  1. Unstoppable Bayern?published at 19:55 Greenwich Mean Time 16 February 2022

Salzburg v Bayern Munich (20:00 GMT)

Bayern are one of three teams with a 100% record in the Champions League this season, along with Liverpool and Ajax.

Only three sides have ever won their opening seven games of a Champions League campaign, most recently Bayern themselves in 2019-20.

Bayern are unbeaten in their last 21 away games in the Champions League (W17 D4), since losing at Paris St-Germain back in September 2017 - the best run of any team in European Cup history.

  2. Good omens for Bayernpublished at 19:52 Greenwich Mean Time 16 February 2022

Salzburg v Bayern Munich (20:00 GMT)

Bayern and Salzburg have met twice before - in last season's group stages. Bayern won 6-2 away and 3-1 at home.

Bayern Munich have gone through on the three previous occasions they have faced an Austrian team in the knockout stages of Europe.

Salzburg have only won one of their last six games against German opponents and conceded 18 goals in those matches.

This is the first game in Champions League history with both managers younger than 35. Salzburg's Matthias Jaissle is 33 and Julian Nagelsmann is 34.

Salzburg captain Andreas Ulmer, 36, is older than both.

Inter Milan v Liverpool 20:00 GMT)

Former Inter Milan player Ashley Young on no away goals counting double, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "It used to be when playing away in the first leg, it was all about not conceding. If you could score more than one then you'd be more comfortable coming home. Whether there are away goals or not, it's all about winning a game."

  5. 'Harvey is in good shape'published at 19:48 Greenwich Mean Time 16 February 2022

Inter Milan v Liverpool (20:00 GMT)

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, speaking to BT Sport: "It is a team that makes sense for tonight because of the way we have to play against this team. We have to play in half spaces and be good one on one offensively. We have to make the difference and from there we can go and that is why we felt this line-up made sense. To share the intensity a bit.

"When we qualified, I met Harvey [Elliott] on the pitch and I said to him 'now you will be ready for the Champions League when you are back'. He is in good shape and in a good moment football-wise. He is exactly the kind of player for tonight. It is an opportunity and we will see how far it goes. If it works, it is all on him and if it does not it is all my fault."

There was a time when Fabinho was a player who did all those good things that usually go unnoticed. He still does those things but now he no longer goes under the radar. Now he’s a player who wins matches by scoring goals – that’s five in 2022 already.

And they’re not all 30-yard screamers either. He’s popping up in the six-yard box like a seasoned goal poacher, and his goal yesterday proved the difference in a tight match played in atrocious conditions. Nothing was particularly pretty about the game, but Fabinho’s intervention sends a little reminder to Manchester City that Liverpool haven’t gone away.

It also reminds us that Liverpool might not have to rely solely on Salah, Jota, Mane and Firmino for goals, because goals from midfielders and defenders will be equally as important in the final reckoning.

The Reds look well equipped to challenge on all fronts, starting at Inter Milan on Wednesday, and over the coming, important weeks, Jurgen Klopp may need to take advantage of the impressive strength in depth he now has at his disposal.

And don’t bet against Fabinho adding to his tally either!

Jurgen Klopp's man-management skills "will be tested" over the next few weeks as a result of the attacking talents he has at his disposal, according to former Crystal Palace midfielder Jobi McAnuff.

The Liverpool boss selected his tried-and-tested attacking trio for the win over Burnley with new signing Luis Diaz and 17-goal Diogo Jota on the bench, and McAnuff feels keeping everyone happy will be a challenge.

"As much as they're all good professionals, there will be an issue in managing minutes," he told BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast.

"They all want to play every minute of every game and when those big games come around, as they will, there will be disappointment for those who are not in the team."

But ex-West Ham midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker believes it is less of a problem for Klopp, with a smaller squad at the moment and "fantastic" man-management skills.

"He has a great balance right now with the right mix of players. If you were at Liverpool, where else would you want to go?"

  8. Liverpool 'want to put things right this season'published at 19:40 Greenwich Mean Time 16 February 2022

Inter Milan v Liverpool (20:00 GMT)

Liverpool are "taking big steps" towards trophies this season, according to the Daily Mail's Northern football correspondent Dominic King.

The Reds face Inter in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie this evening and King believes the appetite within the squad is for silverware this season.

