  4. 'Fernandes showed what a stellar signing can do'published at 15:08 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2021

    Barney Chilton, Rednews podcast

    Manchester United

As I walked away from the unravelling defeat at home to Spurs (sofa to fridge, that is, sadly), not in my wildest dreams could I have envisioned United would be where they are right now, so, there isn’t a knee-jerk reaction from results to need to desperately bring names in this window to help salvage a season.

But Bruno Fernandes showed what a stellar signing can do for a team, and I’d like to think that is acknowledged by the suits at United for the summer and the further strengthening that is still needed as Ole continues to move on those not needed.

I still think, as I did as the last window closed, that United need a centre-back, a right sided attacker and a 25 year old clinical Edinson Cavani, but that’s for another day - on a quiet deadline day all United fans are really hoping for is we can keep in form and maintain our position near the top of the table.

Tell that to a Manchester United fan!

Oh, we have one coming up here. How convenient? Not scripted in the slightest.

    A transfer involving Manchester City...

Birmingham City have signed 19-year-old striker Keyendrah Simmonds from the Premier League side on a two-and-a-half-year contract.

Aitor Karanka's Blues are 20th in the Championship, four points from safety.

    Still time for Oxford, Emlyn.

    Southampton

I think the key focus for Saints on deadline day has to be trying to get some cover in at full-back.

While Ryan Bertrand and Kyle Walker-Peters are excellent first-choice selections, we look incredibly vulnerable in that area of the pitch when one/both are unavailable.

Ultimately, given the limited transfer funds we have available, plus the fact it will likely mean having to accept a ‘back-up’ role in the squad, securing the quality of player we need might go right down to the wire.

Manchester City are close to agreeing a deal with Rochdale for 18-year-old forward Kwadwo Baah.

The Germany-born player is likely to stay at the Crown Oil Arena for the remainder of the campaign before moving to City on a permanent basis.

It is the second successive year Rochdale have cashed in on a youngster during the January transfer window.

Last year they sold Luke Matheson to Wolves for £1m.

Meanwhile, City’s England Under-20 international defender Taylor Harwood-Bellis is set to join Blackburn on loan.

Harwood-Bellis signed a new contract in December but manager Pep Guardiola wants him to get some first-team experience.

  13. All quiet at Evertonpublished at 14:49 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2021

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Waiting on confirmation of two loan outgoings at Everton, namely Jonjoe Kenny completing his move to Celtic and Cenk Tosun returning to Turkey with his former club Besiktas.

It's all gone quiet, so far today at least, on Brazil forward Bernard's proposed move to Al-Nasr in the UAE.

Bernard looked on the way out of Goodison Park when, along with Tosun, he was not even named on the substitutes' bench for the home defeat to Newcastle United.

If Bernard does not move, will that impact on any plans Everton have to bring in another forward?

With Moise Kean on loan at Paris St. Germain and now Tosun off to Besiktas, it leaves manager Carlo Ancelotti very light in that area and increases the workload on Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison, who is having a very indifferent season.

If Bernard goes, it may spark something into life with an incoming.

Hibernian midfielder Stevie Mallan, 24, has joined Turkish Super Lig club Yeni Malatyaspor on loan until the summer.

I googled Malatyaspor's squad to see if there were any familiar names there. Nope.

They do have a player called Teenage Hadebe though. He's 25.

It doesn't look like there'll be any incomings at Wolves today but there has been an outgoing.

Portuguese centre-back Roderick Miranda has been released after three and a half years at the club.

He played 17 times for Wolves in their promotion season in 2017-18 in the Championship but has not played since.

He has had spells on loan at Greek side Olympiakos and Famalicao in his native Portugal.
