  1. 'A really poor miss'published at 16:12 Greenwich Mean Time 27 February 2021

    West Brom 1-0 Brighton

Brighton are starting the second half how they finished the first - attacking, getting in spaces. Connolly has to score. It's comfortably over the crossbar, a really poor miss.

    West Brom 1-0 Brighton

    MASSIVE chance for Brighton!

Neal Maupay glides into the box and forces Sam Johnstone to parry his shot into the path of Aaron Connolly who cannot find the target from close range.

That could be a big moment in this match.

Daniel Woodley: Our European friends may envy the standard of play in the Premier League but they certainly laugh at us when it comes to officiating. The Premier League need to act. And fast

That situation is easily rectified by immediately admitting his mistake after the initial incident, apologising, pulling it back for the free kick and telling them to get on with it. That sounds too much like common sense though

There's a nice flow about West Brom at the start of the new half.

They're putting together some decent moves and Ainsley Maitland-Niles has had the ball pinched off his toe just as he was about to shoot.

  5. 'We have to be able to listen to decisions'published at 16:07 Greenwich Mean Time 27 February 2021

    West Brom 1-0 Brighton

    Leon Osman
Former Everton midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

His decision to blow the whistle and then re-blow it. It's a complete mess.

When you get a set-piece on the edge of the penalty area, quite often I would be the man to stand in front of the ball so the other team could not take a quick free-kick, the referee would ask me to move back and I would say as long as they won't be able to take the free-kick until we are set. I know how I would've reacted...

We all make mistakes, referees will make mistakes, but it is how you deal with that. We have to be able to listen in.

People messaging in are clearly confused. Was it a mess? Yes. Did Lee Mason get it right? Yes. Were VAR right? Yes. He blew to say ok to take. Noticed WBA weren't ready and blew to stop play, the goal hadn't been scored before the 2nd blow. So, it doesn't stand.

    Anon

No excuse for Mason's horrendous performance today, but the reasons thia country has so few good refs is a) the complete lack of support at grass roots and b) the constant awful abuse from fans, players and managers. Why would anyone become a ref these days?

    HT: West Brom 1-0 Brighton

    Leon Osman
Former Everton midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

It's the best football we have seen from West Brom today.

We have a really good game on our hands, both sides are desperately trying to get the second goal in this game.

You would imagine Graham Potter will use the disallowed goal to motivate his players. Brighton are bound to come out fighting in the second half.

West Brom have now led in four of the past six games but have taken only three points from the previous five.

Sam Hartles: We’re always told to play to the whistle. Lee Mason blew the whistle so Dunk took the shot. How can it then be disallowed?! Why blow the whistle to then blow it again 2 seconds later. What a farce

Jamie Brilley: We need to start hearing the conversations between VAR and the refs. Transparency is needed for the good of the game. There's no trust in referees anymore.

It is pure confusion. Lee Mason himself didn't seem to know what decision he should give. He knew he was at fault in some way. It was a complete mess.

More news on Brighton's disallowed goal. Lee Mason blew his whistle BEFORE the free-kick was taken but then blew a second time BEFORE Lewis Dunk's set-piece crossed the line.

One thing is certain. It's a total mess. An absolute shambles.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles has got to put that away - West Brom were guilty of that last week, not finishing their chances. I think Brighton will come back into this in the second half.

After Ainsley Maitland-Niles is denied by Robert Sanchez, Brighton counter and Aaron Connolly again goes close after pin-ball in the Baggies penalty area.

Decent save by the West Brom keeper.

Not a lot has happened since Brighton had a goal chalked off. You've not heard the last about that. There's going to be a lengthy debate about Lee Mason and VAR after this.

Oh. Deary. Me. Yet another disaster from Lee Mason. The standard of refereeing this year is poor.

    Jim

Refs finding a new and more original way to show how utterly incompetent they are. Completely useless.

    Dan, Edinburgh

How many times do we need to talk about poor refereeing ruining games. Not enough refs in the game. I certainly wouldn't want to start off my journey earning 20-25 quid reffing Sunday league. But this is the root cause. Not enough refs at grassroots level

Graham Potter is standing in his technical area encouraging his players. The Brighton boss must be furious inside. He's not got a reputation for confronting officials but I'll be amazed if words are not exchanged with Lee Mason at half-time.
