Before the game, England and Northern Ireland players will conduct a moment of solidarity with those who have spoken out about harassment in the NWSL, Australia and Venezuela.

Earlier in the week, defender Demi Vance said NI would "come together in solidarity and support", and England captain Leah Williamson confirmed in yesterday's press conference that they would discuss any potential stand ahead of the match.

  3. Wiegman to wait on choosing permanent captainpublished at 16:59 British Summer Time 23 October 2021

England v Northern Ireland (17:15 BST)

England manager Sarina Wiegman says she is not yet ready to choose a permanent Lionesses captain.

Arsenal defender Leah Williamson captained the side in last month's World Cup qualifiers against Luxembourg and North Macedonia.

She will lead the side in the next two qualifiers - against Northern Ireland on Saturday and in Latvia on Tuesday.

When asked if she had made a decision on the captaincy going forward, Wiegman said: "I just need that time."

Williamson wore the armband for the first time in the absence of the injured Steph Houghton, who has captained the Lionesses since 2014.

England v Northern Ireland (17:15 BST)

It's a case of so far, so good for England. Two matches, two victories, 18 scored and none conceded.

Sarina Wiegman's team swatted aside North Macedonia in their opening Group D match and hit poor old Luxembourg for 10 at the next opportunity.

That's about as emphatic as it gets.

Northern Ireland, who will be happy to fly under the radar, are also on maximum points form their two outings.

Kenny Shiels' side easily beat Luxembourg 4-0 in their opener before another 4-0 win over Latvia at Windsor Park.

It's a good start for NI, however England are a much, much bigger proposition this evening.

  7. Stat attackpublished at 16:50 British Summer Time 23 October 2021

England v Northern Ireland (17:15 BST)

A couple of stats that are ominous for Northern Ireland.

Women's Super League players in the England squad: 23. In the Northern Ireland squad: Zero.

It's also been 19 years since England lost a home qualifier.

That's the size of the task ahead.

  9. Team news - Burrows starts for NIpublished at 16:44 British Summer Time 23 October 2021

England v Northern Ireland (17:15 BST)

    Northern Ireland

Kenny Shiels promised an attacking line-up, saying NI "won't behave like underdogs", and he has certainly delivered in that regard.

He's opting to play his favoured three players up front, with captain Marissa Callaghan leading the with Caragh Hamilton and Lauren Wade.

WSL players Rebecca Holloway and Simone Magill are big absentees, with Kelsie Burrows tasked with filling Holloway's shoes in a back three.

Holloway has been impressive since making her debut against England at St. George's earlier in the year and is a big loss.

It's brave, let's see if it pays off.

Northern Ireland: Burns, McKenna, McFadden, Nelson, Burrows, Vance, McCarron, Furness, Callaghan (capt), Wade, Hamilton.

Subs: Flaherty, Maddy-Clifford, McLaren, McGuinness, Caldwell, Rafferty, McDaniel, Wilson, Andrews, Beattie, Waitling.

Sarina Wiegman has gone for consistency, naming the same England side who were convincing winners in Luxembourg.

It means Manchester United's Mary Earps keeps her place in goal - a reward for her good performances in the WSL.

It's also the same back four who have started both of Wiegman's first two games in charge.

Ellen White, who starts up front for England, needs three goals to equal Kelly's Smith all-time goalscoring record.

  11. Team news - Parris starts for Englandpublished at 16:37 British Summer Time 23 October 2021

England v Northern Ireland (17:15 BST)

    England

Sarina Wiegman has named a strong side with no changes from the 10-0 victory over Luxembourg.

That means Leah Williamson captains the side from midfield alongside Ella Toone and Fran Kirby.

Nikita Parris gets the nod ahead of Beth Mead up front.

England XI: Earps, Daly, Bright, Greenwood, Stokes, Kirby, Williamson, Toone, Hemp, White, Parris.

Subs: MacIver, Hampton, Charles, Walsh, Stanway, Wubben-Moy, Mead, Staniforth, England, Scott, Russo, Carter.

  12. A dress rehearsal for the Eurospublished at 16:35 British Summer Time 23 October 2021

England v Northern Ireland (17:15 BST)

Today is a big occasion for both teams - but for very different reasons.

For the Lionesses, it is a return to the biggest stage in English football - their first time at Wembley since a record-breaking crowd watched their defeat to Germany in 2019.

It is also the perfect chance to regain lost momentum, rally supporters and build excitement for a home European Championship in the summer.

For Northern Ireland, it is one of the biggest tests they will face before their first major women's tournament at Euro 2022.

Just a month after playing in front of more than 4,000 fans at Windsor Park, can they upset the odds at Wembley in a dress rehearsal for what is to come in the summer?

  13. The homecomingpublished at 16:29 British Summer Time 23 October 2021

England v Northern Ireland (17:15 BST)

    Hellooooo Wembleyyy!

Sorry, always wanted to do that. Now that piece of self-indulgence is out of the way, let's concentrate on the football.

On paper, this should be a routine win for England and a comfortable three points as the Lionesses play their first competitive match at the new Wembley.

Little is expected of Northern Ireland, who made history by qualifying for Euro 2022 next summer - their first major tournament for the senior women's side.

However Kenny Shiels' side have little regard of reputations, and the NI boss has promised attacking intent and they aim to cause a huge upset.
