It's gone very flat - I'm surprised Gareth Southgate hasn't started to change things. It's definitely gone flat and needs an injection of life. They seemed to be going through, 1-0 up, cruising, in control and after this goal you'd expect more of a reaction from England.

There really is no excuse for Stones. He has more than enough time to deal with the situation when Pope passes the ball to him. He dwelt on it and dwelt on it and then fluffed at the crucial moment.

It has whipped the rug from beneath England.

  3. Gundogan levels for Germanypublished at 21:07 British Summer Time 31 March 2021

    Germany 1-1 North Macedonia

    Germany

Germany are back level as Leroy Sane is brought down inside the box and Ilkay Gundogan steps up to fire home the penalty.

North Macedonia certainly gave the 2014 World Cup winners a scare but they appear to be back on track now.

Ben: When will the England team learn to clear a ball?!?!?! If we do this in the Euros, forget our chances of winning.

Theo: Architects of their own downfall... sometimes you’ve just got to lump it

We're going to learn a bit about this young England side now. They've had it pretty easy in qualifying so far. Now they have to overcome an actual obstacle.

John Stones has been so good this season for Man City. That was a very stark reminder as to why he was out of the City side for such long periods.

  7. Poland fancy their chancespublished at 21:03 British Summer Time 31 March 2021

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at Wembley

Poland are vastly improved in this half but what a sloppy goal for England to concede - with echoes of previous errors there by John Stones.

    Really poor mistake.

You can hear how confident the Polish players suddenly feel. Very vocal.

  8. 'Stones dawdling'published at 21:03 British Summer Time 31 March 2021

    England 1-1 Poland

    Chris Waddle
Ex-Newcastle and England winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

That was John Stones' fault - we've seen it before in an England shirt but not seen it since he got back to top form at Man City but he always had that in his locker.

He has time on the ball, he turns, he has one touch two touch, takes his eye off it - give Poland credit they're chasing the game and trying to get back into it. But Stones dawdling on the ball, takes his eye off it and gets punished. That is a bad mistake from Stones.

GOAL - England 1-1 Polandpublished at 21:01 British Summer Time 31 March 2021

    Jakub Moder

    Disaster.

John Stones has had a shocker, giving the ball away with a dire touch to allow Milik to set up Brighton's Jakub Moder for a lashed finish past Pope.

Poland have not threatened at all until this moment. Handed to them on a plate by one of the Premier League's best defenders this season.

    England 1-0 Poland

John Stones gives Nick Pope a proper hospital pass, tapping the ball back to him with a Poland player charging in. The Burnley keeper does enough to prevent further problems, holding the man off before getting a foul.

He lets out a puff of relieved air. Cheers for that, John.

    England 1-0 Poland

Poland are getting in decent positions down the wings but so far the crosses they have produced have been poor. Pope claims one and then the England defence does it's job with another.

  12. Sensi puts Italy aheadpublished at 20:54 British Summer Time 31 March 2021

    Lithuania 0-1 Italy

    Italy

Two minutes into the second half and Italy take the lead against Lithuania.

Stefano Sensi is the man to break the deadlock with a fine finish from just inside the box.

It is the least Italy deserved after peppering the Lithuania goal with shots - 16 they've had so far.

Was Phil Foden going for goal? If not, it is a dreadful cross that flies harmlessly out for a goal-kick.

Mason Mount likes to play this left hand side, he seems to drift out and if you look at him now he's very close to Raheem Sterling and Ben Chilwell - he definitely likes that left hand side.

  17. YELLOW CARDpublished at 20:49 British Summer Time 31 March 2021

That didn't take long. Milik has been on the pitch less than a minute and becomes the recipient of the first yellow card for a foul on Kane.

Right then, let's get this thing put to bed. Another 45 minutes coming your way.

    Game on.

  19. Pandev stuns Germanypublished at 20:47 British Summer Time 31 March 2021

    Germany 0-1 North Macedonia

    Germany

Well then, how about this for a surprise scoreline - North Macedonia are 1-0 up against Germany.

The visitors took a surprise lead right on the stroke of half time when 37-year-old Goran Pandev struck.

Germany had won their last 18 home qualifiers but are losing at the moment.

    HT: England 1-0 Poland

    Chris Waddle
Ex-Newcastle and England winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

Poland know England are a better team. They have worked hard but offered very little up front. Raheem Sterling has had most of the chances created but he has been very wasteful with it. He got the penalty but it was a silly one to give away. If England get the second goal, it could be as many as you want.
