Poland snatch an injury-time equaliser to deprive England of three points in Warsaw and a sixth straight victory in their qualifying campaign for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Gareth Southgate on an alleged incident that occurred before half-time: "We're getting to grips with what that was. There's been a report put in and we need to find out a little bit more about what's happened.

"At the moment we're still gathering all the evidence so there's no point in me speculating any further."

More from Gareth Southgate on BBC Radio 5 Live: "We wanted to make substitutions towards the end, but when the goal went in we thought there was no point because we would be adding time on.

"We were playing well, we were in control. At those moments, it's not easy to come on as a substitute and we would be taking people off for the sake of it, frankly.

"We were in total control, there was no issue, why disrupt it when you're in control?"

England manager Gareth Southgate on BBC Radio 5 Live: "It was no surprise that this was the hardest game in the group. Early in the game, we were a little slow to move the ball and Poland pressed us well.

"We got caught in our own half a few times but we recovered well and defended those situations well. As the half wore on we started to get a grip of the game and gain more control without making really any clear chances - other than Harry Kane's header at the far post.

"In the second half we controlled the game. If there's a criticism it's that we didn't create enough clear chances from that possession and we didn't get enough players in the box.

"While it's one-nil you run the risk of what happened at the end. We're clearly disappointed not to get the three points but I have to look at what the players have done across these three matches.

"Given that there was no way of telling how they would react after what happened in the [Euro 2020 final], I think their mentality and application has been really good."

There was some tired defending at the end. Kyle Walker got beat down the outside, Mason Mount had an opportunity to clear and he didn't.

England were so aggressive off the ball for 85 minutes and then they dropped off in the last five, much like the Euro 2020 final.

• England conceded in the 90th minute of a World Cup qualifier for only the third time ever, also doing so in March 2001 against Albania and June 2017 against Scotland.
• For only the second time in their last 18 major tournament qualifying matches, England have failed to register victory, also failing in October 2019 against the Czech Republic.
• Poland are unbeaten in their last 20 home matches in qualifying for the Euros/World Cup (W16 D4), starting with a 5-0 victory over San Marino back in March 2013.
• England haven’t lost any of their last 18 matches against Poland (W11 D7), a run that stretches back to October 1973.

Harry Kane on his 30-yard strike: "That's probably one of the best goals, probably the furthest out I've scored for England.

"I caught it really nicely, it wobbled in the air and caught the keeper off guard. It was a nice one to get because it's a tough place to play and it broke the deadlock, putting us in a good position. Hopefully I can continue that going into the next camp."

More from Harry Kane on BBC Radio 5 Live: "There was an incident just before half-time which has been reported to the FA guys. They're taking care of it and investigating it and we'll go from there.

"Allegedly it was something that was done, not said. We haven't chance to look at the footage and talk to the lad."

England captain Harry Kane on BBC Radio 5 Live: "A kick in the teeth at the end there, it's never easy conceding in the last minute. It was a good performance from the boys though, we controlled the game well.

"Of course [there was an 'edgy' atmosphere], we're playing for the opportunity to play in the World Cup. Poland clearly saw this as their last opportunity to take some points off us and get closer to us in the group.

"I thought we handled it well. The Hungary game and this game away from home were not easy to play in. The boys stepped up and put in good performances."

Chris: Really surprised the big clubs haven't come in for Phillips, another man of the match performance.

England captain Harry Kane on ITV: "A tough one to take right at the end, I thought we handled the game well, not an easy place to come and we were seeing the game out well. Sometimes the pressure comes away from home but we are top with four games to go.

"Rebounds and second balls fell their way and the guy headed it in. That is football. Two tough away games in this camp but four points clear and we are in a good position."

That was bitty, gritty, I thought England would do enough with that Harry Kane goal. It was a really gritty performance but they've conceded a goal.

The most important thing is that England haven't lost the game. They're still top of the group, the group's in their hands, they've certainly got the games coming up where they will bag the points to go to Qatar.

"A world class goalkeeper would have saved that," says Roy Keane on ITV re. Harry Kane's goal.

It looked like Wojciech Szczesny's feet were stuck in cement, he could barely move to try and stop it.

Gareth Southgate had two substitutes out, Bukayo Saka was one, but he didn't put them on.

In the end, a bit of tiredness from the defenders led to a goal from Poland. England possibly deserved to win the game, but you have to praise Poland's spirit.

The manager too with Poland's substitutions, they put on five, we put on none.

Have to question Gareth Southgate's tactics though, didn't make any changes, England started to tire and dropped deep into their own box before inevitably conceding late on.

England remain top of the group but their lead has been cut to four points by Albania, who move up to second after thrashing San Marino 5-0.

Gareth Southgate's side still in pole position to make it to next year's World Cup.
