  1. Seagulls failing to soarpublished at 11:25 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2021

    Southampton v Brighton (12:00 GMT)

Just how are Brighton in this mess? I appreciate that expected goals is not for everyone, but even taking into account its flaws the metric has Brighton as high as fifth in a hypothetical Premier League table.

Nonsense or not, there is a big disparity between that and the 17th-place slug-fest they're currently stuck in at the bottom.

The simple answer is probably a lack of a consistent, proper goalscorer or two. Had the likes of Neal Maupay and Leandro Trossard taken the good chances that have come their way they'd laugh all the way to mid-table.

We have four games on the slate today in the Premier League. Some potentially cracking ones too. Here they are...

    Southampton v Brighton (12:00 GMT)

    Leicester v Sheffield United (14:00)

    Arsenal v Tottenham (16:30)

Man Utd v West Ham (19:15)

    Southampton v Brighton (12:00 GMT)

    Mark Lawrenson
    BBC football expert

For the first 15 minutes against Manchester City on Wednesday, Southampton played like they were the Pep Guardiola side. They were fabulous.

It didn't last though. Once you get past their high press, Saints seem to have a soft centre and they concede a lot of goals.

Brighton's problem is at the other end of the pitch and, despite some decent performances, their run of results has left them in the thick of the relegation battle.

They will feel their performances have deserved far more than their haul of only two points from their past five league games, but maybe it is time for their boss Graham Potter to say 'let's just make sure of getting a draw' to stop the rot.

The Seagulls have never beaten Saints in the Premier League and I don't think that will change here, but they are good enough to get something out of it.

    Prediction: 1-1

Still no Ings then. A proper blow.

Kyle Walker-Peters being fit and raring to go is a big boost, though. He provides that driving dynamism down the right.

As for Brighton... Danny Welbeck could do with having a good game. He and Neal Maupay need to start providing more haymakers to go with the jabs.

Southampton make five changes from their rollercoaster 5-2 midweek defeat at Manchester City as Ralph Hasenhuttl shuffles his pack, although top scorer Danny Ings remains out with a muscle injury.

Fraser Forster replaces Alex McCarthy in goal, while Kyle Walker-Peters, Takumi Minamino, Ibrahima Diallo and Nathan Tella all return to the starting XI.

Southampton XI: Forster, Walker-Peters, Vestergaard, Bednarek, Bertrand, Armstrong, Diallo, Ward-Prowse, Minamino, Tella, Adams.

Subs: McCarthy, Stephens, Salisu, Ramsay, Watts, Redmond, Djenepo, N'Lundulu, Ferry.

Brighton boss Graham Potter, meanwhile, keeps faith with goalkeeper Robert Sanchez despite his late mistake that cost them a point in last Saturday's 2-1 defeat by Leicester.

Danny Welbeck comes in to the starting XI for Alexis Mac Allister in Brighton's solitary change.

Brighton XI: Sanchez, White, Dunk, Burn, Veltman, Lallana, Bissouma, Gross, Trossard, Maupay, Welbeck.

Subs: Steele, Moder, Propper, Izquierdo, Alzate, Tau, Zeqiri, Jahanbakhsh, Mac Allister.

There will have been an almighty sigh of relief along stretches of the south coast last night as Man City started raining in second-half goals at Craven Cottage.

Aguero and the lads have helped keep the wolf from the door for another week.

The battle is far from won, though. Today, Southampton and Brighton will be looking to put points between them and Fulham at the bottom of the Premier League.

Who are they playing? Each other.

    Did someone say 'six-pointer'?
