  2. 'We have to fight through this'published at 22:44 Greenwich Mean Time 4 March 2021

    FT: Liverpool 0-1 Chelsea

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, speaking to BBC Sport: "You saw the game, it was a tight one, it was a close one, it was an intense one. We forced them to make mistakes, they forced us to make mistakes. They used one, we didn't use ours.

"Against Chelsea it would be surprising to play them off the pitch but we were in the game. It is just annoying to talk about the same things again and again. It is tough. We have to fight through this.

"With the individual skills of Mason it was an easy goal. We should have defended it better. In these games you don't create 20 chances, you have to use the few you have.

"These things make the difference. To get back to where you get these moments you have to work, be stubborn and fight hard. We will get there again because it is still in the boys."

On taking off Salah: "In that moment he looked like he felt the intensity tonight and I didn't want to risk it. It is all fine, I make decisions that I think are right in the moment."

  3. 'A complete performance'published at 22:43 Greenwich Mean Time 4 March 2021

    FT: Liverpool 0-1 Chelsea

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel, speaking to BBC Sport: "I am very, very happy with the performance. It was clear we needed a complete performance in all aspects of the game. We did this, we were very brave with the ball and never lost intensity with the ball. We were always aggressive and very brave. This was the key. It was a top team performance and a deserved win.

"Both teams started in a high level of speed and intensity. We knew that, we told the team we don't want to give too much information. When you arrive in a match like this you cannot overthink it. We managed all situations very, very good. Very, very encouraging."

  4. ''We can't rely on the past'published at 22:36 Greenwich Mean Time 4 March 2021

    FT: Liverpool 0-1 Chelsea

    Liverpool

Liverpool defender Andy Robertson talking to Sky Sports: "These games are won and lost on fine margins and these goals can't happen. For us to get beaten on the counter attack is not good enough.

"Five home games without a win, that is nowhere near good enough. Nothing is going to help the fans at home and it is simply not good enough because games are running out for what we want.

"Too many heads are going down when we go 1-0 down, we cant do that. Football is about taking knocks.

"We can't rely on the past. Last season is over with, it is done. We have nowhere near been good enough to what Liverpool team should be. We are dropping further and it is not good enough.

"Games are running out and we need to put the pressure on the teams below us. People will think we are down and out and we need to get the results to show them we are not. At the moment we are not doing that."

  5. 'A massive blow'published at 22:31 Greenwich Mean Time 4 March 2021

    FT: Liverpool 0-1 Chelsea

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, speaking to Sky Sports: "The individual quality of Mason Mount in that moment made the difference. It was a tight game, intense game. Both teams invested a lot. That is it pretty much.

"They had the goal they scored which was offside. The second half another counter attack, we had more situations around, the great one with Sadio Mane and other situations where we did not score.

"You have to defend differently and we didn't do well there. There are a lot of things out there you have to consider. In the end we conceded one goal, we made the mistake there, the other was offside and you can say it was good defending but with all the possession we had you need to have more chances. Everything was really good until the final pass.

"Unfortunately we cannot say it is only at home. It is not about Anfield or whatever, it is in general, too often. In the decisive moments we have to improve. We have to show our quality in these moment and we don't do that often enough.

"I just brought on fresh legs. Mo [Salah] looked like today he suffered a bit, he played a lot of games. I could have taken off Sadio or Bobby, that is all clear but at that moment it looked like Mo. Milner we bought on to wake them up a bit and keep them in the game because we needed one situation.

"It is a massive blow. It is not done yet. We have to win football games."

  6. 'A six-point game'published at 22:29 Greenwich Mean Time 4 March 2021

    FT: Liverpool 0-1 Chelsea

    Chelsea

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel talking to Sky Sports: "We played with courage, had excellent moments with the ball, had moments we needed to suffer Never lost the attitude and desire and a deserved win and big performance.

"It was a very good team performance. They ask you a lot of questions and we need to have the answers.

"Everyone was very brave and everyone was sharp. It is a six-point game because the others lose. The race is on, there are still 11 games to go. We go step by step. We can never rest and never celebrate, there is no time."

I was so excited to see us sign thiago but he's turned out to be a dud, so off the pace off the premiership. Where the so called world class player we were supposed to have signed.

    Ash

I don't want to write Liverpool and Klopp off, but didn't a similar thing happen to Klopp's Borussia Dortmund in his final season in charge? Worrying times.

    Chris

Is it possible to be part of the best and worst Liverpool side in their history within the space of 12 months.

What do you think, then? Put your thumbs on the line and answer this - will Liverpool finish in the top four?

Thumbs up for yes, thumbs down for no.

  9. 'Everyone is really together'published at 22:18 Greenwich Mean Time 4 March 2021

    Liverpool 0-1 Chelsea

    Chelsea

Chelsea goalscorer Mason Mount, speaking to Sky Sports: "Where the season is at the moment it is very tight in the top four, we are in and around and we want to keep pushing. We have been on a good run recently, we have been keeping clean sheets but not scoring enough. It was very good to score tonight.

"The game plan was to press them high and not let them have the ball. We had to be brave and try and win the ball up high. Most of the time they defend high and that is where the goal came from.

"Massive win. Every game now is a big win, we need to get as many three points as we can. We have the team to do it, we want to keep going.

"I just try to give my best performance wise if I am starting or coming off the bench. I feel like everyone has been really together. I am obviously happy, I am happy to get a goal today. I want to score more."

  10. 'Liverpool are in trouble'published at 22:11 Greenwich Mean Time 4 March 2021

    Liverpool 0-1 Chelsea

    Chris Sutton
Former Premier League striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

Klopp really rattled on the touch line, having words with the fourth official but I don't know what about. His team were well beaten tonight, Chelsea were the better team I thought it was comfortable from them.

In the second half Edouard Mendy didn't really have to make a save of note. Chelsea saw this through comfortably, Liverpool are massively in trouble if they're hoping to finish top four. They're probably going to have to win the Champions League for them to qualify again! Chelsea are certainly one of the favourites now for a top four finish.

It is the first time in Liverpool's history that they have lost five home games in a row.

That incredible 68-game unbeaten run must seem so long ago.

Klopp saying there won't be a rebuild in the summer, but this team is so clearly burnt out it's worrying.

    Bill

This Liverpool team is starting to become an embarrassment, once again there's no inventiveness, no passion and they seem to have given up before they even kick off. Pathetic.

All over and Liverpool suffer a fifth home defeat in a row.

My word that was comfortable for Chelsea.

Timo Werner has been a massive threat to that Liverpool back line - they've been petrified about his pace, movement and his runs in behind. Really unlucky to have that goal ruled out and then second half he's caused a threat and worked hard for the team. No goals once again but a decent performance.

Liverpool are keeping up the pressure although it is hard to say that this Chelsea defence is in any danger of buckling under the pressure. They do seem pretty comfortable.

Oooh that's as close as Liverpool have come as Roberto Firmino gets to the byline and plays the ball across the box, it bounces off the back of Mason Mount, the ball bounces around before falling to Ozan Kabak but he can't get the better of Edouard Mendy.

Where was the Liverpool player gambling on that Firmino cross?

  19. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 81 mins

Liverpool make a third change as James Milner comes on for Thiago, while a Chelsea change sees goalscorer Mason Mount replaced by Mateo Kovacic.

Eleven minutes to go and Liverpool are in danger of finishing a home game without a shot on target, a bad stat at any level of football.
