  1. Liverpool pursuing deal for RB Leipzig defender Konatepublished at 15:53 British Summer Time 25 May 2021

Before we hear from Manchester United, here's a transfer update on Liverpool, who are pursuing a deal for RB Leipzig defender Ibrahima Konate as they look set to turn down the chance to sign Ozan Kabak permanently.

Konate, 22, is part of France's squad for the Uefa European Under-21 Championship, which starts on 31 May. He reportedly has a buyout clause of about £34m.

The Reds had an option to turn Kabak's loan from Schalke into a permanent move but, after they told him of their plans, he is speaking to other clubs.

The deal which brought Turkey international Kabak to Anfield in January included an option to buy him for £18m, with add-on clauses.

  3. 'We have the opportunity to bring the country out of the gloom'published at 15:41 British Summer Time 25 May 2021

And finally from the England boss, Gareth Southgate said: "It's exciting to be leading a team into a European Championship, a team that has the opportunity to bring the country out of the gloom of the last few months.

"To have fans back in stadiums has already been exciting to see at the end of the league season and the latter stages of the cup competitions, so we're really looking forward to the whole experience."

  4. 'This is where you really make your reputation, your legacy'published at 15:36 British Summer Time 25 May 2021

Back to Gareth Southgate for a moment, and the England boss challenged his players to make a name for themselves this summer.

"I think there's a great challenge for all of our players," he said. "We have some players that should be close to their prime and a lot of young players that everybody's very excited about, and rightly so.

"But these stages - the big games, the big moments - are where you really make your reputation, your legacy, and you stamp your name on football history. That's what makes it so exciting for players to be involved in.

"When you think of the big players of the past, a lot of those moments were in an international shirt. That's the opportunity they have now. To be big players we have to step up in those moments and if we want to be a successful team we have to live with that bit of pressure that comes with expectation."

They will be doing their main news conference shortly. Solskjaer looks quite relaxed.

A notable day for Sheffield United academy, with 4 alumni - Ramsdale, Walker, Maguire and Calvert-Lewin - in the squad. And that’s without even mentioning that Coady and Henderson were helped on their way by breakthrough loan spells with the Blades.

  7. 'Injury so close to tournament is heart-breaking for Pope'published at 15:22 British Summer Time 25 May 2021

On Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope missing out, Southgate added: "For Nick, it's heart-breaking to get an injury so close to a major tournament. He's been a fantastic member of our squad. He's a totally unselfish guy. In Russia [2018 World Cup], he spent hour after hour throwing himself around at penalties, which was as important for our success in the shootout as the guys that took them frankly.

"I'm really disappointed for him but it opens up opportunities for others. Sam Johnstone and Aaron Ramsdale have finished the season well with their clubs, Dean Henderson is in that battle for the number one spot at Manchester United at the moment, and Jordan's Pickford finished the season really strongly. Since coming back from his injury, his focus and calmness in goal has really stood out, so I'm really pleased with his form."

I have to admit, I have never seen the match officials put through their paces in a final training session before a major game.

But French referee Clement Turpin and his team have been on the pitch for a workout that included whistles being blown. It is true - I heard it.

  9. 'He wanted everything yesterday' - keeper's rise to England squadpublished at 15:05 British Summer Time 25 May 2021

Speaking to former colleagues and coaches of Dean Henderson, one word comes up over and over again: confidence. Throughout his loan spells, from Stockport County to Sheffield United, he never doubted he was destined to play at the highest level.

The self-belief needed to be a top goalkeeper typically comes with experience, but the Manchester United and England man relished defying expectations. His first taste of senior football was with Stockport in the National League North as a little-known 18-year-old.

"He fitted in really well. He came across as a confident goalkeeper without being arrogant. He fully believed in his own ability," remembers John Marsden, who was a forward at Stockport at the time. "From very early on, he was always saying he would one day be Manchester United's first-choice goalkeeper."

Telling a dressing room full of established players he would follow in the footsteps of legends like Peter Schmeichel and Edwin van der Sar was a bold strategy. Henderson's irrepressible ambition risked alienating his new team-mates, but they admired him for it.

"It showed the desire he had to progress and achieve his dream," adds Marsden. "We liked the attitude on him. He didn't come across as cocky with it. He just had whole-hearted belief in himself."

  10. No Maguire at Man Utd pre-match news conferencepublished at 15:00 British Summer Time 25 May 2021

Villarreal v Man Utd (Wed, 20:00 BST)

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport in Gdansk

Manchester United skipper Harry Maguire sits out their pre-match news conference in just under an hour.

Instead, Bruno Fernandes and Luke Shaw will accompany manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the clearest sign yet that Maguire is not going to win his battle to recover from his ankle injury in time.

  11. 'Kane has one goal with us - that's to win a European Championship'published at 14:55 British Summer Time 25 May 2021

On the speculation surrounding the club future of England captain Harry Kane, Southgate said: "I don't ever need to have a conversation with Harry Kane regarding focus or professionalism. He has one goal this summer with us and that's to win a European Championship.

"I know how important that is to him at this moment in time. What's going on at his club is a matter for him and Tottenham. He's made some statement in the last few days and, in many respects, that's out of the way now.

