Sunderland fans react after their defeat by Charlton in the 2019 League One play-off final

You can imagine both of these sides were watching last night's game between Blackpool and and Oxford and hoping the U's pulled off a remarkable comeback.

As mentioned in the 15:15 BST entry, the Seasiders are the play-off kings, with five wins from seven finals contested.

For Black Cats and Imps fans the play-offs have been... well, a lot less kind.

Neither side have ever won promotion through the play-offs (Sunderland did end up going up in 1990 but lost the final to Swindon, who were denied promotion because of financial irregularities) and both can point to recent end-of-season heartache.

Jack Ross took Sunderland to the League One play-off final in 2019 only for Charlton to come back from a goal down and consign them to another season in the third tier and Lincoln City, who made the League Two play-offs five seasons in a row between 2003 and 2007 without winning promotion, were beaten by Exeter City in the 2018 League Two play-off semi-finals.

Thomas Frank accepts his Brentford side rode their luck slightly in the first half against Bournemouth, and is hoping to finish the job against Swansea or Barnsley next Saturday.

"Of course there were some key situations that went our way," the Bees boss told Sky Sports.

"For me, the penalty and the red card were clear. Vitaly's goal was a bit fortunate, but we built pressure on Bournemouth.

"I can't make sure of anything, but I will make sure we are 100% prepared for the final. We will give everything and, hopefully with the experience of last year, it will be enough."

If this afternoon's game between Sunderland and Lincoln is anything like the fare served up over at Bloomfield Road last night then we're in for an absolute cracker.

Blackpool looked set to cruise into the League One play-off final after dismantling Oxford 3-0 at the Kassam Stadium on Tuesday to leave the second leg looking like a mere formality.

The U's took an early lead through Matty Taylor to give themselves an outside chance of pulling off something incredible but the hosts then bagged two in three minutes through Elliot Embleton and Kenny Dougall to stretch their aggregate lead to 5-1 at half-time.

Oxford, to their credit, kept going and equalised on the night through Rob Atkinson only for Jerry Yates to quickly re-assert Blackpool's four-goal lead.

Karl Robinson's men did at least have the final word as Olamide Shadipo made it 3-3 on the night.

This will be an eighth play-off final for Blackpool, more than anyone else, and, worryingly for Sunderland and Lincoln fans, the Seasiders' record when they do reach the final is mightily impressive. They've won five of their seven play-off finals to date, also more than anyone else.

Unsurprisingly Sunderland have named a very attacking XI, with experienced forward Chris Maguire back in as one of four changes.

Lincoln make two changes from the 11 that started on Wednesday night, Alex Palmer is back in goal after concussion and centre-half Lewis Monstma is in for the injured Adam Jackson.

Sunderland XI: Burge, Wright, O’Nien, Gooch, McFadzean; Scowen, Leadbitter, Maguire, McGeady; Stewart, Wyke.

Subs: Matthews, Flanagan, Power, O’Brien, Diamond, Winchester, Jones.

Lincoln City XI: Palmer, Poole, Monstma, Eyoma, Edun, Bridcutt, Grant, Johnson, Scully, Rogers, Hopper.

Subs: Long, Sanders, Bramall, Walsh, McGrandles, Morton, Anderson.

Brentford head coach Thomas Frank has been reflecting on their victory over Bournemouth in the Championship play-off semi-final.

The Bees came back from 2-0 down on aggregate to seal a place at Wembley.

"This is what sport and especially football is capable of doing. The emotions are crazy," Frank told Sky Sports.

"It was an insane game. If I have to praise anyone first, it is the fans. It was an unbelievable atmosphere.

"After a minor mistake we grew into it and fully deserved to win the game.

"Right from the off, we were better and more aggressive. We kept doing that and got a well-deserved penalty. From there we didn't look back."

You don't need to tell Sunderland and Lincoln fans how much fortunes can change in football in a short period of time.

Five years ago Sam Allardyce had steered Sunderland to another great escape from relegation from the Premier League, while Lincoln City had just registered a 13th-placed finish in the National League.

    Now?

The two meet at the Stadium of Light for the second leg of their League One play-off semi-final with Black Cats gaffer Lee Johnson saying it's his team who are now the underdogs after Wednesday's 2-0 defeat.

Can they overhaul the deficit to set up a Wembley date with Blackpool or will it be Michael Appleton's men who take on the Seasiders in eight days time?

So, Brentford will get another chance to end their 74-year exile from the top flight at Wembley next Saturday.

The Bees will face either Swansea or Barnsley at the national stadium in the Championship play-off final.

The Swans lead the Tykes 1-0 on aggregate, with the second leg in south Wales at 18:30 GMT.

For Bournemouth, there will be no immediate return to the Premier League.

If you're just joining us, you missed a cracking play-off game.

Brentford overturned a first-leg deficit to beat Bournemouth and reach the Championship play-off final.

After Arnaut Danjuma's early goal, Ivan Toney, Vitaly Janely and Marcus Forss struck to give the Bees a 3-2 aggrefate win.

The turning point was arguably Chris Mepham's red card when the game was finely poised at 1-1.
