    Tottenham 1-1 Southampton

There is something pleasingly neat about the two goals coming in the 30th and 60th minutes. Splitting the game perfectly.

    90th minute winner?

Spurs have been better this half. The goal has given them a bit more of a spring in their step too. Son is more involved.

Spurs are like little lost lambs, no one showing any leadership. Southampton showing no mercy and enjoying having a go at a team that's down, fair enough. I've supported Spurs since 1961. Can't stop now...

Nathan Tella is absolutely fuming. He beats a man down the left and then tries to drag the ball with him after overrunning it slightly. He feels he has been pulled back in the box. Bale certainly had a hand on him. Risky with the cameras watching.

    Gareth Bale

    Level!

Gareth Bale keeps his cool after gathering the ball following Lucas Moura's blocked shot. He takes a touch and curls a shot past McCarthy to bring Spurs level against his former club.

It is Tottenham's first shot on target.

    Fine finish, awful goal music.

One enforced change to the Aston Villa side from last time out as 19-year-old Jacob Ramsey comes in for Trezeguet, who needs knee surgery. Influential captain Jack Grealish is once again missing so Tyrone Mings will lead the team out.

Aston Villa XI: Martinez, Cash, Konsa, Mings, Targett, Nakamba, Luiz, Traore, McGinn, Ramsey, Watkins.

Substitutes: Chukwuemeka, Heaton, Taylor, Barkley, El Ghazi, Engels, Elmohamady, Hause, Davis.

Kevin de Bruyne is not involved after limping off at Wembley while Gundogan is captain.

Man City XI: Ederson, Walker, Stones, Dias, Zinchenko, Silva, Rodri, Gundogan, Mahrez, Jesus, Foden.

Ibrahima Diallo replaces the injured Ings. He really has suffered, the Saints striker. Had more than his fair share of injuries.

This is worrying for the visitors. Danny Ings has limped out of the game. Not sure how he injured himself. The visitors are taking no chances, though.

That pretty much sums it up for Spurs so far. Ndombele fluffs an effort from range that dribbles tamely out of play.

Shortly after, down the other end, Ings goes for goal from distance himself but curls his shot straight at Lloris.

Ryan Mason will be looking to others in the coaching staff for guidance - he's not had long to get what he wants into the players heads, not had long on the training pitch with them, so it's a difficult night. Spurs haven't been good enough, they're carrying on from where they left off.

  12. Postpublished at 19:10 British Summer Time 21 April 2021

Gareth Bale goes for glory against his former club with a dipping effort from range that is comfortably saved by Alex McCarthy.

Lo Celso to the rescue. The midfielder nips in to tackle Armstrong near the edge of his own box as Saints threaten.

Not seen much of Son in this game at all. He scored four in the reverse fixture and is very much the man Spurs need to step up in Kane's absence.

He gets a chance to shoot from the edge of the box but his effort is blocked. Not sure he actually hit it very well anyway.

Looks like Moura is fine to carry on after a bit of treatment. Last thing Spurs need is another injury to an attacking player.

Ryan Mason had a big job on his hands during that half-time break. They were distinctly second best in the first 45 minutes. Has he done enough to inspire them for the second.

Ralph Hasenhuttl, by contrast, will be asking for pretty much the same.

    We are back under way.

Chris Baldwin: Spurs showing you can’t erase 17 months of Mourinho in 2 days. This is a team with zero confidence. I like Mason but he’s 29 with no experience they’ve got no chance of top 4 now. Spurs need someone sooner rather than later to begin the clear out ahead of next year

John Nixon: Really smart by Spurs, preparing for Sunday’s game with City by making Southampton look like City.
