Good possession from Arsenal there, good deliveries, overloading in good areas. Little flicks and tricks. Wonderful little wedge form Kieran Tierney but that just wasn't to be.

    Brentford 1-0 Arsenal

Arsenal are looking a bit sharper. Nicolas Pepe pounces on a loose clearance and finds Kieran Tierney.

His cross is over Emile Smith Rowe but he keeps going, plays a smart one-two with Pepe and almost gets a shot away. It's hoofed clear just in time.

Arsenal are going the same way as Blackburn. The rot has set in and nothing is being done to arrest the slide. They are getting worse by the season and falling further and further behind the big boys. No club is too big to go down, just ask Leeds and Forest fans.

Let's face it they couldn't get much worse. Arsenal are finally driving at the Brentford defence and giving keeper David Raya some work. Not before time.

Emile Smith Rowe has been comfortably Arsenal's best player.

He shows his quality here with a superb turn in the middle and he sprints through.

He gets into the box and has a shot but it's straight at the keeper. What a chance!

Brentford don't want to create that lull, they want to keep the pressure on and the tempo up. It's been good from Brentford - we're still seeing Arsenal passing the ball and moving it around but they don't look very confident. There's no real urgency.

    That's better from Arsenal.

They are able to bypass the press and Emile Smith Rowe blocks a clearance on the right.

Nicolas Pepe switches it across to the left, via Ben White.

Brentford are pressing high again. Calum Chambers loses it but gets lucky when he wins a throw-in.

Emile Smith Rowe immediately takes a hold of it, finds Granit Xhaka, who tees up Kieran Tierney but his low, drilled cross is straight at the keeper.

From kick-off, David Raya launches it long for Ivan Toney and Brentford's Ethan Pinnock has a chance to put in another long throw-in.

It's won by a Brentford player but it's comfortably in Bernd Leno's arms a few seconds later.

Arsenal are winless in each of their last 15 Premier League matches in which they were trailing at half-time (W0-D4-L11).

The last time the Gunners managed to turn a half-time deficit into a win, was at West Ham United on 9 December 2019.

We've seen some good movement from Arsenal, some nice football, getting wide and high - but it's the pace of it and that's what needs to be lifted.

You can play in front of a side all day long but I want to see the tempo increase, Arsenal started by playing the ball long because they were under a bit of pressure but now they've started to take more risks in front of goal but the pace is down. Yes, they're missing players but there are still enough players to do better than what they are doing.

  20. 'A deserved first half lead'published at 20:51 British Summer Time 13 August 2021

    Brentford 1-0 Arsenal

    Michael Brown
Former Man City midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

Arsenal tried to get the possession and get moving Brentford were a bit nervous, which you'd expect at the start. They got into the game, more passing more bravery they turned the tempo up.

Finally after them hitting the post it went out to the left hand side and there was Sergi Canos with a wonderful strike. It really lifted the stadium - probably a deserved first-half lead.
