    West Bromwich Albion

West Brom manager Sam Allardyce: “Not in the context of what we wanted to achieve and how we played [a point is not enough]. We have suffered badly over our lack of quality finishing teams off.

“It’s going back to Manchester United here, Burnley away, Everton here when we had chances but lost instead of drawing and then today.

“I can’t blame the lads for the quality of the effort they showed with playing on Thursday night but unfortunately that final piece of the jigsaw isn’t there at the moment. You look at those four games and it could be four wins easily. It’s four points instead of 12 and we could have been challenging the other boys and unsettled them that little bit more. So the task now is almost every game has to be a win to get out of the trouble we are in.

“Performances hopefully will stay the same. We can only try and win as many as we can and see if anyone above us slips up.

"Newcastle didn’t have a game [in the week]. I don’t think we got fairly treated by the Premier League having to play at noon today.

"We need fresh legs. They would have been an awful lot fitter had they not played on Thursday and if we could have had this fixture on Monday or even eight o’clock tonight we’d have been that bit fresher and it might have been the difference between scoring or not scoring.”

Fulham have looked very dangerous from set pieces the past few weeks and you've got two 'rookie' defenders in that Liverpool back line. Even if it seems like a long shot, you have to test that defence.

  3. 'So close yet so far. The story of everything'published at 14:23 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March 2021

    West Brom 0-0 Newcastle

    West Bromwich Albion

West Brom boss Sam Allardyce, speaking to BBC Sport: "Not enough obviously but we have to carry on trying to win games of football when they come round.

"The players need to keep their chins up and play like they are playing. The only thing missing is converting the chances we create. We have got the defensive side of it spot on now.

"The players have to keep doing what they are doing and try and be determined enough to try and change the scoreline themselves by putting the ball in the back of the net. We certainly had enough chances to accumulate 12 points in the last few games and not just four.

"We have been so close yet so far. That is the story of everything."

Ademola Lookman runs in behind Neco Williams again from Harrison Reed's through ball. He crosses and Rhys Williams heads behind.

Jurgen Klopp has to address this.

Ooh, clever effort. Ademola Lookman has the beating of Neco Williams every time. He cuts in with ease and finds Josh Maja, who tries to clip the ball into the net with a first-time finish. Idea was right, execution was not. Wide.

Let's be honest, you wouldn't call Fulham favourites for this game, but no one will be surprised if they win. LFC unrecognisable from last season.

    Chris

Lookman vs Neco Williams is not smart. Agree Klopp had to make changes but can't make that defence any weaker.

Mohamed Salah is growing into the game now. He runs onto a long ball, flicks it up to hold off a Fulham defender, spins and volleys it wide from 20 yards.

  9. 'Delighted with attitude and spirit'published at 14:16 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March 2021

    West Brom 0-0 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Steve Bruce, speaking to BBC Sport: "We are disappointed that we didn't win, whether we did enough to win it, who knows?

"I was delighted with their attitude and spirit. We showed a real desire to get something out of the game. In terms of the problems we have had, in terms of injuries not rows, it was important.

"We have been hamstrung a bit with big players at the top end of the pitch. For their effort and attitude I could not ask for anything more.

"That little bit of quality at times we lacked a bit but that is what you pay money for. Where we have invested over the last few months unfortunately they are all injured.

"I never had any doubt, with Newcastle things seem to get blown out of proportion. Rows happen every other day at every other club up and own the country.

"Eleven games to go, we've done OK. The last five or six games there's only been Chelsea and Manchester United that have beaten us. We will take a point and move on."

    Newcastle United

Newcastle manager Steve Bruce: “It certainly wasn’t a classic was it? We are disappointed we haven’t come here and won but we always knew it was going to be difficult considering the circumstances.

"We take a point and move on. I couldn’t fault the effort and endeavour, that was evident for everyone to see but at certain times we just lacked that final bit of quality in the final third which deserted us a bit. Overall a draw was probably a fair result.

"We’ve had a difficult week and I don’t want to regurgitate it but the players have showed they are on the same hymn sheet as everyone else. We are determined to do our best in terms of staying in the Premier League.

"With the problems we have had not just during the week but with injuries I thought they did as well as they could."

On set-pieces: “We’ve tried to work and be better and be more inventive and it nearly worked. We have to find a way. We have been handicapped being without our three most creative players. We have to do our utmost to stay out of the bottom three.”

Fulham are defensively a top team, they really are. The last six games in the league, they are the best league in the team defensively. That's extraordinary, they're just not giving much away so Scott Parker has to get them going at the other end of the pitch.

Some teams coming to Anfield are half beaten before they even turn up in the way they set up defensively - that is not Fulham. They've got a bit of belief in themselves and they're really attack minded today. They've got nothing to lose.

Fulham have six loanees in their XI. Reminds me a recent Football Manager game where I took over an Argentine second division club called Brown, named after an Irish guy, and just filled the team with Irish loanees.

For anyone wondering, Michael Obafemi finished second in the golden boot race but I lost the play-offs.
