Bulgaria 2-1 Northern Ireland; Republic of Ireland 4-0 Qatar

That's all from us this evening, thanks for joining us!

It was disappointment for Northern Ireland as their World Cup hopes came crashing to an abrupt halt in Bulgaria.

You can read the report from Sofia here and see where it went wrong for Ian Baraclough's men.

Things were a bit more relaxed for the Republic of Ireland with their comfortable win over Qatar in Dublin.

Likewise, you can read about Callum Robinson's hat-trick as he made it five goals in two games. Clinical.

Thanks for following the game live, and we'll be back for the final set of World Cup qualifiers in November.

    Bye for now!

  2. What's next for Northern Ireland?published at 22:28 British Summer Time 12 October 2021

    Bulgaria 2-1 Northern Ireland

Well, after all the optimism from September's matches Northern Ireland's final two qualifiers in November will be dead rubbers.

First up it's Lithuania, where Northern Ireland need to get a result at home to avoid the dreaded wooden spoon and stop the campaign from being a total disaster.

Then there's the small task of European Champions Italy in the final match at Windsor Park.

Northern Ireland haven't won in nine games at home, either. Yikes.

  3. We have to learn from this - Baracloughpublished at 22:16 British Summer Time 12 October 2021

    Bulgaria 2-1 Northern Ireland

    Quote Message

We have to learn from it. We brought new players into the squad and we have to learn from what we have made difficult for ourselves. We have to take that into next month and finish the campaign in a strong and positive way. They are two home games and we have to give our fans something to cheer about as well and look forward to. We have to learn from nights like tonight, because that was in our hands and we set our stall out. We had done ever so well to get ourselves into a 1-0 lead. It should have been more and then you have to see the game out.

  4. We didn't manage the game well - Baracloughpublished at 22:12 British Summer Time 12 October 2021

    Bulgaria 2-1 Northern Ireland

    Quote Message

We created a good few chances in the first-half but didn't take them. They have taken their two half-chances. You talk about a team being clinical - there's an example. We have done ever-so-well to create the chances, shifted the ball wide and got it into wide areas. You have to be ruthless in front of goal and you have to be clinical. You have to win your one-on-one duels, and it started going their way for a 20-minute spell and they scored the goals when they got the upper hand on that. We were untidy with our play, we didn't get our first pass off and we weren't getting the ball into high and wide areas. It got a bit ragged, whether it is a bit of tiredness or fatigue. We didn't manage the game well in that 20 minute spell and it has cost us.

  5. A tale of two CR7spublished at 22:11 British Summer Time 12 October 2021

While Callum Robinson basks in the delight of his first international hat-trick, Cristiano Ronaldo has been busy scoring his 10th.

The Manchester United forward netted another three in Portugal's 5-0 win over Luxembourg this evening.

Looking forward to Robinson v Ronaldo in Dublin next month.

Callum Robinson has been speaking to RTE.

    Quote Message

It's been a crazy week for me but I'm really happy to finish it off with a few goals, a massive win again here. It's nice to win back home. It felt good tonight, all the fans came out and it was a great night. Yeah, they've [my team-mates] been there for me all week, obviously with what went on in the press, that's what we're about - we stick together. I'd be the same if it were one of my team-mates, they were there for me all week. You could see by the way I was playing like nothing was in my head, I just wanted to get the two results and that's what we've done.

    You might need it.

Should Dion Charles be handed more game time?

    Quote Message

I'm sure he's wondering. We don't know how he trained, maybe Ian doesn't see enough in training from him. On the few occasions we have seen him he does look a threat, so for Ian to bring on Jordan Jones in that position, he is a winger, ahead of him - he is a goal scorer so give him that chance. Maybe Ian has a reason for it.

Without stating the obvious, it was a game of two halves. It was so poor. They did the basics better than we did. They were better, there's no question of that. We couldn't recover, either physically or mentally. They were two great goals, but it is so disappointing.

    Quote Message

We got the shock of our lives. They started playing with pace and we didn't react to it. We looked laboured and tired, and we ran out of ideas. We offered nothing in the second-half and that's bitterly disappointing. At the end of the night we got what we deserved. I expected more from us. We were all over the place.

    And that's that.

Callum Robinson's hat-trick and a Shane Duffy header keeps the Irish momentum going as Stephen Kenny secures back-to-back wins for the first time.

Confidence should be reasonably high before Portugal visit the Aviva on 11 November. Given the Republic's late heartache in Faro, they will be out for revenge against Cristiano Ronaldo and co.

    We're into injury-time.

Realistically, Northern Ireland's World Cup hopes have been over since Saturday.

Unless something dramatic happens it will be mathematically over in four minutes.

It's sad to see, but it's happening with a bit of a whimper.

Stephen Kenny's enjoyed himself this evening.

The Aviva hasn't always been a happy home under him, but a remarkably poor Qatar side have allowed for plenty of first-pumping and smiles in the Irish dugout tonight.

Paddy McNair wins a free-kick on the right. There's plenty of pressure coming from the men in white now.

McNair dusts himself down to take it, and it's cleared to Shane Ferguson on the edge of the area.

He's attempted to repeat his heroics from Estonia but it's deflected and it spins into the night.

    Another potential chance gone.
