  2. 'We made a nightmare start'published at 18:34 British Summer Time 14 August 2021

    Burnley 1-2 Brighton

    Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton manager Graham Potter speaking to BBC Sport: "We got off to a nightmare start. It's the last thing you want when the crowd is back and you're the away team.

"You need some luck, which we had, and it was important that it was 1-0 at half-time. The second half was much better, we were much more like ourselves. I'm delighted for the three points."

On his substitutions: "The players make the decisions. Credit to Adam Lallana, Jakub Moder, Alexis Mac Allister. They came on and adapted. It's never easy here and we had to fight for it.

"We're all adapting to the crowd, as soon as you go a goal down it's a raucous atmosphere. It was great for the boys to experience that and deal with it. We had luck which you need but I thought we were well worth the two goals in the end and that was enough for the three points."

On Burnley's opener: "It looked a push [by James Tarkowski on Neal Maupay], you can see clearly that it is but if the referee doesn't give it he doesn't give it. It is what it is.

"When I consider our pre-season and the challenges we've had, it's been really challenging. The first half was probably a reflection of that and we grew into it. To come here and get the three points on the opening day is fantastic for us."

  6. 'We come away disappointed'published at 18:27 British Summer Time 14 August 2021

    Burnley 1-2 Brighton

    Burnley

Burnley manager Sean Dyche speaking to BBC Sport: "When you make the chances we did, the quality of them and hitting the woodwork twice, there's that little bit of psychology to it - 'Is it not going to be our day?' We come away disappointed.

"We had a strong pre-season, the energy and quality has been good. We created a lot of good chances today but as we know the hardest thing in the game is scoring goals. It is good that we are creating chances but we have to take them.

"I feel for Nick Pope today, he's hardly had a save to make but he had to pick the ball out of the net twice.

"We upset our own rhythm. We didn't get up the pitch quick enough That was our doing, it was nothing tactical.

"Fans don't actually win the game for you they just help you win the game. The performance wins the game. A lot of our performance was right today."
