A thoroughly enjoyable match this evening that just reminds you how much quality the Championship can produce.

We'll be back with more live action from the division on Friday evening when Blackburn host Preston is a tasty Lancashire derby.

Until then - thanks for being with us.

And if you missed any of the action, my BBC Sport colleague James Law has been putting it all down in writing for you to read and enjoy.

His match report of a huge win at the Madejski Stadium for the Bees is below.

Reading meanwhile drop a place to fifth with that defeat as their goal difference becomes inferior to Watford's.

As I said, on another night, it could've have been very different for Veljko Paunovic's side.

They will go again on Saturday against Millwall.

    Reading 1-3 Brentford

    All over.

Brentford left it late, but they take all three points to go top, two clear of Norwich and extend their unbeaten run to 21 league games.

Reading beaten for the first time in eight and they can feel a bit unlucky on an evening where they gave it their all.

    Reading 1-3 Brentford

Michael Olise lines up a direct free-kick for Reading but it deflects off the top of the wall, Ivan Toney's head in fact, for a corner.

Foul in the box from Andy Yiadom and the chance goes begging.

    Four minutes being added on.

Meanwhile, Brentford make a double change.

Mathias Jensen hobbles off for Marcus Forss and Josh Dasilva makes way for Jan Zamburek.

    Game over!

It's a sucker punch for Reading who were pressing hard for a leveller.

Sergi Canos takes aim from outside the box with an effort on his right.

Rafael gets down well to parry, but it falls right into the path of who else, but Ivan Toney.

He tucks it home on the rebound for his 23rd league goal of the season and the points are well and truly Brentford's.

What a move. What a goal.

Brentford are heading two points clear at the top as it stands and two-goal Josh Dasilva is sending them there.

Reading have pushed so well, but Brentford's prolonged spell of pressure finally pays off.

A long searching ball in from the left from Mathias Jensen reaches Ivan Toney at the back post, he chests it down and Dasilva latches on to it at pace to fire it into the roof of the net.

    Unstoppable.

    Reading 1-1 Brentford

Reading just taking the sting out of Brentford's advances in these closing stages.

But decent spell of possession for the hosts fails to get in behind the Bees despite Michael Olise showing some class down the right wing.

    Second Brentford change.

Tarique Fosu is replaced by Saman Ghoddos.

Into the last 10 minutes, who's going to come out on top in this one?

    Close for Brentford!

Josh Dasilva again the orchestrator of a great chance for them down the right.

He strips past the left-back, gets to the byline, sends the ball across the face and it almost finds Ivan Toney.

But a great last-ditch challenge from Michael Morrison blocks it off.

    Reading make a first change.

Sone Aluko comes on in place of Alfa Semedo.

    Reading 1-1 Brentford

A Brentford corner finally finds a team-mate but Rico Henry can't quite direct it back across the area towards another dark shirt.

Frustrating lack of quality in that area in this match so far.

Omar Richards the first player in Tony Harrington's book this evening.

He brings down Henrik Dalsgaard as Brentford try and force a break down the right.

    Reading 1-1 Brentford

Rico Henry goes surging into the Reading half even after Josh Dasilva is knocked to the ground after a tussle earlier in the move.

Mads Sorensen launches a long throw into the Reading box from the left but it won't drop for a player in a charcoal shirt for the visitors to capitalise.

    Into the last 20 minutes.

This half while short on chances, has certainly flown by so far such is the intensity that both sides are playing at.

  18. Postpublished at 69 mins

    Reading 1-1 Brentford

Tempo has certainly been ratcheted up a couple of notches by Brentford since Sergi Canos came on.

Reading just having to be aware of the threat they can pose.

As they try to relieve some of that pressure, Omar Richards fails to make the most of a crossing opportunity wide out left as the ball sails through from one touchline to the other.

  19. Postpublished at 66 mins

    Reading 1-1 Brentford

Sergi Canos almost set up a chance for Josh Dasilva with his first touch.

Michael Morrison gets across in his penalty area just in time to dispossess the earlier goalscorer as he waits for the ball to it down.

Time for a first change of the evening.

Brentford take off Bryan Mbeumo and bring on Sergi Canos.

He scored an absolute belter off the bench for Brentford in this fixture a few seasons ago.

    An omen perhaps?
