    Southampton 0-1 Aston Villa

    Southampton

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl, speaking to BBC MOTD: "It’s not nice to lose like this. But you know football is not always fair. Today we did not deserve to lose.

"They told me the penalty decision in the first half was a goal if it did not hit the hand. These moments can be decisive if you go 1-0 up.

"We created more chances. Twenty shots on goal is not bad in 90 minutes.

"We are missing the clinical edge and maybe at the end a bit of luck. Was Ings offside? Maybe a little bit on, a little bit off. At the moment that [sums up] us right now.

"We had a time in the season where we scored easily. Now there’s always a block or a goalkeeper makes a great save.

"At the moment there are injuries too. We have to find a way out of this."

[On James Ward-Prowse starting at right-back]: "If I could clone James Ward-Prowse I would do it. He is such a good player. But with injuries we cannot have the perfect formation. But this is football, we are not the only team with injuries.

"Today we invested everything, but we didn’t have the luck to score. We must do better."

Ironic that Villa go above Arsenal with that. I said at the time Martinez was a great addition - one of the season's best purchases, or worst sales, depending how you look at it.

  9. 'It is tough for us to win games at the moment'published at 22:23 Greenwich Mean Time 30 January 2021

    Southampton 0-1 Aston Villa

    Southampton

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl, speaking to Sky Sports: "I saw an interesting game. I don't know if we deserved to lose today. They had one big chance, they score that. We had more I think, especially in the second half. We played some good stuff. At the moment a little bit hard to take, also the decisions. They have told me it is a clear handball. He blocks a shot. The offside goal for Ingsy. If it is offside it is offside but in that moment football is not always fair.

"So many people are discussing handball in the box and I don't want to step in this queue. It is not on me today, let them try to do and let us do our job.

"We had a lot of possession in the first half but it is always important where you have the possession. We are struggling at the moment with injuries and also scoring goals. At the moment it is tough for us to win games but we have to continue in our belief and step up again.

"We have a lot of chances and that is the reason why I am not worried about our game at the moment but the final ball doesn't want to go in. I think the precision of the final shot is not a perfect one and this we can do better. We can score goals, we know this, we have to work hard and it will come back."

Talk of 'unfair' VAR decisions merely disguises Southampton's myriad problems and plays into the overblown myth that is Ralph Hasenhuttl. Ultimately the guy is miles out of his depth and needs to go

    Anon

I'm a villa fan. That was not offside. They need to introduce a rule that favours the attacker to encourage attacking play. Ings goal should have stood.

    Chris H

Patt, that wasn't the tightest VAR pen call. Watkins vs West Ham was the tightest. Better team won today.

  13. 'Hopefully VAR decision will go our way soon'published at 22:18 Greenwich Mean Time 30 January 2021

    Southampton 0-1 Aston Villa

Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse, speaking to Sky Sports: "We knew this would be a good chance to get three points. They had one chance and one good goal and that has cost us in the end.

"We have not had time to look at them back but VAR is there for a reason and gives the correct answer but we can't focus on that. They had one chance and scored one good goal. We could have had a lot more in the game.

"It is one of those things, hopefully we will get one go our way soon.

"They have good quality, especially in forward areas and they can punish you and they did.

"Momentum is key but every team goes through that difficult spell during a season. It is important not to get disheartened by it. Hopefully the goals will come and we will get back up the table."

Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez told BBC MOTD: "We were so frustrated after the Burnley game. We had so many chances to kill the game and then we conceded three goals from nowhere.

"But we have a really good team spirit. The 10 guys in front of me did a massive job today.

"We knew how tough [Southampton] were going to be. [Tonight was] a really good performance.

"I came here with massive ambitions. I always say we are not here to stay in the division, we have the quality to go to Europe. I want [to finish in the] top six, we have a great team and a great manager.

"We’ve got a really good team. I’m really happy to be here. [It's] West Ham next, we want back-to-back wins."

  17. 'A fantastic goal'published at 22:11 Greenwich Mean Time 30 January 2021

    Southampton 0-1 Aston Villa

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa boss Dean Smith, speaking to BBC Sport: "We didn't change the team from the other night against Burnley. I thought the lads had played well enough to keep the shirt and they put some effort into today's performance.

"We are on the positive side of some tight decisions this time which is pleasing and it was a quality goal.

"We'd done enough to win that game and we came here to be hard to beat. Some resolute defending at times. A fantastic goal to see."

  19. 'I have no complaints with VAR today'published at 22:10 Greenwich Mean Time 30 January 2021

    Southampton 0-1 Aston Villa

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa boss Dean Smith told Sky Sports: "It was a tough performance against a tough team. But what a lovely goal. Great ball from Jack [Grealish] and great header from Ross [Barkley].

"Then we had to be resolute. We got some great blocks at the end there. And some VAR decisions [went our way].

"We’ve not had too many of them, it feels good. The offside [VAR decisions] I have no complaints with. There’s a line there, it’s what it is.

"As for the handball, I’ve not seen it back but Matt Cash said it came off his thigh.

"The first 20 minutes we had a problem. They played through us too easily. We changed things and made it difficult. We’ve had a good game today.

"I think that’s nine or 10 clean sheets this season and that’s brilliant. It gives you a platform and our attackers have the quality [to win games].

On goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez: "He’s a very good goalkeeper, that’s why we brought him in. He was also the first one in the dressing room thanking the lads for the blocks as well."
