opponent we should beat, but I thought they went about the job really well.

"There were lots of good individual performances. It would be difficult to pick one out. The midfield players moved the ball around really well. Kalvin Phillips, I was really pleased for him. He's used the ball well and his athleticism around the pitch was good.

"Mason Mount in the first half was excellent and set the tone. It was good to see Jesse Lingard looking like he's enjoying his football again. There were a lot of good things."

Ollie Watkins, who scored on his England debut, speaking to ITV: "Unbelievable, what I have dreamt about. All day in the hotel I was just thinking that I hope to get a chance to come on, enjoy it and get the opportunity to score. I'm speechless to be honest.

"It's been a good journey. I just feel honoured that I can come out here and play for my country with these players and score on my debut. Over the moon.

"I just wanted to get on pitch for a start. I have and can't believe it.

"I'm going to take each game as it comes, focus on my club form, play consistently for Aston Villa, score for them, help the team push up the table and hopefully get into Europe and take it from there."

Ollie Watkins has made a huge step in such a short period of time. The look on his face said it all - the smile, the joy. He has scored a goal at Wembley for England. What a journey he has been on.

He has had a good season for Aston Villa and I am really pleased for him.

  13. World Cup qualifying round-uppublished at 21:46 Greenwich Mean Time 25 March 2021

Sounds like the real action in World Cup qualifying this evening was in Hungary, where Robert Lewandowski has snatched a 3-3 draw for Poland with a late goal. There was also enough time left for Attila Fiola to get a second yellow and red card for the home side before full-time.

Germany settled for three goals in the end against Iceland, but it was frustrating one for Spain, who were held at home by Greece.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic marked his return to international football with an assist for Viktor Claesson to score the only goal as Sweden beat Georgia.

That performance can't do him any harm and he pulled off some really good saves. He stopped England from scoring a barrel-load of goals.

  20. World Cup qualifying latestpublished at 21:35 Greenwich Mean Time 25 March 2021

Germany were pretty much home and dry with seven minutes on the clock, courtesy of those two early goals against Iceland. They are easing to a 3-0 win.

Spain are facing a frustrating draw at home to Greece in their campaign opener. Not sure many would have predicted that.

Sweden are still leading 1-0 at home to Georgia, while Hungary have the edge in a five-goal thriller with Poland.
