More from Jurgen Klopp on Harvey Elliott's performance: "Harvey Elliot was really good, the triangle on the right hand side worked out really well in the last two games, that is important for us, the understanding between Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Harvey Elliott is obviously really good.

"Three footballers on that side works really well. Harvey looked really fine, I couldn’t see that he was exhausted, he always had the ball and was trying to get through Chelsea.

"[Jordan] Henderson had no pre-season, played last week which was probably too early. This week I wanted this energy and he played a super game, same for [Andy] Robertson we wanted to try fresh legs, bring it there and let’s go."

Liverpool

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp speaking to Sky Sports: "The goal we got was obviously very deserved. I think it is a clear penalty. We forced it in that situation.

"Second half everyone thinks 'come on'. There is a definite advantage in possession, you have to outnumber them and defend them really high, but the defensive structure changes in that case that they are only defending slightly deeper but they have eight players defending that area around the box so we couldn’t use that.

"We had our shots from distance, I would have loved to have been a bit closer for the rebound but it was a good game."

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "Our press in the first half was absolutely exceptional. Chelsea are dangerous in all situations and that's how they scored the goal. I think we all agree we could have defended it better.

"Everything was enjoyable apart from the result. I saw two very good football teams. It was a great first half from us and actually a good second one because it's so tricky when you play against nine defenders and have to create and create.

"Could we have done better? Yes. But it's early in the season.

"For sure we should have made more of the advantage. We have one point more than before so let's carry on.

"I think it was a clear handball. I was happy with the first half performance - even though we were 1-0 down. I would have loved us to have a bit more greed and determination. Apart from that I liked the game, I liked the atmosphere."

On 18-year-old Harvey Elliott's impact: "When you are old enough to drive a car you should be old enough to play football games. He is in the right place. He's a smart player. He didn't look tired for a second and kept going."

More from Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel: "With pure will, we took the heat out of the game. That was team effort at its very best.

"They never lost the shape, they tried to close the half spaces, we decided to stay in the back five and stay active in the back five because of all the runs from half spaces and fluid positions of the high full-backs of Liverpool, it was clear we would suffer.

"The red card spoils the game, I have no solution for it because maybe it is a red card because he denies a chance but it is also a deflection.

"I don't know what happens and what doesn't happen anymore. I was worried the referee looked at one photo and decided it was a red card.

"I would have liked a longer check. I can remember referees that explained if it is a deflection and it is not a very unnatural arm position it is not a penalty."

"I am absolutely happy [with the performance], we did our steps, like I said I was not so happy with the precision under pressure and the decisions we made under their pressure.

"But we are competitive and we want to stay competitive. I think our fans loved what they saw and in the end it was a deserved result and we can absolutely live with that."

"Not really," said Jurgen Klopp when asked if Roberto Firmino is OK. It's probably a muscle injury. Firmino was replaced by Diogo Jota late in the first half.

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel speaking to Sky Sports about his team's effort to hold on with 10 men: "Fantastic, I saw a strong first half, a strong Liverpool side. We were very, very good, scored the first goal, had a big chance for the second goal with Mason Mount.

"But the pressure was high, the quality from Liverpool, the energy was high. At some point you have to suffer, this is what we did and then in the last second we concede a penalty and a red card.

"At half-time we have to substitute [N'golo] Kante due to injury. Suddenly the world is upside down.

"I cannot praise the team enough, I do not know if there is a harder stadium than City and Anfield to go one man down.

"Because of Liverpool's quality and energy, for the first 10 minutes it felt like it was never going to end.

"Then, the next half an hour it was like maybe we will create a chance and score one and make it harder for them.

"For the last five minutes hopefully we survive and take a well-deserved point. Resilience and team-work was absolutely fantastic."

That was Edouard Mendy's busiest game since joining Chelsea, with six saves.

Only three Chelsea players had more than his 53 touches.

Reece James is the first Chelsea player to be sent off at Anfield in the Premier League since Frank Lampard in 2009.

The 21-year-old is the youngest Blues player to see red in the top-flight since John Obi Mikel, who was 20, against Manchester United in 2007.

Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta on Sky Sports: "I think we had the best two chances, even if they had the most of the possession.

"I think we controlled the game really, we had the chance to score the second goal even if we wasn’t at our best in terms of passing the ball. Their whole team presses really well.

“The action [Reece James] naturally does with his arm, the referee gets information from VAR he goes and sees one image and it is enough for him to give a penalty and the red card."

Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold created five chances tonight, the most a player has managed against the Blues in the Premier League since Thomas Tuchel took charge.

He has now created more opportunities for his team-mates than any other top-flight player so far this season (15).

Mohamed Salah’s equaliser for Liverpool was the 14th penalty in a row the Egyptian has scored in the Premier League.

Only Matt Le Tissier (23 in a row between 1994 and 2000) has had a longer consecutive run of scoring from the spot without missing in Premier League history.

Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta to BBC Sport on the red: "Harsh. I feel sorry for Reece. The referee got advice from VAR to give it. He went to the screen to watch one replay.

"We got the double punishment, red card and a penalty - and two yellow cards in the same action. We were angry. But you have to calm down and find a way to fight together as a team. I think the team fought and maybe we had the best two chances in the second half."

"In the end it maybe would have stayed the same. I don't like early red cards in general because it spoils the game. In the end it was a tough and hard fight. We showed great resilience and deserved the point.

"We decided to stay in a back five. We wanted to stay active and make it hard to create chances. The first 10 minutes seemed endless. The last five minutes I was actually praying we take what we deserved. It was a hard and a tough one, but a very strong second half defensively."