"I can sense a real determination and hunger to win this year," he said on BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast.

"They want to put things right from last season and are determined to have a big day out with their fans, something they didn't get in 2020 when they won the league.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has a virtually fully fit squad to choose from and King feels the wealth of options at his disposal make Liverpool a formidable force.

"This squad is at its peak and is one of the best Liverpool teams there has been," he added.

"But they haven't won enough trophies for the talent they have - they're going to take big steps to put it right over the coming weeks."

Inter Milan v Liverpool (20:00 GMT)

Inter actually come into tonight's game after an inconsistent little spell of results. They suffered a painful derby loss to rivals AC Milan at the start of this month and followed that in Serie A with a 1-1 draw against Napoli.

No such concerns for Liverpool. They extended their winning run across all competitions to six matches with the 1-0 victory at Burnley on Sunday.

In this season's Champions League they've been red hot, scoring 17 goals in their six group wins, which included two victories over AC Milan.

Liverpool were one of three teams in this year's Champions League who completed the group stage with a 100% record, while Inter Milan fared less well but still finished second in their group behind Real Madrid.

Tonight actually represents the first time Inter have competed in the knockout rounds of this competition in 10 whole years, so they can already consider their efforts something of a win.

It has been a bit of a rollercoaster for the Nerazzurri in recent seasons. After occasionally flirting but never getting close for eight seasons, they followed up a second-placed finish with a first Serie A title since 2009-10 last season under Antonio Conte. However, the sale of star players, including Romelu Lukaku, in the summer saw Conte quit the club.

Simone Inzaghi took over and has begun to develop the side. They are competing again domestically, but do they have enough to challenge a side like Liverpool in Europe?

Simone Inzaghi not wasting a moment to pass on his message. He's giving a mini team-talk to his players in the tunnel before they come out for the warm-up.

Those Inter training tops are a challenge for the eyes.

  12. How Salzburg got herepublished at 19:25 Greenwich Mean Time 16 February 2022

Salzburg v Bayern Munich (20:00 GMT)

This is Salzburg's first ever Champions League knockout game.

In the group stages they beat Lille, Wolfsburg and Sevilla - all at home, failing to win any away games.

Their best European run (pre-Red Bull name) was in 1994 when they lost the Uefa Cup final.

"Red Bull will be aggressive in their approach to this game, and that's a good thing," Bayern boss Julian Nagelsmann said.

"They have a very good team, with a lot of young talent. It would go against their DNA if they were defensive."

There were lumps in the throats of most Liverpool fans when Harvey Elliott came back from injury against Cardiff in the FA Cup. And bang, he scored. Wow. So he has already made a romantic comeback from injury.

This is one of the great stadiums in world football and I am not even slightly worried about him. The ability he has got, this isn't Jurgen Klopp being romantic. This is Jurgen Klopp thinking Harvey Elliott is the right man for the job.

  15. Diaz joins the partypublished at 19:17 Greenwich Mean Time 16 February 2022

Inter Milan v Liverpool (20:00 GMT)

Liverpool are now that little bit better stocked in attack since the end of the group stages courtesy of the signing of Luis Diaz. Just what Inter and the rest of Europe needed.

Díaz has already scored at the San Siro this season, having netted for Porto in a 1-1 draw with AC Milan in the group stage...

Salzburg boss Matthias Jaissle says his side are preparing for "a storm" after Bayern's 4-2 defeat at Bochum.

"It is very rare that Bayern lose successive matches away from home," said the 33-year-old German, who became Salzburg boss last summer.

"Bayern are one of the best teams in the world. Thus we are prepared for the storm that awaits us."

Jaissle played down comparisons with Bayern's 34-year-old boss Julian Nagelsmann, with the pair working together at Hoffenheim.

"Julian is a step ahead of me, he is a top class coach," said Jaissle."But he is who he is and I am me. There is nothing to compare.

Bayern Munich come into this game on the back of a shock 4-2 Bundesliga defeat by Bochum.

They conceded four goals before half-time in a Bundesliga match for the first time since 1975 - but remain six points clear at the top.

"It is perhaps not a good thing for Salzburg that Bayern lost on Saturday," said Bayern forward Thomas Muller.

"When we lose like that, it scratches at one's confidence, and it pricks your pride."
