    Brighton 2-0 Watford

Brighton snuff out a Watford counter and then set about keeping the ball - they knock it around patiently before Leandro Trossard tries a sliding through ball that is cut out. He gets the chance to have a crack himself moments later, but blazes high and wide.

  3. CLOSE!published at 52 mins

    Brighton 2-0 Watford

Yves Bissouma is such a tidy player. Always an option, good feet in tight areas, and breaks up play so well too. He gets Brighton moving forward from inside their own half and it's a slick move from the hosts that eventually falls to Aaron Connolly.

He has to bury it, but fires wide from eight yards out! What a chance for the substitute. That should have been game over.

    Brighton 2-0 Watford

Ismaila Sarr gets the run on the Brighton backline again but can't engineer enough pace on his header to take it beyond Robert Sanchez. Watford looking a lot more lively since the break.

The players are heading back out for the second half. Goalscorer Neal Maupay, who went down clutching his shoulder, looks set to be replaced.

  10. 'We need the big characters like Klopp to get behind the new way of refereeing'published at 18:31 British Summer Time 21 August 2021

    Jermaine Jenas
Former England midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

If anything we had gone too far the other way with constant whistle blowing for VAR or for fouls and we forgot that end-to-end game of football that is the Premier League - it's been a welcome addition to me.

Jurgen Klopp is the first person I've heard saying he wants it to go back to how it was - which is disappointing. The referees have taken so much criticism in the past couple of years for the way that the game has gone with VAR and the way they referee the game and they've reacted in the right way I think. We need the big characters like Klopp to get behind it - but he obviously felt today was too physical a game for his two centre-halves and that's his opinion.

  11. 'Brilliant to have fans back'published at 18:30 British Summer Time 21 August 2021

    FT: Aston Villa 2-0 Newcastle

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa boss Dean Smith tells BBC Match of the Day: "It was an OK performance but a much better result after last week. You have to battle for the first win and we did that today.

"We just lacked intensity last week, I called it an international friendly but you cannot do that in front of 42,000 at Villa Park.

"It is brilliant to have the fans back and they have waited 18 months to get back, it was great to give them the three points to savour.

"We have seen Danny Ings do it against us so it is good he is an Aston Villa player now. Anwar El Ghazi has scored his last six now so Ings is out second penalty taker if he is on the pitch.

  12. 'We feel aggrieved today'published at 18:27 British Summer Time 21 August 2021

    FT: Aston Villa 2-0 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Steve Bruce, talking to BBC Match of the Day: "Not going for us is it? We lost a game last week with a big talking point and today we feel aggrieved too. The same official is involved, last week we were crying out for the referee to have a look at the monitor, he didn't and today he did.

"I thought VAR was for clean and obvious. The penalty for us, there were no lines drawn last week but there were this week, why? We are still talking about VAR.

"We had a decent start and a big chance but there were small margins between the teams, they got the big, key decisions at the right times.

"It is always going to be difficult, we had sufficient chances, I cannot remember either goalkeeper making a save but we were a threat and did not take our chances especially Callum Wilson. Danny Ings scored a great bicycle kick but there was nothing in it."

    Martin Keown
Former England defender on BBC Final Score

Norwich were there for the taking today and City swarmed them for 90 minutes.

It was Grealish pulling the strings on the left side.

Everything is working well again for City, overnight, they're now back in top gear.

  14. 'All of us have to learn from Gabriel Jesus'published at 18:23 British Summer Time 21 August 2021

    FT: Man City 5-0 Norwich

    Manchester City

Man City boss Pep Guardiola speaking to BBC Match of the Day about Gabriel Jesus, who set up three of City's five goals: “If one person deserves respect and prizes and everything, it is him, because he never complains. It is one of the reasons why when you wake up in the morning, you go to work, it is to see this type of player, this type of human being. His mom and dad have to be so proud to have a person like him.

“He can play as a striker, he can play left, he can play right – always what the team needs. He can play 10 minutes from the bench and he will play the best 10 minutes he can play. He is fantastic and all of us have to learn from him and I’m more than satisfied he was nominated man of the match.

“One week ago, we are not contenders to win the Premier League. Now we are scary! Listen, we are the same team except for Sergio (Aguero) who went to Barcelona, and Jack (Grealish) coming in. We are the same guys and the same team we were last season – and last season was exceptional.

“All we have to do is what we did today – everyone runs, they know the tough competition there is on the bench so everyone has to be ready.

“Today was a result the consequence of the performance and normally this happens. We played really good.

“I don’t like the players moving too much – I prefer the ball goes where the players are, this is the positional game and we insist every day on that. Everyone today, the full-backs, the central defenders, everyone was in his position."

  15. 'Four times we conceded the same goal'published at 18:22 British Summer Time 21 August 2021

    FT: Man City 5-0 Norwich

    Norwich City

Norwich boss Daniel Farke speaking to BBC Match of the Day: “To play the first game against Liverpool, with Liverpool having a point to prove and today at the Etihad against Man City with a point to prove, the first time after they won the title and the first time in nearly two years in front of their own fans, it was from the beginning a huge task.

“I am disappointed with the way we conceded the goals because four times we conceded more or less the same goal, the winger at the back of my left full-back. More or less we had prepared for that move from City the whole week because they always play this.

“Of course they have unbelievable quality but we also have to fulfill our work with more quality – that’s still not a guarantee that we would have won this game but I’m disappointed with the way we conceded the goals.”

  16. 'Today was a positive performance'published at 18:20 British Summer Time 21 August 2021

    FT: Crystal Palace 0-0 Brentford

    Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace boss Patrick Vieira, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: “I didn’t have any doubt about the way we were going to improve and play better than we did against Chelsea. I’m pleased with the attitude the players show every day in training, and today was a positive performance. Of course there is frustration because we wanted to win the game, we wanted to score goals. But I think we played in a way that wanted to go forward and score those goals and we didn’t find a way. So this was a positive performance and it is important to build up from it."

On Conor Gallagher: "His energy, the runs he made, the pressure he put on the opposition was fantastic. We needed that kind of energy and it is important to build up from that and try to improve our decision-making in the last 30 yards and at the same time have more bodies inside the box, to allow ourselves more chances of scoring goals."

On the atmosphere: "It was all that I was expecting. I’ve heard a lot about the fans and I’ve been here watching games. And we are disappointed because we wanted to give them the three points today. They were fantastic and supported us through the game after going through a difficult period. They were behind the team and that is really good for the rest of the season.”

  17. 'It's like having an extra man'published at 18:19 British Summer Time 21 August 2021

    FT: Leeds 2-2 Everton

    Leeds United

Leeds' Kalvin Phillips speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "It's been amazing - the whole 90 minutes with the fans being back was amazing - it shows how much they've missed us and we've missed them so it's great to get them all back in.

"It makes a massive difference, having a full crowd it's like having an extra man. It's great to have everyone here and long may that continue."

On Raphinha: "We know what kind of player he is - he likes to get on his left foot and it's a great finish. Little bit disappointed we couldn't take the three points but we'll work on next week."

Have we seen the best of Leeds today? "Not yet. I don't know what was missing today - it's early on in the season, especially for me I'm trying to get my legs back into it. It's my first game since the Euros. I feel like I could be a lot fitter and a lot stronger personally.

"Every team will create chances against us it's just the way that we play - the goals they scored we could've done better but it's early on in the season and we'll keep working on it and take it into the next game."