"Talking across the board, I think it's very unlikely that transfer deals will be done while we're away. I think that's different when we have our [training] camps in September. Very often we're on that deadline moment and every now and then we've had to facilitate a medical or a meeting between a player and a manager."

  12. 'We've got too many questions marks as I sit here today'published at 14:47 British Summer Time 25 May 2021

Southgate was asked about Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold, who was left out of the previous England squad in March, being one of four right-backs.

"You're looking at four right-backs, I just see four good footballers," he said.

"Kieran Trippier can play at left-back. Alexander-Arnold can play at wing-back, I think he can play midfield. I've seen Reece James play on the right side of a back three, at wing-back and as a midfielder. in a tournament, those flexible players who can fulfil different roles will be hugely important.

"We don't know how the next few weeks will play out in terms of availability and injuries, what our best system will be with the players we've got available. We've got too many questions marks as I sit here today, but that will become clearer. We know what we'd like to do, but we've got contingencies in place."

Get Involved - Konsa & Tomori miss outpublished at 14:43 British Summer Time 25 May 2021

#bbcfootball or text 81111 (UK only)

When is Ezri Konsa going to be finally recognised as one of England's top 4 centre backs? Bloke is a rock and a lot better than Coady, Mings and Dier!

    Josh, Reading

Considering the number of defenders included in this enlarged squad, I think that Tomori has been unlucky to miss out based on his form for Milan.

    Mike

For me, Tomori has to be on the plane, he now has more experience playing at the top level than players like Konsa and White. Seems he might be overlooked solely due to him not playing in England, would be a big miss.

    Max, London

  14. 'It should be a fantastic experience for White & Godfrey'published at 14:37 British Summer Time 25 May 2021

On uncapped duo Ben White and Ben Godfrey, Southgate added: "They are both exciting young defenders. There are others we have been looking at that we really like - Ezri Konsa has had a good season at Aston Villa and Fikayo Tomori has done well [on loan from Chelsea] at Milan.

"These two are flexible, they play in different roles, and this is a great opportunity for us to get to know them a bit better and for them to work with the team. I think it works for everybody. There is no way of knowing how long they will be with us at this stage but it should be a fantastic experience for all of them."

  15. 'There's a risk with taking less than 26 players'published at 14:33 British Summer Time 25 May 2021

On the Euro 2020 squads being expanded from 23 to 26, Southgate added: "I'm still not a fan of 26. Like [Spain coach] Luis Enrique said, you want everybody to feel there or thereabouts. If everybody's available for each match, we could end up with people not even on the bench.

"That's not a great team dynamic but there's a risk with not taking 26, with the injury doubts and not knowing what happens with Covid."

Enrique only named a 24-man squad for Spain.

  16. 'There's an investment there with White'published at 14:23 British Summer Time 25 May 2021

On selecting Ben White ahead of fellow Brighton defender Lewis Dunk, 29, who was capped by Southgate in 2018, the England boss added: "Ben's a younger player (23) so there's a bit of an investment for the future there. We've tracked him since he was on loan at Leeds. We've seen him play in midfield, he's comfortable on the ball and has pace.

"It's still early for centre-backs like Ben White, Ben Godfrey and Fikayo Tomori - they tend to mature later. But they're getting good experience at a young age and we think it's a good opportunity for them to come and work with us."

Get Involved - White not even Brighton's best centre-backpublished at 14:20 British Summer Time 25 May 2021

#bbcfootball or text 81111 (UK only)

Ask any Brighton fan this season and they'd say Ben White has been our third-best English centre-back. Lewis Dunk been snubbed again. Delighted for Ben but would love to have seen Dunk in the team to justify another brilliant season. No chance White makes the 26, but good for him to get some experience before he inevitably leaves us for one of the big boys.

  18. Jones joining England coaching staffpublished at 14:17 British Summer Time 25 May 2021

On whether Southgate will replace Allan Russell after England's striker coach left his role over a road traffic accident involving his brother.

"We won't have a like-for-like replacement in that specific area, but I'm disappointed for Allan and for us that that situation occurred," said the England boss.

"We're really pleased to bring in Graeme Jones, who's been working with Newcastle. I've known him for a while and he's got fantastic tournament experience from working with Belgium and Roberto Martinez. I think it gives us a really strong coaching team and we're looking forward to that challenge."

  19. Injury concerns 'are why more time would help us'published at 14:12 British Summer Time 25 May 2021

On Harry Maguire's fitness, Southgate said: "From a club perspective, Manchester United have got a huge final tomorrow so it hasn't been easy getting information, and we understand that. We'll know more in the next few days.

"Kalvin Phillips was injured in the 93rd minute on Sunday so we'll know more on the severity of that in the next few days too. These are the realities we've had to cope with in the last few days, and why we felt having more time would help us."

  20. 'I just don't think Dier's season has been strong enough'published at 14:09 British Summer Time 25 May 2021

On leaving out Tottenham's utility man Eric Dier, Southgate added: "He's a man who I have tremendous respect for and he's been a key player on some of our biggest nights. Unfortunately, I just don't think his season's been strong enough to be in the squad.

"That's a difficult call because I know how much he brings to the group, and when you're away at a tournament, those players who put the team first are critical. That wasn't an easy conversation but he's an outstanding professional and he took the news in a really professional way."
