  2. 'Luke Shaw was a problem'published at 21:43 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2021

FT: Man Utd 1-0 West Ham

    West Ham United

West Ham manager David Moyes speaking to BBC Sport: "I'm just disappointed we didn't take something form the game. We did better in the last 20 minutes but there was nothing as good as what we've done in recent weeks and months.

"We set up to try and give them some problems, in turn what we found was Luke Shaw was a problem down the left [for us] and I had to make that situation better at half-time. They had some counter-attack moments but I thought we had periods where we played much better.

"We are upset. I'm not happy we've lost because I felt we had a chance to come here and put on a show. The players have done great and we'll go again and try and win the next one."

  3. Solskjaer swerves contract questionpublished at 21:42 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2021

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer swerved a question about an extension to his Manchester United contract.

It is only a matter of time before it happens but Solskjaer was giving nothing away in his post-match press conference.

"My thoughts are on doing my job as well as I can," he said.

  4. 'Our breaks were poor'published at 21:40 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2021

FT: Man Utd 1-0 West Ham

    West Ham United

West Ham manager David Moyes speaking to Sky Sports: "Disappointed that we have lost but parts of the game we played okay and other parts we didn't.

"The way we set up maybe didn't quite work. We changed it a bit at half time and again later on. It improved it a little bit. Manchester United grew into the game and caused us problems.

"I wanted to try and change it. We never really got up when we broke. Our breaks were really poor tonight. I've only just been told it was actually an own goal. Tonight it wasn't our night."

After making attacking substitutions: "We were much better and we played much better. Manchester United then had a 1-0 lead so it left it a bit more open as they had something to protect. In the last 15 minutes or so we did quite well."

"We are getting greedy now because we have enjoyed that feeling of winning. We don't feel good tonight. I don't enjoy coming here and losing 1-0 which shows how far we have come. I'm disappointed with it but it shows we are doing much better."

Would you have done anything different in hindsight? "No. No."

On the referee: "I just thought there were one or two things which were a bit soft. There were some timewasting and we had a corner right at the end which I felt we should have had. It was just a bit tight, that was all it was."

  5. 'Need to be more clinical'published at 21:39 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2021

FT: Man Utd 1-0 West Ham

    Manchester United

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to BBC Radio 5 Live on his decision not to make a substitute: "I didn't feel the need to. The attacking end and defending worked really well I felt."

On Harry Maguire's on-pitch discussions with players: "They all needed it. Either digging out or calming down. Maybe it was more calming down because I know the attitude was there.

"We wanted so much to recover from what happened on Thursday night, with the last-minute equaliser from Milan, and the attitude was spot on - just calm down and trust yourselves.

"We need to be more clinical - that helps me as well with my heart. Fortunately, we defended fantastically. Dean Henderson did not have a save to make and I guess that is a good sign."

No subs, but think Ole has learnt a lesson. Previous games we've thrown defenders on, changed the shape and dropped points. Kept it the same and saw it out. Good three points.

    Richard, Manchester

Moyes didn't learn from the FA Cup game. If we had gone for it we would have had a much better chance but we replicated the performance and the result!

  7. 'We want big, fast starts'published at 21:34 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2021

FT: Man Utd 1-0 West Ham

    Manchester United

Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay speaking to BBC Sport: "It's a pleasing win. It was a difficult game. That's why they're so high up. It was a dfifficult win. We knew they might press to see if we're alive and awake, but we knew we would be in their half majority of the game. Bowen and Antonio got free a couple of times. A massive three points.

"That's the message in the warm up - big, fast starts. We have to show intention, that can take you a long way."

On facing AC Milan in the Europa League on Thursday: "It will be tough. It's many years since I went there with Manchester United. It's a chance to take a big step forward in our season. They are a tough team, everyone saw they have real quality. It's not a time to approach it any other way than full throttle and as if it's the biggest game of our season - which it is."

  9. 'We earned the spaces'published at 21:31 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2021

FT: Man Utd 1-0 West Ham

    Manchester United

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer speaking to BBC Sport: "It is always hard in the Premier League, but I felt we controlled the game quite well after the first 15 minutes. We didn't start well and couldn't find a red shirt but the attitude is always there. We built pressure and momentum and had enough chances in the end. We earned the spaces. We worked really hard from the front tirelessly. Spaces opened up and then we can see the quality in our players."

