  1. 'Not a big issue'published at 19:22 British Summer Time 9 October 2021

    Andorra v England (19:45 BST)

Turf burn alert! This game is being played on an artificial pitch but Gareth Southgate is confident his players will handle it.

"We are used to these type of pitches. Most of our players are young enough that they grew up on them in academies and the older ones have played on far worse artificial pitches when they were younger," said the England boss.

"As a senior player, you wouldn't want 40 games a season on it but for the odd game it is not a big issue for us.

"There are certain technical players who might be better suited to the surface. We have got a very specific challenge to break down a very compact defence who will definitely have nine or 10 players close to their own goal."

Andorra are one of the real minnows of world football. They've won only four competitive matches over the years and this is more than David against Goliath.

Whenever you have an FA Cup tie between a big team and a small team you always think there might be a surprise.

But when it comes to matches like this, there will almost certainly not be because the gulf is just so great.

England have only trailed for eight minutes and 53 seconds across their last 16 international matches, all of which came during the Euro 2020 semi-final against Denmark. They have only fallen behind in two of their last 24 World Cup qualifiers, against Scotland in June 2017 (drew 2-2) and Slovakia in September 2017 (won 2-1).

David Regan: I know it's 'only' Andorra, but how refreshing for England to have a man up front who will actually stay there!! Let's hope that the crosses come flying in now the rest of the team know that there'll be someone in the centre.

It's not only a big night for Kieran Trippier, it's also a momentous occasion for Kateryna Monzul, who becomes the first woman to referee an England men's match.

"For us it is almost irrelevant, the quality of the official is important, not the gender," said Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate.

"We are looking forward to being a part of what is a special occasion."

Fellow Ukrainians Maryna Striletska and Svitlana Grushko are the assistant referees for the game.

The same female trio were in action a week ago for FC Copenhagen's Europa Conference League victory over Lincoln Red Imps.

Born in Kharkiv, Monzul started officiating Ukrainian First League fixtures in 2011 and five years later broke new ground as the first female to referee a game in the Ukrainian Premier League.

  8. 'I'm speechless' - Trippier on captaining Englandpublished at 19:04 British Summer Time 9 October 2021

    Andorra v England (19:45 BST)

Kieran Trippier has come a long way since he played for his school team near Bury.

The Atletico Madrid right-back, who impressed in the run to the 2018 World Cup semi-final, is captaining England for only the second time.

"Hopefully I can follow that up with a win but I'm speechless, really, to captain my country and lead the boys out," he said.

"It's something I'll never ever forget."

Andorra's national stadium is smaller than Bootle's ground in terms of capacity.

It holds just 3,306 fans. Eighth tier Bootle can fit 3,750 into their home.

That said, you don't get a backdrop like this at the Berry Street Garage Stadium.

England are closing in on qualification. It could - depending on other results in the group - actually get sorted this week. It's probably more likely to be confirmed next month. The more difficult of England's two matches in this international break is at home to Hungary on Tuesday.

England are in a STRONG position. They need three wins from their last four games to make absolutely sure of finishing top.

As well as Andorra, they have back-to-back home games against Hungary and Albania before rounding off their qualifying campaign away to San Marino.

Put it this way. If England don't qualify automatically, Gareth Southgate will have some serious questions to answer.

It's the first time England have played a senior match at the Estadi Nacional and at one point yesterday afternoon it looked like it could be in some doubt.

The fire started at the bottom of the television gantry and for a little while it looked like it could be quite serious but they very quickly got it under control.

The ground staff directed some of the sprinklers which are on the pitch towards the fire before the fire brigade turned up and managed to put it out.
