    Final Score at Carrow Road

I’ve eavesdropped on a Watford and Norwich fan discussing this game on the way in, and they jokingly referred to this as a six-pointer.

But there was nervousness in their laughter. They know these are the games they need to win. The changes made by both sides today reflect a strong intent to win.

    Norwich

Norwich could lose their opening five league fixtures for the first time in their history.

Four sides have started a Premier League season with five straight defeats: Crystal Palace (2017) and Southampton (1998) recovered to stay up, but Sunderland (2005) and Portsmouth (2009) went on to finish bottom.

The Etihad Stadium is bathed in autumnal sunshine as the players warm up. Today's crowd is circa 53,000, and the highest of City's season so far - beating Arsenal and Norwich attendances by a few hundred - so it looks like people have listened to Pep Guardiola, whatever he meant by his comments in midweek.

City have just been practising their shooting, although seeing as they have scored 16 goals in their previous three home games, they seem pretty good at it already.

Sometimes things are said in the heat of the moment and it snowballs. I think Pep Guardiola is used to having a full stadium as a manger. If your team is doing well, then you want the fans there seeing your team doing well.

He would expect to see the stadium full for what they do on the pitch.

Pep Guardiola makes no reference to his midweek comments asking more fans to come to today's game in his programme notes - instead he talks about how it has been a "privilege and a pleasure" to be Manchester City manager for his 300 games in charge.

It's not clear whether Pep actually meant he wanted more support from the fans today, rather than them to come in greater numbers, which would be somewhat tricky anyway - City's Premier League crowds have not fallen below 51,000 since they expanded Etihad Stadium in 2015 - but the reception he gets from the crowd at kick-off is going to be interesting.

I think we will see a reaction, which was probably his plan all along.

  8. Guardiola's call for more home fans 'uncalled for'published at 14:40 British Summer Time 18 September 2021

Man City v Southampton (15:00 BST)

    Manchester City

A row has broken out at Manchester City...

A leading City supporters group says manager Pep Guardiola's call for more fans to attend their Premier League game with Southampton is "disappointing and uncalled for".

After Wednesday's Champions League win over RB Leipzig, Guardiola said he "would like more people" on Saturday.

Kevin Parker, general secretary of City's official supporters' club, said the comments were "frustrating".

"It's not factual, our attendances are generally excellent," he added.

"He [Guardiola] doesn't understand the difficulties that some people might have getting to a game on a Wednesday evening at 8pm."

Attendances for City's Champions League games at home have tended to be lower than those for Premier League games.

The Etihad Stadium capacity is about 55,000 and there was a crowd of 38,062 against RB Leipzig, with the away section virtually empty.

The big news at Burnley this week has been the new four-year contract manager Sean Dyche has signed with the club.

Dyche is the third longest serving manager in the top four English divisions and will celebrate nine years in the role next month.

New owner Alan Pace said it was 'important for everyone to get this deal over the line'.

As for Dyche, in his programme notes, he says this: "We've all been on quite a journey since we arrived here nearly nine years ago and we had no hesitation in agreeing a new contract."

Ah, yeah, Sean Dyche signed a new deal at Burnley.

The Clarets boss has agreed a new four-year contract keeping him at the club until the end of the 2024-25 season.

Assistant manager Ian Woan has also signed a new four-year deal with the Clarets, who are playing in the Premier League for the sixth successive season.

Dyche, 50, has been at Burnley since 2012 and is the longest-serving manager in the Premier League.

That had to happen, right, especially if Burnley want to continue to defy the odds? Tough to imagine any other manager getting a tune out of a squad that is so sculpted in their manager's image.

The Liverpool players have just been warmly applauded onto the pitch.

There are a few milestones among the squad today as Virgil van Dijk makes his 100th league appearance for the club.

Mohamed Salah is making his 150th appearance, while Sadio Mane is one off 100 goals in all competitions for the club.

Salah needs two goals to reach a century in the Premier League for Liverpool. His 100 goals to date include two for Chelsea.

Jordan Henderson also captains the side for the 200th time in all competitions.
