There's not a lot between them now. Liverpool have got themselves into good areas. Manchester United have looked good on the counter but Liverpool have dominated the ball.

The goal has actually been awarded to Bruno Fernandes now. That means he has 44 goal involvements - bettered only by Lionel Messi, Robert Lewandowski and Cristiano Ronaldo in the big five European leagues since his Manchester United debut in February 2020.

Aston Villa

Aston Villa boss Dean Smith, speaking to BBC Sport: "At the end of the game we were [hanging on a bit]. I thought we had good control of the game in the first half. I think what will annoy myself and Carlo [Ancelotti] is that there were not too many good chances in the game."

On Jack Grealish's return: "It is really good to see, he has been training well but we have had to manage it. I had an agreement with the medical staff today, twisted their arm to get an extra five minutes out of him.

"We will see how he feels, we will be looking to get him a 90 minutes somewhere, Palace next he won't be ready for 90 minutes."

On Matty Cash injury: "It will probably put him out for the rest of the season. Disappointing for him."

On Emi Martinez's club clean sheet record: "It is a great credit to him. It is a great signing for us and we knew that at the start of the season. He will be the first as well to thank the team for protecting him as well and making big chances become comfortable saves for him but it has been a team effort."

Jurgen Klopp is out on the edge of his box instructing his players to move the ball quicker through midfield as Roberto Firmino is flagged offside for a run in behind.

Everton

Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti, speaking to BBC Sport: "It is a point. What can I say? Not satisfied for the result, satisfied for the performance. We could win but we have to take this point and try to win the next game. We have to try to win the home games, where we have had difficulty this season.

"Villa are a good team, to win here is not easy. I think our performance was the best that we can. We could probably do a bit better with the final pass or final shot but in general the performance was good."

Still confident of finishing in European places? "I am really positive. We have a great opportunity and we have to try to do our best. I said at the start of the season the European positions will be decided by the last game, I think they will be decided by the last game and we want to be there."

Georginio Wijnaldum is caught late by Scott McTominay in midfield. Roberto Firmino then does well to keep the ball following a short pass from Trent Alexander-Arnold but Andy Robertson's cross eventually flies just past the far post.

The perfect start for Manchester United. Liverpool have looked very shaky at the back so far!

Everton

Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti to Sky Sports: "We tried to do everything to win. We had a good second half. We did our best.

"We have three games [to try to qualify for Europe], we’re still in the fight. We have to try to win the last three games. I think we need nine points.

"The performance ws good. We were good defensively, we didn’t give them a lot of opportunities. We were better offensively. We had some opportunities to score goals.

"We put more energy in the second half."

Nat Phillips takes a heavy touch in midfield as he steps up and ends up blasting it out for a throw-in.

He grimaces and Jurgen Klopp purses his lips.

Aston Villa

Aston Villa boss Dean Smith to Sky Sports: "I thought we controlled the ball well in the first half without creating chances. The second half was a bit scrappy. It started as a basketball game but we never took the control we wanted. They had the later chances.

"JJ [Jacob Ramsey] coming on and Jack [Grealish] helped us. We looked like we could create something in final third. That was what was missing for us.

"Another clean sheet, we haven't had one for six or seven games. Never say die attitude from the players. They continued to show that and will do for last three games.

"We knew he [Emiliano Martinez] would be important for us. He's done really well. With Tom Heaton injured at the start of the season we needed someone. He's made it his number one jersey."

On Grealish: "The medical staff said [bring him on at minute] 75 but I twisted their arm to get a few more minutes out of him. I felt we were flat in the final third and needed a spark. He won't be ready to start at Crystal Palace."

On Matty Cash's injury: "Whether it's a recurrence I don't know. He felt his hamstring. That will probably rule him out for the rest of the season."

On Tyrone Mings' injury: "Him and Emi [Martinez] collided. He's a tough old cookie. He should be OK."

Nat Phillips plays it back to Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson. He tries to find Rhys Williams but completely fluffs the pass.

Edinson Cavani nips in but drags his shot wide with Alisson scrambling to get back into position.

What a chance! What a let off!

Man Utd deal with the set-piece and Fred does well to win a free-kick on the far side.

It comes over to Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who curls one into the box, but Edinson Cavani heads it wide.

Bruno Fernandes flicks it over to Luke Shaw on the left but he gives it away.

It's slipped through to Roberto Firmino by Trent Alexander Arnold. He tries to cut it back inside and there's appeals for a handball from Eric Bailly, who makes the block.

No says the referee, but Liverpool have a corner.

Beds!!!

The Manchester United players arrived early. Beds were brought to the stadium prior to their arrival to allow the players to rest in executive areas.

The Liverpool bus that was blocked in was NOT a decoy. It was on its way to pick up the players.

The club used its other two coaches to get the players to the ground thanks to an extensive police operation. Beyond that, there was no impact on them.
