The people have spoken. Craig Gordon should start in goals.

Right, next one for you. Leigh Griffiths - should he have been selected?

Not much form to speak of, but a brilliant finisher on his day. Was Steve Clarke right to leave him at home?

  2. Marshall or Gordon?published at 14:57 British Summer Time 19 May 2021

Interesting one, this. Who should start in goals for the first game against Czech Republic?

Play-off hero David Marshall would have been a shoo-in a few months ago, but a lack of games at Derby and a few mistakes in the World Cup qualifiers means it's not as clear as it once was.

Craig Gordon has been outstanding for Hearts. Of course, Rangers Jon McLaughlin is also in the squad, but probably won't be first choice given he isn't for his club.

Thumbs up for Marshall, thumbs down for Gordon...

The Scottish FA's performance school programme has taken plenty of stick over the years, and even been threatened with closure.

They can look at the Nathan Patterson and Billy Gilmour's inclusion in the Scotland squad with some satisfaction, since both came through that system.

  5. 'No real surprises' - Lambertpublished at 14:41 British Summer Time 19 May 2021

Former Scotland midfielder Paul Lambert, who was part of the last Scotland men's squad to play in a major finals in 1998, feels the centre of the pitch looks strong.

"I don't think there are any surprises," he said on BBC Radio Scotland.

"I think the continuity of the squad picks itself. The young lads have come in with experience in the squad already. Would they have been picked if there was only 23-man squad? I don't know. I think it's a really good squad though.

"It's got youth in there, lads that are hitting form at the right time and everything's looking very good for Scotland at the moment."

"Every time I've seen Billy Gilmour play for Chelsea he's done pretty well but I think it'll be hard to get in ahead of the likes of John McGinn and Scott McTominay. Scotland are very strong in the midfield area."

  6. You nailed it...published at 14:35 British Summer Time 19 May 2021

Leigh Griffiths is the ONLY player you, the intelligent BBC Sport audience, chose to make up your 26-man squad (in which we assumed 15 fairly certain picks for you) who Steve Clarke did not actually select. Greg Taylor is in instead.

Everyone else on the list made it. Either a) You are all brilliant football coaches. Or b) The squad isn't much of a surprise.

Let's go with the former, eh?

Few interesting nuggets in that Steve Clarke news conference...

    - Scott McTominay will be used in midfield, with the head coach having to change how the side plays in that area

-There is no official standby list

    - Andrew Considine and Liam Palmer were the ones who received phone calls breaking the bad news

  8. 'Players can become legends'published at 14:21 British Summer Time 19 May 2021

"It's always important to try and get as far as we can," the Scotland head coach continues.

"I think the group is growing in stature the more caps they get. Hopefully we can go there and upset a few teams.

"We're going there to get out the group. Like I said before, the lads can become legends."

  9. Clarke on Gauld's ommissionpublished at 14:15 British Summer Time 19 May 2021

Scotland head coach Steve Clarke: "Anybody who thought they could be in the original squad, there's still matches to be played. So keep yourself fit and be ready.

"I haven't done an official standby list, but I have spoken to a few players.

"Because of the restrictions it was difficult to get to Portugal to watch Ryan. Fortunately you can see everything on TV. Good player, had a good season even though his team have struggled.

"But when you look at the area of the squad he's trying to get into, attacking midfield, you've got Stuart Armstrong, John McGinn. It was always going to be tough and unfortunately for Ryan he's missed out."

Asked if he had a sense of relief about finally getting his final squad on paper, Clarke said: "It meant I could throw away the 249 other bits of paper. It meant my room was a bit tidier."

Something refreshing about the old school paper approach. Thought it might be the spreadsheet era...

  11. 'Everyone on a level footing' - Clarkepublished at 14:07 British Summer Time 19 May 2021

"I'm really happy with the squad and the balance we've got," the Scotland head coach Steve Clarke says at his media conference.

On David Turnbull, Billy Gilmour, and Nathan Patterson: "I think they all add something to the squad. Everyone goes to the training camp in Spain on a level footing with the chance to break into the team for the Euros.

"This time it was only two difficult phone calls - to Andy Considine and Liam Palmer.

"With the loss of Ryan Jack and Kenny McLean, two key midfielders, we might have to tweak what we do a little bit."

A Scotland squad has been announced and former Hearts and Southampton goalkeeper Antti Niemi is trending on Twitter.

Apparently, he is now Finnished, likely to the surprise of one Jambos fan.

Anyone else slightly upset that Andy Considine, the Boogie man, isn't included?

Would've been great value for patter alone.

Don't go back to work yet. We're live streaming Steve Clarke's media conference in around 15 minutes' time.

Should be interesting to hear his thoughts on the uncapped trio in particular.

Is this Euros caper all beginning to feel a little bit real for everyone else now, too? Well, have a gander at this and it might just put you over the edge...

  17. Why Patterson?published at 13:36 British Summer Time 19 May 2021

Rangers' 19-year-old right-back Nathan Patterson is perhaps the biggest surprise, purely down to the fact he has played so few first-team games.

He covered for captain James Tavernier when he was out injured earlier this year, and he impressed, making 14 appearances and scoring twice.

He looks like a real prospect, given his power and pace, as well as his technical ability.

He looks to be one who will be playing for Scotland for years to come. The fact he has beaten the more experienced Liam Palmer to selection would suggest Steve Clarke thinks so too.

  18. Turnbull's casepublished at 13:30 British Summer Time 19 May 2021

So, why has Steve Clarke picked uncapped David Turnbull?

After initially struggling to break into the Celtic team at the start of the season, the midfielder has been one of the club's best players in a poor season.

His technique is outstanding, with an excellent passing range to boot, as well as being a good set-piece taker.

He's not the most mobile midfielder in the country, but he is one of the most gifted.

David McGregor: Never mind surprise inclusion there is a case for them to start. Particularly Patterson who has shown he can do it in European competitions. Depending on shape there aren't 3 CMs better than Gilmour either.

  20. 'Important to look through the ranks' - Clarkepublished at 13:17 British Summer Time 19 May 2021

Scotland head coach Steve Clarke has been giving his thoughts on his squad to the SFA's media team.

"It's difficult when you come to a major tournament and you get ruled out with injury [Ryan Jack and Kenny McLean], it's always disappointing not to be involved. What it means is that there's opportunities for others.

"It's always important to look down and see what's coming through the ranks. The Scotland U21s have done well in recent campaigns, took the qualification to the last game of the section and were unlucky not to qualify.

"When you've got the talent coming through and you've got the opportunity with players injured and with three places bigger it's a chance to bring the young boys in. I've tried to remain true to the spirit of the squad I've had before, trying to keep the core and the nucleus we had together.

"It's the most important thing we're going to be together for the best part of five hopefully six, seven weeks. You know what it's like the more time you spend together the more fraught it can be in a household!"
