    Archive: England v Germany - Euro 1996

England have nothing to fear from Germany in their Euro 2020 last-16 tie - unless it goes to penalties, says Germany legend Lothar Matthaus.

Matthaus was captain of West Germany when they beat England on penalties in the 1990 World Cup semi-final, with the Three Lions again losing on spot-kicks to Germany in the last four of Euro 96.

"England have a chance to win, but not with penalties," Matthaus said.

"Germany are always very good in penalties. It's a little bit of a joke between the Germans and the English.

"If we have to go to a penalty shootout I think Germany is the favourite because then you start to think about what's happened in the last 30, 40 years, Euro 96 and other penalty shootouts.

"This is a lot of pressure for the English players - they read the newspapers and they know the stories about penalties. England have the chance to win the game in 90 minutes or 120 minutes but when you go to a penalty shootout I think Germany is the favourite."

Defender Harry Maguire is so impressed by the device that helped him to get fit for tonight's last-16 tie that he has bought a bit of the company.

There were fears Maguire would miss Euro 2020 completely with an ankle injury he suffered on Manchester United duty at the beginning of May.

But Maguire returned for the win over the Czech Republic last Tuesday and is expected to feature against Germany at Wembley this evening.

He credits the ProMOTION EV1 device, which Maguire says provided 'cold, heat and compression functions' to his ankle during periods when he wasn't being treated by medical staff.

Wayne Rooney steered Maguire towards the equipment and now the 28-year-old has decided to invest in Swellaway Limited, who have developed the device.

"Promotion EV1 improved the timescale of my recovery from injury, 100%," said Maguire.

Rumours persist in Turkey that Fenerbahce are trying to persuade Nuno Espirito Santo to be their next manager.

Nuno is also in the running for the Spurs job and a couple of sources have told me the Fener link is not true.

It is not their fault but it does add to the uncertainty around the Tottenham situation.

They are due to start pre-season training next week. Their first friendly is in two-and-a-half weeks against Leyton Orient.

    Croatia 3-5 Spain (aet)

Spain defender Cesar Azpilicueta: "Boy, we had to suffer there. It's been a few tournaments since we went through a knockout match. But today we 'broke the ice' against the World Cup runners-up. It wasn't great to be scored against twice late in normal time, but we were the better team in extra time and we deserve to go through."
