Robertlepongeauthor: I'll be watching in the bar in the French village where I live, with all my French friends. I've been giving them all pelters since the final whistle last night and will expect exactly the same if we lose, but am confident we'll win in 90 minutes tonight.

There is a lot of respect in Germany for the England side but obviously they hope their team will turn up like it did against Portugal in the group stage when they won 4-2. They don't want to see a repeat of the Hungary performance in the last game.

Some wise words from a footballing legend after France's Euro 2020 exit. Kylian Mbappe's penalty was saved in the shootout as Switzerland produced one of the greatest shocks in the European Championship.

Manchester City have agreed a one-year contract extension with club skipper Fernandinho.

The 36-year-old joined City in 2013, since when he has won four Premier League titles and six EFL Cups.

Fernandinho was part of the City side beaten in the Champions League final by Chelsea in May.

"In my head and my mind, the job is not done yet," he said.

“And so that's why I decided to stay here another year and try to help the team and the club to achieve the goals that they're looking for."

Steve Tervet: On holiday in Queensland, three-day lockdown just announced, no plans for tomorrow so the whole family - including our six-year-old daughter - will be getting a 1.45am alarm call for the big one. Come on England!

Jason Lack: Heading to a church in Belgium full of Germans! For an evening of friendly banter, beer and Bratties.

Paul: How will I watch the game? Mostly from behind the settee or through my fingers. Let’s hope it’s at least 20% entertaining as last nights matches.

Get me to that church, Jason...

James Warren: England can beat Germany, they need to ensure they do three things. They need to play as England, NOT try to play Germany in the style of Germany. Need to step up a gear and they need to hold onto the lead (which they will get early on). Don’t fear them!

Paul A: My fear for the England team tonight 3 CB, 2FB, 2CDM, Foden, Mount and Kane alone up front. My hope (but not going to happen) Conv back 4, Philips, Mount, Bellingham, then Grealish, Sancho and Kane, with Grealish and Sancho free to roam across the 10/11/7 roles.

Turin 1990. Wembley 1996. England's bid for World Cup and European Championship glory have been peppered by penalty shootout heartbreak at the hands of Germany.

So of course Gareth Southgate's side have been practicing penalties now Euro 2020 has reached the sudden death knockout stage.

"I'm hoping none of the games go to penalties because it's one of the scariest things in football," Phil Foden tells BBC Sport.

"Yeah, if I'm on the pitch, I'm more than willing to take one."

Asked about whether Southgate has spoken about his penalty miss during the Euro 96 semi-final shootout with Germany at Wembley, Foden added: "He's not going to bring that up, is he?"

  16. Will Kane fire against Germany?published at 09:22 British Summer Time 29 June 2021

There are the doubts that still surround this England team and cast a cloud over their hopes.

Harry Kane is still struggling for that elusive first goal of the tournament and England will need their world-class striker to fire in a manner that will instantly elevate their level of threat. Gareth Southgate will hope its arrival is imminent.

England are struggling to finish teams off, or even trouble them in the case of Scotland.

All this will be noted by Southgate and England, as Euro 2020 gets even more serious and the stakes get even higher.
