Cheltenham push for title, Bolton go for promotion

We thought we'd only have one automatic promotion place up for grabs this afternoon with second-placed Cambridge United in action on Friday night, but their dramatic 5-4 defeat by Harrogate Town means there are still two left to decide.

Cheltenham Town are already promoted, but they could also add the league title to that accolade later with a win at play-off contenders Newport County.

Bolton Wanderers will secure an immediate return to League One if they equal or better Morecambe's result this afternoon.

Third-placed Bolton host Exeter City who are just a couple of points outside the play-off places while Morecambe in fourth are at Walsall.

At the bottom, Southend United need nothing less than a win to keep their slim hopes of survival alive.

They travel to Barrow, who secured their own League Two status for next term in midweek but must also hope Scunthorpe United lose at Bradford City and Colchester United lose to play-off chasing Salford City.

Just a point for both Scunthorpe and Colchester would be enough to send Southend down irrespective of what they can do.

Peterborough on verge of promotion, two more could drop down

The game of the day in the division is without doubt the meeting of third and fourth as Peterborough United host Lincoln City.

A win or a draw for Posh will seal their automatic promotion after Doncaster denied them the chance on Tuesday.

Lincoln, already guaranteed a play-off place though, will hope to keep them sweating a bit longer if they can pick up the win.

At the other end, both Northampton Town and Rochdale need wins in their penultimate matches and hope Wigan Athletic drop points at promoted Hull City to take their respective survival hopes to the final day.

In terms of the play-off places, wins for Sunderland at Plymouth and Blackpool at relegation-threatened Northampton would book their places while just two points separate Oxford United, Portsmouth and Charlton Athletic who are in the mix behind those two.

Pompey face an AFC Wimbledon side who need just a point for survival.

  3. Bees hoping to buzz into play-offspublished at 14:52 British Summer Time 1 May 2021

    Brentford v Watford (15:00 BST)

Brentford will hope to send themselves into the play-offs in much better form than how they entered them last season.

Third place is up for grabs for Thomas Frank's side if they can get the right result against promoted Watford.

Wins against Bournemouth and Rotherham in the past week have given them a four-point cushion over the other three play-off sides but they will also be looking at opponents Watford with a sense of "what might've been".

The Hornets have won nine of their past 11 league games to book an immediate return to the Premier League, the sort of form Brentford were screaming out for while drawing six in seven during March and April.

  4. Time for another title party?published at 14:50 British Summer Time 1 May 2021

Norwich City v Reading (15:00 BST)

    Emi BuendiaImage source, Rex Features

A draw against Reading will be enough to crown Norwich City Championship champions for the second time in three years.

Daniel Farke's side booked their immediate return to the top flight a few weeks ago as other results fell in their favour but picking up the silverware has had to wait a bit longer after defeats by Bournemouth and fellow promoted club Watford.

Reading's bid for a play-off place ended last Sunday when they drew 2-2 against Swansea City but Veljko Paunovic still has plenty to be optimistic about after his first season in charge and a significant improvement in the Royals' fortunes compared with recent seasons.

  6. Can Chairboys bow out in style?published at 14:46 British Summer Time 1 May 2021

Wycombe Wanderers v Bournemouth (15:00 BST)

    WycombeImage source, PA Media

Wycombe's first season in the Championship has certainly not been short on incident and drama, but their visit to the second tier will come to an end today if they fail to beat Bournemouth.

Even then, a win will probably not be enough with Gareth Ainsworth's side six points off safety with just two games left and a vastly inferior goal difference compared with those around them.

One thing is for sure, Wycombe will give it their all and be fully committed as they have been every week during this campaign.

Play-off bound Bournemouth are in town looking to get themselves back in the groove before what's to come later this month after their six-game winning run was ended by Brentford last weekend.

  7. Terriers can put to bed any worriespublished at 14:44 British Summer Time 1 May 2021

Huddersfield Town v Coventry City (15:00 BST)

    CorberanImage source, Rex Features

Huddersfield Town will be looking to join their opponents Coventry City in booking another season of Championship football this afternoon.

A win for the hosts would make survival official but even a draw might be enough to do it after a campaign of great uncertainty under Carlos Corberan.

Only one win in eight and a lot of goals shipped at the wrong end have characterised that slump.

Coventry meanwhile, who came up from League One last season, made sure of their Championship status last week despite losing to Preston as other results went in their favour.

  8. Is Millers' time up?published at 14:42 British Summer Time 1 May 2021

Rotherham United v Blackburn (15:00 BST)

    Paul WarneImage source, PA Media

Just as one huge game passes for Rotherham, another comes along several days later.

Their relentless fixture schedule continues against Blackburn but the equation is the same for Paul Warne's side: Win and hope others slip up.

They are four points behind fourth-from-bottom Derby County and with a game in hand.

But should the result not go their way this afternoon and Derby find the one they need, the Millers' return to the second tier could be over after just one season back.

  9. Rams hope to end nervous timespublished at 14:39 British Summer Time 1 May 2021

Swansea City v Derby County (15:00 BST)

    RooneyImage source, PA Media

A tale of contrasting season fortunes as Swansea host Derby at the Liberty Stadium.

The Swans have already booked their play-off berth for a second season in a row and still have points to play for to guarantee a home second leg and the highest-possible finish.

Steve Cooper jas decided to rest and rotate a few players ahead of the play-offs though.

For Derby, the challenge is a very different one. A win for Wayne Rooney's side could guarantee their Championship status after an abysmal run of form.

Just one win in their past 13 has left them nervously looking over their shoulders in recent weeks while those in the drop zone have failed to reel them in.

There might also be the odd eyeball on the Derby bench on what's happening between Rotherham and Blackburn.

They'll certainly be plenty from a Sheffield Wednesday persuasion too on it now as they know just a draw for Derby will relegate them.

All over at Hillsborough and Sheffield Wednesday survive...for now.

A dire 90 minutes of football comes to an end with Nottingham Forest holding them to a point when they could have done with all three.

The Owls move up a place to 22nd place for now, but if 21st-placed Derby avoid defeat against Swansea later, Wednesday are down.

    No, is the answer.

Kadeem Harris fires his free-kick both high and wide. That's the closest Sheffield Wednesday have come to realistically taking the lead in this second half.

We're in the closing stages here and now would be a good time for Sheffield Wednesday to score.

However, it's Nottingham Forest who've got most of the ball as we head towards stoppage time.

It's brought into the box but the visitors are flagged offside.

Jordan Rhodes picks up the ball in space outside the Nottingham Forest box as the visitors fail to clear their lines.

He lets fly from long range but his first-time effort is well off target.
