    HT: Aston Villa 0-1 Tottenham

Tottenham have been in better form but that's not really saying a lot. Dean Smith will probably just try and changes things but Spurs probably won't they'll be happy to just defend this 1-0 and maybe hit on the break. Lucas Moura has been the best player for me he's tried every opportunity to look forward and play forward.

Villa are probably just going to have to go in and take a bit of a volley from the manager and try and turn things around in the second half.

    That's the break.

Tottenham will head in the happier of the sides thanks to Carlos Vinicius' goal.

Not been a great flow to the game, neither side really able to get into a rhythm despite Spurs taking the lead - all a bit scrappy in this first half.

Lots of negativity around Spurs and justifiably so given recent results, but it is still entirely possible that they finish in the top 4 and win the League Cup. Pretty sure every Spurs fan would have taken that at the start of the year.

Harry Kane leaps highest but John McGinn does just enough to put him off and the forward can't make a good connection. Villa clear the next corner, but only as far as Tanguy Ndombele and his sliced effort loops on to the roof of the net.

Oh dear. Not sure what Bertrand Traore was trying to do there, he volleys behind for a corner under little pressure from a throw-in.

Trezeguet collects on the left, cuts on to his right foot and looks to glide a ball on to the head of Ollie Watkins, but the England forward is a touch isolated in the middle.

Villa haven't been able to really threaten since going behind.

Spurs survive the corner and then go bursting down the left through Sergio Reguilon. The full-back cuts a pass back to the edge of the area, where Carlos Vinicius is waiting but his first-time effort is blocked.

Silly, silly foul from Davinson Sanchez - not for the first time today - and this is perhaps the most dangerous position of the lot of them.

Matt Targett is standing over the ball, he clips it in and Lucas Moura flicks it behind.

Carlos Vinicius has scored nine goals in nine starts for Spurs in all competitions (from just 12 shots on target), including three in his most recent two for the club.

By far and away the outstanding move of the game - could probably argue it's the only move in terms of passing and running. In the end Spurs got plenty of forwards into Aston Villa's penalty area and it was an extremely well worked goal.

All the goalkeepers now are told get it down and pass it - if there's any danger you should stick it in the stands but it's in the head of goalkeepers now 'you've got to play it out from the back and pass it' - sometimes you've just got to get rid of it!

    Carlos Vinicius (29 mins)

    Out of the blue!

Tottenham really haven't looked like scoring, but the visitors capitalise on a poor clearance by Emiliano Martínez as Harry Kane slides a lovely pass into Lucas Moura's path and the Brazilian cuts it across goal to give Carlos Vinicius a tap in.

That's his first Premier League goal, and how Spurs needed that.

Darren Bell: Spurs are no longer playing as a team, just individuals. At least under Poch we had togetherness and played for each other. We look tired and uninterested. Levy to blame, Jose was never the answer for Spurs, plays too negative

Ollie Watkins tends to drift down that left hand side anyway but he covers so much ground, he must be fantastic to play with because he would chase a paper bag in the park for you!

Easy now. Carlos Vinicius knocks Ezri Konsa over and neither player is happy about it, briefly squaring up to one another.

We've only had one shot so far, in the fifth minute from Harry Kane, and even that was blocked before it reached the box.

Kane won't leave the Premier league. He is hunting down Alan Shearers goal record. He needs to go Manchester City to win all the trophies he deserves Then come back to Spurs to beat Jimmy Greaves goal scoring record.

Matt Targett's initial delivery is too long, but he arrives at the back post as Bertrand Traore helps it back in and surely has to have a go at goal... no, he tries to cut it back and Spurs can clear. Not sure he realised he was in on goal there!

Jose Mourinho is fuming as he watches Davinson Sanchez bundle over Ollie Watkins, to give Villa a free-kick on the left in a dangerous position.

  19. Postpublished at 19 mins

Bertrand Traore looks to take the scenic route to goal but is marshalled well by Sergio Reguilon. The Villa forward gets another crack at it moments later, helping the ball into Trezeguet's path, but there was an offside in there somewhere.

Spurs looking pretty lethargic at the back, mind...

  20. Postpublished at 17 mins

John McGinn is snapping away in midfield. He catches Harry Kane, just, and Spurs look to set Carlos Vinicius free. The Brazilian is offside.
