  1. 'We have 12 players still to play in European finals'published at 14:03 British Summer Time 25 May 2021

Asked why he named 33 players today rather than 30, or his final 26, England coach Gareth Southgate said: "I think our situation is more complicated than any other country at the moment. We have known for a while that we have of this 33, 12 players still to play in European finals this week so we were always going to need some additional players for the first part of the [training] camp.

"Add to that a number of injuries...so we felt that more time is going to help us make better decisions.

"Our preference was to name the 26, but we have not got an ideal hand of cards - a lot of unknowns. Information and evidence are very important and we will have a lot more in the next seven days."

I find it baffling that Aaron Wan-Bissaka isn’t included amongst England’s defenders. He’s arguably the best defender of the lot. Yes, there are plenty of right-backs, and, yes, he isn’t the best going forward. But Southgate likes playing a back 3, which he could more than do, alongside Maguire & Stones. Then you can have TAA/Trippier as the right wing-back, meaning they can focus on what they do best, which is going forward.

Can someone please explain why Jordan Henderson is the squad? So many better options who can actually pass in directions other than sideways and backwards! Also, where is Wan-Bissaka?

  7. England schedulepublished at 13:42 British Summer Time 25 May 2021

    All kick-off times BST

Just a reminder that Gareth Southgate will have to whittle his 33-man squad down to 26 next Tuesday, a day before England play their first warm-up game against Austria (20:00).

The Three Lions then play Romania (6 June, 17:00), with both games taking playing at Middlesbrough's Riverside Stadium.

Get Involved - Still no Bamfordpublished at 13:34 British Summer Time 25 May 2021

#bbcfootball or text 81111 (UK only)

England play with one central striker, so Kane, C-Lewin & Watkins are the preference, with wide players either side, so no surprise Bamford or Ings aren't picked, it's not 4-4-2 we play.

  9. Maguire 'must train' today to play in Europa League finalpublished at 13:33 British Summer Time 25 May 2021

Villarreal v Man Utd (Wed, 20:00 BST)

    Manchester United

While Nick Pope has been left out, Harry Maguire remains in the England squad despite being doubtful for Wednesday's Europa League final.

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said his captain will need to train today if he is to play. Maguire has missed United's past four league games after suffering ligament damage against Aston Villa on 9 May.

The 28-year-old centre-back has played 54 games for United this season but Solskjaer says he is still "a bit away" from being ready to face Villarreal.

"He doesn't look great," said Solskjaer after Sunday's 2-1 victory over Wolves. "He has to train on Tuesday when we are over there, so don't expect him to be ready."

Once more England picking names over performance, what more does a 17-goal and 7-assist Patrick Bamford have to do? He was 2nd highest scoring English striker. Yet he still gets overlooked in favour of Mason Greenwood, Ollie Watkins and Calvert-Lewin. No wonder England don't win anything.

  11. Who else missed out?published at 13:25 British Summer Time 25 May 2021

So let's have a recap of some of the names who've missed out, besides Leeds striker Patrick Bamford.

There's Tottenham's utility man Eric Dier, Leicester midfielder James Maddison, Southampton striker Danny Ings and Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope, who would have had to recover from knee surgery in time.

Get Involved - Alexander-Arnold to miss out on final squad?published at 13:21 British Summer Time 25 May 2021

#bbcfootball or text 81111 (UK only)

Even in an enlarged squad of 26 there can't be room for 4 Right-backs. One of TTA, James, Walker or Trippier will miss out. I'm sure most people would sacrifice Trippier but I'm not so sure Southgate will as he's clearly a player he trusts. It will be a very big decision for him to make and I still think TTA might be the one to miss out.

  16. Lingard & Saka among midfielderspublished at 13:12 British Summer Time 25 May 2021

Had a moment of panic there as England have only seven players listed in midfield. But here are the men that most of us would consider as midfielders.

Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold has made it onto Gareth Southgate's provisional squad for Euro 2020.

There's actually 33 names on it, and uncapped quartet Sam Johnstone, Aaron Ramsdale, Ben White and Ben Godfrey have also made the cut... but there is still no place for Leeds striker Patrick Bamford.
