It might be a small ground but the locals have turned up in force to cheer their side. Austria are assured of at least a place in the play-offs for the World Cup but a win over England would really shake things up with one round of game to go.

Wiener Neustadt is about half an hour on the train from Vienna and while the city itself is lovely, this match is taking place on the outskirts in an industrial area.

There is an air strip across the road from the ground where small planes and helicopters are constantly landing and taking off. Sarina Wiegman and Millie Bright were drowned out on more than one occasion by the noise during the Lionesses' pre-match news conference yesterday.

That news conference, by the way, was held in a small marquee attached to the ground.

England's triumphant summer means interest is sky high. As well as the BBC, ITV and Sky Sports, there are journalists here from the Daily Telegraph, Times, Daily Mail, Guardian and Press Association - as well as one or two freelancers.

Meanwhile, Austria manager Irene Fuhrmann has been raising some valid concerns over the timing of this international window for women's teams, with it coming over a month after the Euros finished and before most domestic seasons have got going.

Fuhrmann called the situation "not ideal" and has called for Uefa to think about that.

The first women's international break of the season would normally come around late September but the dates for all three of the autumn windows (September, October and November) have been moved forward to avoid any clashes with the men's World Cup in Qatar.

The WSL season gets under way next weekend when Tottenham host Manchester United next Saturday.

  4. 'This is just the start'published at 16:18 British Summer Time 3 September 2022

Sarina Wiegman has stressed the importance of England not being "satisfied" after their Euros triumph as they prepare to return to action this weekend.

"When you're satisfied with what you're doing right now, you're lost because the game develops so much and every country is so eager to improve, and so are we.

"The players already said, this is just the start. This is just the beginning - a very good beginning by the way. But yes, I feel like even though on July 31 (the date of the Euros final), yes, we were partying, the players are already looking forward.

"We want to qualify for the World Cup, of course, and then we want to be successful there too, and that's what we're working on now. That means we have to improve and work hard every day to make individual improvements, but also as a team when we are together."

This is Alan and Lesley Whittam who have travelled to Wiener Neustadt from Penrith, Cumbria, to cheer on the Lionesses.

They made the decision to come out and support the team after England's Euro 2022 triumph.

Alan and Lesley were waiting with their England flags when the team arrived to train at the ground yesterday.

    You're quite right Neil.

Apparently the Press Association are reporting that only 28 of the tickets sold were bought by UK-based fans.

The previous meeting between the sides on 6 July, which was a 1-0 victory for England in the opening fixture of the European Championship, was at Old Trafford in front of a crowd of 68,871.

It feels a long way from Wembley and 87,192 on 31 July.

Stadion Wiener Neustadt has around 3,000 seats although thousands of heavy metal fans stood on the pitch to watch an Iron Maiden concert at the ground in July.

The Lionesses are staying in the centre of Wiener Neustadt about a 15 minute drive from the ground. Tennis player Dominic Thiem, the 2020 US Open singles champion, is from this area.

Will the Lionesses be serving up another win?

  8. Gunners duo startpublished at 16:09 British Summer Time 3 September 2022

    Austria v England (16:30 BST)

Austria make two changes from the side that lost 1-0 to England at Old Trafford on 6 July in the opening game of Euro 2022.

Two Arsenal players - keeper Manuela Zinsberger and defender Laura Wienroither - both start.

    Good afternoon everyone.

The party is over and England get back to work shortly when they face Austria in their Group D women's World Cup qualifier.

Thirty-four days after being crowned champions of Europe, the Lionesses need a point to give them a shot at even greater glory at the 2023 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
