  9. Red card 'a rubbish decision' - Moyespublished at 19:59 British Summer Time 24 April 2021

    FT: West Ham 0-1 Chelsea

    West Ham United

West Ham manager David Moyes to Sky Sports: "“We were in the game. I didn’t think we played particularly well, especially in the first half but I thought we played much better in the second half. We showed a bit of character and a bit more desire in the second half and we affected them more.

“But the red card changes the game as far as the last 10-15 minutes – we were hoping to put them under even more pressure. But I’m pleased that the players got at it and that the game didn’t go away from us because it could have done – we are talking about a really good team here in Chelsea."

On Fabio Balbuena's red card: “I think it’s a decision made by somebody who has never played the game. I don’t know where Fabio Balbuena is supposed to plant his foot.

"If they do think that, then you’ll look at the one a few minutes later which was the same with Vladimir Coufal and Rudiger – it was a very similar challenge but they never did anything about it, so is there a consistent message to both of them?

"I don’t see how it’s a red card. He’s kicked through the ball, I don’t think for one minute there’s a bit of malice in that trying to catch him. I thought it was a rubbish decision.

“But we’ll go again, we’re in a decent position, there’s games to play and hopefully we are right in the mix for some form of European football right to the end and I’ll keep trying to push to make that the Champions League if we can."

In 2021, only Chelsea and Manchester City have kept more Premier League clean sheets than Brighton's tally of eight.

A win will take them 10 points clear of the drop and basically job done with a handful of games left.

The players are heading out onto the pitch now.

  11. 'A really poor decision'published at 19:55 British Summer Time 24 April 2021

    FT: West Ham 0-1 Chelsea

    West Ham United

West Ham manager David Moyes, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "We had a big game against them last year when we were in a relegation battle and we won that won. This year it was a battle for the Champions League and we couldn’t win it.

"We showed character in the second half to make a better game of it. If we can get all our players back and play Chelsea again tomorrow, it would give us a better hand. We were always in the game, we're just disappointed we have nothing to show for it.

"We wanted to be in the mix right to the end. If we can give ourselves a chance with the games we’ve got and be in the mix for European football, it’d be great. We’ve been fourth a couple of times this season. It feels good.

"It’s great that we have a chance to get back into the top four. We’re playing against Chelsea and trying to compete, but we just weren’t quite good enough today to do that."

On Fabian Balbuena's red card: "I can only say it’s someone who’s never played the game who’s made the decision. Where’s he meant to put his foot? There was a similar incident with Coufal on Rudiger. That would have at least merited a yellow if the first one was a red. I think we’ve had a day where the refereeing has been really poor.

"Was it a clear and obvious error that the referee missed? It was a really poor decision because we were in the ascendancy at that time."

  12. Avoiding more unwanted records?published at 19:53 British Summer Time 24 April 2021

Sheffield United have equalled the club record for most league defeats in a season. They previously lost 26 in the 1975-76 top flight and 2010-11 Championship.

Meanwhile, the Premier League record for most defeats in a season is 29. The top-flight record is 31, set by Stoke City in 1984-85, which was a 42-match season.

  13. 'The main thing is not to lose the next game'published at 19:51 British Summer Time 24 April 2021

    FT: West Ham 0-1 Chelsea

    West Ham United

West Ham forward Jarrod Bowen to Sky Sports: “It’s only right we leave everything on the pitch, in the second half we were high up the pitch, pressing them more than in the first half. They started strongly and had a spell which we expected because they are a good side and you have to respect that.

“I feel like the last quarter of the first half we started to have a spell and get back into it and the goal before half-time killed us.

“I think the game wasn’t really full of clear-cut chances. It was just little bits here and there, a bit scrappy.

“We’re disappointed, we’ve lost two on the bounce so the main thing now is that we don’t lose the next game so all our focus is into the next game and putting this one behind us.

“We’ve got a tough run-in now, every game is going to be different, every game is going to be difficult for different reasons. We’ve got five games left now so put it all in and that’s all we can ask of ourselves."

  14. No Blades bounce against Brightonpublished at 19:47 British Summer Time 24 April 2021

Sheff Utd v Brighton (20:00 BST)

Sheffield United are now officially relegated, although they will have known their fate for weeks.

Sometimes you see relegated teams start playing well and winning once they know they are definitely down but I don't think Sheffield United will do that.

Brighton got a good point against Chelsea and they have shown they are defensively sound. It's just in attack where they are often lacking a bit of spark - but they are still better than the Blades.

    Prediction: 0-2

  15. 'We played at a high, high level'published at 19:45 British Summer Time 24 April 2021

    FT: West Ham 0-1 Chelsea

    Chelsea

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "It was a six pointer. The win was well deserved. We played amazing in the first half. We did not come out of the dressing room with the same intensity as in the first half. We suffered a bit with their intensity, but I think we deserved to win. It’s a very important win.

"It was a tough match against Brighton. You can see in the statistics that they’re an underrated team, so if you can’t reach the top level you have to accept that you draw. Today we played at a high, high level against a strong opponent. It was a good response."

On upcoming opponents Real Madrid: "We only have two days to recover. We need to be very careful now in the recovery process. It’s clearly something very special. They’re the biggest club in the last 10 years of the Champions League. To arrive with the confidence and the trust in ourselves that we can perform in these matches is a good feeling."

On Timo Werner’s goal: "It was well deserved today because it was a good performance. He was great at holding the ball and distributing the balls. He could have had a second goal and after that he lost a bit of confidence. He was also a bit tired towards the end, but it was a good performance."

  16. 'We knew we could deliver'published at 19:41 British Summer Time 24 April 2021

    FT: West Ham 0-1 Chelsea

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel to Sky Sports: "The boys are very, very happy in the dressing room, it was a great performance, an amazing result and I think a well-deserved win for us.

"The first 10-15 minutes in the second half, we did not come out very well from the dressing room but the last half-hour was excellent and the first half was excellent.

"It was a pretty normal preparation and we did not talk one more word about Super League from Tuesday on. I felt everybody was very concentrated and enjoying the focus on the game.

"We said we could arrive with confidence because before we have had crucial away matches on the highest level in the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup and we knew we could deliver and win these matches."

On match-winner Timo Werner: "He always gives everything, he could have made it more comfortable but I am very happy because he played a very good match."

  17. 'It was really important for me'published at 19:39 British Summer Time 24 April 2021

    FT: West Ham 0-1 Chelsea

    Chelsea

Chelsea striker Timo Werner, speaking to Sky Sports: "The second chance I have to score, but I have to come back slowly. One goal is enough. Two goals might be too much for the beginning!

"I’m very happy that we won this game. It’s a big win for us in the race for the top four. It’s the best feeling after winning a game to score a goal. It was really important for me and for the whole team. It’s great to be back on the scoresheet.

"Callum [Hudson-Odoi] said to me I’ll score today, and 30 seconds later Tammy [Abraham] came to me and said I’d score today. They told me to point to them when I score.

"This season it’s not only the confidence, maybe it’s also luck. Last year the ball always went in, this year it’s different. I’m confident that the chances like my second one will also go in in the next weeks and months.

"The draw against Brighton was tough for us because we wanted to get the win before the West Ham game. Now we have this gap to West Ham. It was really important ahead of a big game on Tuesday, when we play against Real Madrid."
