Commentators who use the word 'delicious' to describe anything to do with a football match (with perhaps the exception of half time pies) should not be in a job

    Pete

Might struggle to get our HR department to add that to job descriptions, Pete.

    Man City 1-0 West Ham

That Dias goal was his first for Man City on his 32nd appearance in all competitions. What a signing he has been.

Kevin de Bruyne took a free-kick earlier that was terrible, hardly got off the ground and went straight to a West Ham player.

It was notable because it rarely happens.

The cross for Ruben Dias' first Manchester City goal was sensational. In exactly the right spot and just invited the finish.

Randolph has to be on his toes to prevent City having another effort at goal. For a second it looks like Mahrez is away from a long ball forward. But the Hammers keeper is out sharply to smash it away from him and into the stand.

Zero shots in 24 minutes... it only takes one with this City team though!

    Ruben Dias

And that is how quickly it can happen.

De Bruyne swings in an absolute belter of a cross that has the West Ham defence backtracking and Ruben Dias on the move to meet with a powerful header that finds the net past the dive of Randolph.

    One effort, one goal.

Despite over 30% of the match being played in West Ham's third of the pitch, Man city are yet to have a shot at goal

The first yellow card of the day goes to Ben Johnson, who takes out Riyad Mahrez with a late, lunging tackle.

City with a chance to deliver the ball into the box from the right...

De Bruyne delivers, Dawson heads away.

  9. Zinchenko in the Cancelo rolepublished at 12:57 Greenwich Mean Time 27 February 2021

Oleksandr Zinchenko is playing the full-back/midfield role that Joao Cancelo has been so brilliant in recently.

I wonder how much work goes in at training to get that right. The other three defenders have to be switched on to ensure the gaps are covered.

Mind you, I reckon Pep would spot it and tell them.

Joseph: West Ham holding up so well here. Imagine the scenes if Jesse Lingard.. the former united player scores a 93rd minute goal to win it.

John Dunthorne: West Ham look confident and well organised, so rare occurrence of a competitive game for City.

Well, it has been a pretty quiet 25 minutes for Darren Randolph in the West Ham net. The team-mates in front of him are doing a superb job.

Those little passes in the half spaces that City love to play, with De Bruyne looking to pick out a forward or full-back aiming to get in behind the defence are proving tricky. West Ham are so deep, offering so little room between back-line and byline it means every pass has to be absolutely on the money.

So far, they have not been.

    Scramble!

West Ham have a rare attack and it almost brings them the opener. Lingard's shot is deflected and loops to Soucek at the back post. His header back into the mixer is challenged for by Antonio and Ederson, with the latter allowing the ball to slip out for Lingard to fire another shot that is blocked.

    Frantic stuff for a moment.

The 9 players on the City bench could probably form a side of their own and still finish top four.

    John in Eastbourne

You'll never win the league without consistently picking the same back 4. Enter Pep and an unlimited war chest, hard luck on any ff teams that try and predict whats going on in his mind!

As we expected, West Ham are set up well here. They are denying City space, working hard in numbers.

City are regularly meeting eight black-shirted players in close vicinity when they get anywhere near the Hammers box.

Closest we've come to a goal so far.

De Bruyne's superb run to the byline ends with a low ball into the middle that is designed for Torres to fire at goal. He can't get his shot fully away, though, thanks to a superb sliding block from Declan Rice.

Zinchenko is the man playing that Cancelo role - pushing up from full-back to provide an extra build-up man in midfield and beyond. He starts an attack that ends with Mahrez swinging in a cross that is nodded away.

    Slow burner so far.

Aguero's first real involvement sees him picked out in the box after a smart run. He is held up by Dawson, though, and has to check. The attack fizzles out without an effort at goal. Still waiting for our first.

    Forget about winning for now.

Scoring first would be a major achievement for West Ham.

No-one has done that in a Premier League game against Manchester City since their defeat at Tottenham on 21 November.

No-one has done it here since the draw with Liverpool a couple of weeks before that.
