Ashley Burton: I'm hoping this cup tie will be better than the league game last week.

Matt Dawson: Hoping for another brilliant performance from Luke Shaw today, has to be the most in form player at United atm. Just fantastic.

  4. Liverpool in crisis? Really?published at 16:57 Greenwich Mean Time 24 January 2021

    Man Utd v Liverpool (17:00GMT)

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport at Old Trafford

There has been a lot of comment about Liverpool since their Premier League defeat by Burnley on Thursday, with former player Jamie Carragher saying Jurgen Klopp's men need to be more concerned about their top four place than the title at present.

Personally, I refuse to believe a team that barely dropped a point before lockdown in March and had reached two Champions League finals in a row and was top of the table themselves only a couple of weeks ago is suddenly a busted flush.

Clearly they have injury issues and evidently, their recent form has not been good. But if Manchester United fans are expecting this to be an easy win, I advise them to think again.

I am pretty sure Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is expecting a very tough game.

Strong attacking lineup from Ole today. Could be the second time this week the floodgates open in Manchester.

Liverpool have only reached the FA Cup fifth round in one of manager Jurgen Klopp’s five previous seasons at the club, doing so last term before being eliminated by Chelsea.

Quite a surprising stat for a side that has enjoyed such success of late.

I suppose you have to make compromises somewhere.

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on BBC One: "It is one of the most iconic FA Cup matches you could ask for. If you could go through it might give you momentum and belief like it did in 1999.

"You can't wait for a trophy, you have to go and get it."

Liverpool have been eliminated from the FA Cup by Manchester United more than they have any other opponent in the competition’s history (9, including final defeats).

United are also unbeaten in their last seven home games against Liverpool in all competitions (W3 D4) since a 0-3 loss in March 2014. They last had a longer unbeaten run against Liverpool at Old Trafford between 1990-2000 (12 games).

Liverpool have been magnificent for the last couple of years, a joy to watch, but the blip - it comes down to the squad. They didn't replace Lovren, there's the susceptibility to injury of Matip and Gomes, and they are missing Van Dijk with what he does defensively, his leadership and his build up play.

Man Utd v Liverpool (17:00 GMT)

It would be fair to say that Liverpool really need a win. And we haven't said that very often in the last few seasons.

Jurgen Klopp's side have won once since their 7-0 win at Crystal Palace in December, and that was the 4-1 victory over Aston Villa's kids that set up this tie.

Earlier this week, they got done 1-0 at home by Burnley, having drawn the game before against the side that currently lead the league and face them this afternoon.

It's been such a strange season, two months ago United were struggling for form and people were calling for the manager's head - now look where they are. But it should still be a fascinating game.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp talking to BBC One: "We want to win a football game against a really strong team in a compeition we haven't even been close to the final.

"We can't win a game against Manchester United if we don't start scoring goals."

    Fulham

Fulham manager Scott Parker: "We didn't deserve a result today. It was a tough game and we couldn't match what we had to face today, we couldn't deal with them.

"I had to make changes because of the squad, we've got big games coming up so I don't regret that. That's the way it is.

"The focus is clear, I wanted to win today but now it turns on the league. We'll brush this one away and move on."

Burnley boss Sean Dyche: "There were so many good performances from players who haven't played too much. I know they are good players but they remind you with displays like that.

"I'm shocked we got a penalty, I can't believe it! We average one every 24 games normally and that's two in a few days!

"We take each game as it comes, there are no guarantees. If we keep going as we have been lately who knows how far we can go. When everyone is fit I believe in all of them."

Lingard and Alli need to move on from their respective clubs. They either don't feature at all (Lingard again today) or are only entrusted against lower leagues (Alli v Marine) It wasn't that long ago both were regularly picked for the national team. It's said class is permanent, they need to play for managers who believe in them and get them both back to where they were.

Neither Jesse Lingard nor Amad Diallo are on the bench for Manchester United.

Diallo has been training at Carrington since his £19m arrival from Serie A side Atalanta but the 18-year-old Ivory Coast wide-man is not quite up to a game of this magnitude just yet.

Lingard has been linked with a loan move this month as he tries to get his career back on track.

Manchester United make five changes from the side that beat Fulham earlier this week. Bruno Fernandes drops to the bench, with Donny van de Beek coming in. Scott McTominay also starts in midfield, in place of Fred.

Marcus Rashford returns, replacing Anthony Martial, while Victor Lindelof takes Eric Bailly's place in defence. Dean Henderson is the goalkeeper.

Five changes also for Liverpool, who bring Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino back into the starting XI after they sat out the 1-0 home loss to Burnley. Divock Origi and Sadio Mane drop out.

In midfield, Curtis Jones and James Milner start, in place of Xherdan Shaqiri and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. In defence, Joel Matip is replaced by Rhys Williams.

    Cheers Tom.

Yep, if the draw for the fourth round produced a plum tie then surely Manchester United v Liverpool is it?

Saying that, they didn't exactly treat us to a festival of football the last time they met a week or so back. This is the chance to make amends.
