Can't help think we'll go 1-0 up in the first 15, sit back with 25% possession and Mourinho call it a great performance!

Gareth Bale is 31 and hasn't really been playing at the highest level for 2-3 years at least. At Madrid he showed a lack of dedication, application and desire. Who expected him to be Premiership quality?

Tottenham Hotspur 0-0 West Bromwich Albion

Decent again from West Brom down their left, but new man Mbaye Diagne can't steer a header on target. He's looked useful when I've seen him so far.

Harry Kane then spins a pass from deep in the centre-circle to free Son down the left, he cuts inside and shoots but it's an easy catch.

Lucas Moura threatens to burst past the Albion defence with a strong run but Kyle Bartley slides in to make the clearance, before Erik Lamela sees a cross well claimed by Sam Johnstone.

Lovely ball out wide from Romaine Sawyers frees up left-back Conor Townsend, and his cross is a testing one.

It's just beyond Ainsley Maitland-Niles though. West Brom's best moment yet.

Harry Kane has already made two great balls from the 10 position into runners ahead of him.

It goes without saying that they are a much better side with their best player.

Spurs were heavily criticised for their approach against Chelsea and they've started at a high tempo here. West Brom happy to drop off and put nine behind the ball though. Could be a tough nut to crack.

    Mark Lawrenson
    BBC football expert

The only good news for Tottenham after they suffered their third successive league defeat against Chelsea on Thursday is that it appears Harry Kane will be back from injury sooner than expected.

Even without him up front, they should still be too strong for West Brom though.

The Baggies have picked up only one point from their past four games and are 10 points from safety, which is a heck of a lot of ground to make up. It is very difficult to see how they can turn things around and get out of this situation.

I know West Brom boss Sam Allardyce is still drumming into his side what he wants them to do, and I am sure their results will improve - I just can't see them going on a run good enough to get them out of the bottom three.

    Prediction: 2-0

  14. Kane 'a fundamental player' - Mourinhopublished at 11:52 Greenwich Mean Time 7 February 2021

Tottenham Hotspur v West Bromwich Albion (12:00 GMT)

    Tottenham Hotspur

Spurs boss Jose Mourinho tells BT Sport:

"We hope we can win the match and finish that negative cycle of results - it's as simple as that.

"In this moment myself and my players are positive, of course we couldn’t work much on the pitch because we played two days ago.

"But I believe the boys are in the right frame of mind to face such a difficulty and important match."

On Harry Kane's return, he added: "We had immediately good news after the injury knowing it was not as difficult as we initially feared but he recovered very, very well.

"He’s confident and feels absolutely fine and, of course, he is a fundamental player for us."

  17. Pereira benching 'tactical' - Allardycepublished at 11:49 Greenwich Mean Time 7 February 2021

Tottenham Hotspur v West Bromwich Albion (12:00 GMT)

    West Bromwich Albion

Baggies boss Sam Allardyce tells BT Sport:

"Every game is massive, the disappointing thing about the past two is that we were in position to gather at least four points but ended up with only one.

"Unfortunately, focus at the right times in the right areas has let us down and we conceded goals that could be avoided.

"We need to tidy up our defensive side because Son and Harry Kane can cause anybody lots of problems."

On leaving Matheus Pereira, who has scored five in Albion's past six games, on the bench: "It's purely tactical in terms of what we want to try to do – this is one of systems we haven’t played yet.

"It’s very unfortunate for Matheus because when he has been in possession he's been really good but when I look at the other end and the goals that are going in we have to try to stop that."

Mourinho is past it. Forget the ‘serial winner’ nonsense. His methods and tactics are outdated and so, so dull. I’m sure I’m not alone in having that perverse feeling that I don’t care if we lose today.

    Jim, Exeter

I think bringing Kane back for today's game is a sign of desperation on Mourinho's part. He clearly doesn't have confidence that he can get a result without him.