On Mason Greenwood: "He deserved a goal he was excellent tonight. He's getting there. He's growing and maturing all the time."

On getting players back his week: "We hope so, we hope to have Edinson [Cavani] and Anthony [Martial] available, maybe Paul [Pogba] and David [de Gea] is finished with quarantine. Not bad players!"

On another clean sheet: "It tells us we're a team that work for each other. It's never easy to earn a clean sheet. If you have clean sheets you have a good foundation. The front four worked so hard, they were dangerous and pressed really well."

  10. 'It's a chance missed'published at 21:28 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2021

FT: Man Utd 1-0 West Ham

    West Ham United

West Ham's Jarrod Bowen to Sky Sports: "Obviously disappointed. In the second half we were better with our press but we shot ourselves in the foot when we broke on the counter-attack and we didn't take opportunities to get crosses in the box. We will learn from it and go again.

"When you play Manchester United you will have spells when you aren't on the ball so you have to keep your shape. We hung in there when we needed to and we did have opportunities but we weren't clinical enough.

"In the first half we weren't that great so going in at 0-0 was probably good for us. The second half was about building and staying in the game, to nick that goal we wanted. We were pressing and running after them but when we got to the final third we were rash with that final ball.

"We knew it was a big opportunity for us. It's a chance missed for us so we're disappointed. These things happen but the main thing is to react from the defeat and put it right next weekend."

Paul Bungay: Moyes always seems to set up too cautiously against the big teams. Played for a draw and came unstuck when we conceded.

Dave Dixon: Fantastic three points but to see key players absolutely exhausted in the last 20 and not a single sub being made. Doesn't bode well for the trip to the San Siro. No excuses for Ole not to use the bench. Amad for Marcus and Matic for Bruno no-brainers.

  12. 'No shame in a tough game'published at 21:24 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2021

FT: Man Utd 1-0 West Ham

    Manchester United

Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay speaking to Sky Sports: "Really important to win a third tough game in a week. They set up well and they have good players. The message at half time was to keep playing at the tempo we can play at. It's about not getting frustrated. When you play teams that sit in you have to play at the tempo you can play at. We tried our best to keep pushing."

On the goal: "It wasn't my goal, I know that. Sometimes you get a fortunate one like that."

On the race for the top-four: "We've had too many [late goals conceded] this season. There's no shame in a tough game against West Ham. It's sometimes the way to win, you can't always win four or five nil. A third game in a week is one you just have to win. It's Manchester City have had a terrific run and we're doing our best to try and keep on them."

West Ham might have been luckier if they had tried a shot on target.

    Fletch, Doncaster

I can see these teams finishing in Champions League spots. Top three are certain to be there and Chelsea will edge fourth spot.

    Ammar Rao

For all the talent of Rashford and Martial, they are not natural goalscorers and that is what United are missing. Plenty of crosses in tonight but a natural goalscorer would be anticipating those crosses and getting on the end of them, not standing still once the cross has gone in.

  15. 'Make it hard for ourselves'published at 21:19 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2021

FT: Man Utd 1-0 West Ham

    Manchester United

Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solksjaer to Sky Sports: "As expected, they are always going to make it hard for you. We could have been more comfortable towards the end as we had a few decent chances to finish it off. We like to make it hard for ourselves!

"It's about not giving them turnovers all the time. In the first 15 minutes we gave the ball away every time we attacked. It was a good set-play and we scored. You have to not open up stupidly as you know they are a threat on the counter-attack so we kept composed and organised.

"We created massive opportunities but the final pass or shot wasn't good enough. Could have been two or three easily. But then it could have ended up in our net at the end as they are a threat.

"We know West Ham are challenging to get in the top four so it was a big result and we kept a clean sheet again. The experience and confidence will come. Big week - Europa League and FA Cup - so we're looking forward to it. Hopefully get a few players back and put a good performance in."

David Moyes will feel unlucky to see his side lose to an own goal, but it was a dogged Manchester United performance. They dug in to get the result, showed a real desire at the end and managed to see out the game.

It was a fabulous three points as the top of that table gets really tight.
