This is what the Newcastle supporters are wanting to see. They have been aggressive, determined and have brought intensity right from the off.

They have played higher up the pitch like Steve Bruce has wanted them to and it has been a good performance so far.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin latches onto a long ball which Jamaal Lascelles doesn't deal with.

He backheel flicks it to James Rodriguez but Karl Darlow makes the block from a tight angle.

Everton come back again on the right and Abdoulaye Doucoure tees up Richarlison on the edge of the box. He slices it just wide of the right post.

Jonjo Shelvey takes it but it flies over. Too much on it.

Gylfi Sigurdsson gets a yellow for it too. Jonjo Shelvey and Miguel Almiron are eyeing up the free-kick.

Good pressure from Callum Wilson to rob it off Gylfi Sigurdsson but Everton manage to retain possession.

Lucas Digne's cross is dealt with comfortably and Ryan Fraser combines with Jamal Lewis as Newcastle break on the left.

Wilson then turns Sigurdsson on the edge of the box and wins a free-kick.

Text-book header by Callum Wilson and a fine save by Jordan Pickford. Steve Bruce cannot quite believe that didn't go in.

Matt Andrews: Mina is a man mountain. A slight brush on the side of his cheek and he needs an ice pack and rolling around in agony. Pathetic.

Robert Enright: Not sure if Mina got tapped by Callum Wilson or took a left hook off Anthony Joshua there. Bit of an overreaction?

Ryan Fraser whips a corner in from the right. Callum Wilson beats Richarlison to it at the near post and thumps a header towards goal.

It's fingertips from Jordan Pickford, who pulls off a brilliant save to stop it creeping under the crossbar.

Ian, Newcastle: Never mind the Bruce way. We would probably be better if he just told them to go out, play wherever you want, just play.

Andrew Neil: Bruce in a lose lose situation here really as if NUFC win it will be credited to Jones new influence. If they don't it'll be put at Steve's door

Yerry Mina goes down following a challenge with Callum Wilson and he's holding his face. A quick VAR check concludes nothing but Mina is getting some treatment (magic spray).

Miguel Almiron lays it off to Jonjo Shelvey on the edge of the box. He sets himself to shoot and it takes a deflection off Yerry Mina before rolling dangerously wide of the left post.

Newcastle's new assistant Graeme Jones is taking an active role on the touchline. He's been in constant dialogue with fellow assistant Steve Agnew, and just bellowed praise out to Javier Manquillo on the opposite touchline before offering a thumbs up.

On further inspection, it looks like Newcastle are playing a diamond midfield with Miguel Almiron at the top, and Callum Wilson and Ryan Fraser further ahead.

Alex Iwobi skips past Jamal Lewis on the right but Jamaal Lascelles beats Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the air when the cross comes in.

Richarlison then picks it up in the middle, cuts inside and forces a low save from Karl Darlow with a decent strike. Comfortable for the keeper though.

Jonjo Shelvey catches James Rodriguez again. That's another yellow. No surprise as Shelvey has already made several fouls on Rodriguez.

Just needs to be careful...

Isaac Hayden's shot from long range is closed down by Gylfi Sigurdsson and Everton try to break.

The long ball races away from Dominic Calvert-Lewin though, and it rolls through to Karl Darlow.

Kev, Cheltenham: Lascelles treading on thin ice for the next 86mins, not what Newcastle need right now.

Shaun, Newcastle: Nick Pope should be Englands number 1 on form, and Darlow absolutely deserves a squad slot.

Richard, Brentford: I am utterly underwhelmed by any NUFC game currently. There's just nowt to be excited about. It's like a chore watching them.

James Rodriguez picks out Richarlison with a lovely pass in the middle. It comes to Lucas Digne but his cross is a poor one. Karl Darlow gathers it in.

Newcastle then set Callum Wilson on his way on the right. Eventually, Ryan Fraser wins a corner off Yerry Mina on the opposite side.

Alex Iwobi gets to the byline on the right and squeezes a cross in. Richarlison tries to keep it in on the far side but he's offside anyway.
