Here are the defensive issues Scholesy was talking about...

Manchester United have conceded first in nine of their 14 Champions League games under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

They have failed to keep a clean sheet in eight consecutive matches in the competition.

Only Norwich (28) and Leicester (25) have conceded more goals in all competitions among Premier League sides this season than United (23).

Former Man Utd midfielder Paul Scholes on BT Sport: "Tonight was again a little bit messy. As soon as Raphael Varane went off, I know they were 1-0 down, it went all over the place again, really shaky. The quality in the middle of the pitch was not great.

"Harry Maguire... I don’t know if he is has injured or has a hangover from the Euros, it just does not look right. He is all over the place.

"Pep [Guardiola] would think he has got a good chance of winning the derby on Saturday. With no Varane it makes it more difficult for United. They have quality to score goals and create chances but United have to defend properly.

"If it was not for that second goal it was a mess. Again, Cristiano Ronaldo has pulled his team out of the mire from a poor second half. It’s just instinctive, he knows where the goal is, it’s just technique and what more can you say about this lad."

Here are the BT pundits reflecting on Paul Pogba's performance tonight.

Rio Ferdinand: “I though he took liberties a few times, he was a bit sloppy. Sometimes you just need to be told ‘sharpen up, play one or two touch’.

“He needs to be telling himself and he didn’t do well enough. There are not those [critical] conversations going on in our changing room.

“There’s not a player in the world that starts every game perfectly.”

Paul Scholes: “He needs somebody talking to him all the time, someone there who he totally respects and is experienced.

“He is a really experienced player but he will get to 35 and will be doing the same stupid stuff – stud-rolling the ball and people know it.

“The biggest thing with the player is his concentration – he goes away with the fairies sometimes.

“At Juventus he was excellent and that’s why we signed him but you look at [players around him] – [Andrea] Pirlo, [Giorgio] Chiellini, [Gianluigi] Buffon, an aggressive manager, telling him all the time and he will need that kind of treatment until he is 35.”

    Leon Osman
Former Everton midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

When it comes to what United will do against City - can you play XI at the back?

When there's no pressure on the ball they need someone sweeping up - when Harry Maguire and Eric Bailly were playing in a back three the distances between them were massive and there was no one there just sweeping up. It needs to be Victor Lindelof because I don't know who else could come in - in a back four, Maguire in the middle hasn't got the pace to sweep up.

They need to get people behind the ball because you can't give those kind of spaces to Man City because they will punish you.

  8. 'We came up against an incredible player'published at 22:40 Greenwich Mean Time 2 November 2021

    FT: Atalanta 2-2 Man Utd

Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini, asked how frustrating the result is: "On a scale of one to 100, 1,000. We believed we could do it. It looked like they were all out of puff but we came up against an incredible player tonight. We can still make it through. It is still in our own hands.

"On Saturday we equalised in the last minute against Lazio, that is part and parcel of football. We deserved to win tonight but we have to accept the result."

  9. 'Torn apart by a good striker'published at 22:37 Greenwich Mean Time 2 November 2021

    FT: Atalanta 2-2 Man Utd

    BT Sport

Former Chelsea and Juventus striker Eniola Aluko: "Chelsea have played with new players - Romlu Lukaku is out, Timo Werner is out - but you look at United and it's like it’s a one-man band.

"What else can Manchester United do to get the results? Cristiano Ronaldo can’t keep bailing them out.

"Defensively they have come up against a striker in [Duvan] Zapata that ran them ragged. Is Manchester United’s backline good enough?

"It looks like they can get torn apart by a good striker."

  11. 'Ronaldo is just incredible'published at 22:30 Greenwich Mean Time 2 November 2021

    FT: Atalanta 2-2 Man Utd

    Manchester United

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on BT Sport: "It is a tight game, flowed both ways, their two goals were very tight and we thought the first was offside, I thought he interfered with David de Gea's view but Cristiano (Ronaldo) is just incredible if there is anyone you want a chance to fall to and a difficult chance, it is just incredible...

"That is football, no one can question the character of these players, because they don't ever give up and give in, they just keep going. We had to make changes and they worked.

"The goal was a proper team goal, great quality on the passing, four or five or six passes before that little exchange as well.

"You don't plan to concede a goal, I thought it was offside, usually he would save that one. The atmosphere was electric, very physical and hard to play against."

Is the Messi-Ronaldo debate getting easier? The former is in one of the easiest leagues in Europe and has made almost no impact. The latter is in the most competitive and dominating in the hardest of moments. The GOAT? Yes.

    FT: Atalanta 2-2 Man Utd

    BT Sport

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand on BT Sport: "People say [Cristiano Ronaldo] doesn’t work hard enough but he does the hardest thing in the game - score goals. At that critical moment he steps up - in any country, in any stadium, at any time. He just arrives on the biggest occasions and delivers.

"If United go out with that second half performance against Manchester City they will get slapped again, three, four, five goals. The intensity was not there. You look at it and you say what formation are they playing? It was in disarray. Cristiano Ronaldo saved them in the second half.

"Raphael Varane covers both sides very well and as soon as he went off they just looked so shaky, a complete lack of confidence. They went to a four and it looked like Atalanta could get through this team at any time.

"United were fortunate Atalanta didn’t score any more and the great man stepped up."

  14. 'If United get a result against City it will be a good week'published at 22:19 Greenwich Mean Time 2 November 2021

    FT: Atalanta 2-2 Man Utd

    Leon Osman
Former Everton midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

Ultimately Man United weren't at their best but got a draw out of the game. But goals are the hardest thing to come by and if you've got a guy that can score them who is world class and can get them for the team it's his job to do that and he's done that magnificently yet again. Two outstanding goals and we've come to expect that.

It's a very difficult week for United with three difficult games - they've won the first one, drawn this one and if they can get a result from the Man City game they'll put this down as a good week.

Paul Clarke: People will debate Ole all day long, but what you can't debate is the absolute quality when it matters of Ronaldo. Just amazing

Charlie: We scramble a last minute draw against the 4th best team in Italy and all is forgiven? We are not getting better! It’s the same every week! No defensive structure, no attacking plan. Are the board waiting till the end of the season to get someone, when it’s too late?

  16. 'We were a little bit lucky'published at 22:15 Greenwich Mean Time 2 November 2021

    Atalanta 2-2 Man Utd

    Manchester United

Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo on BT Sport: "It was a difficult game, I know when we play in Bergamo it is always difficult, but we believe until the end and I am so happy.

"We never give up, we believe until the end, it is a good result for us. The beginning was tough, we knew Atalanta would do a lot of pressure, they have a fantastic coach, when I played at Juventus they were always difficult to play against We were a little bit lucky in the end but that is football.

"We have to still improve, we have different players, different system, we have to adapt with each other, but it will take time. we have time to improve and be better."

Atalanta will be kicking themselves that they haven't managed to see this through to a 2-1 victory.

You couldn't see how Man United could manipulate a chance but when it falls into the path of Cristiano Ronaldo you just know what's going to happen.

Magical moment from a magical player and it was important, United needed to make sure they didn't lose that game.
