Manchester United progressed on seven of the eight occasions they recorded a 1-1 away draw in the first leg of a two-legged European knockout tie, with the only exception their Champions League last 16 tie against Real Madrid in 2012-13 (2-1 home loss in second leg).Atletico progressed twice and were eliminated once in Europe after drawing their first leg 1-1 at home.

Those results were when the away goals advantage was in place though.

The draw for the quarter-finals will take place on Friday - will Manchester United be in the hat?

There is no seeding in the draw so any team can be drawn against any other team, including those from their own country.

The final takes place at the Stade de France in Paris on Saturday, 28 May.

Manchester United manager Ralf Rangnick on Atletico Madrid: "Atletico don't mind the opposition having the ball. They have had less than 50% possession in their last league games. We are aware of that.

"It would be important to score the first goal ourselves. It's very important not to concede first.

"We are aware of that too - we want to try not to concede at all if possible, but it will be important to score the first goal ourselves."

Atletico will see that Manchester United are very vulnerable at the back. If they can get at their back four, they will get chances, they know that.

They will not come here to sit and wait. Atletico will come out quickly.

Ralf Rangnick has called for the Manchester United players and fans "to be on top form" tonight.

"We want players and supporters to be on top form, like [against] Spurs," said Rangnick.

"They can make it a very special experience for everybody. We have to create those moments."

Manchester United need to use their width, with Jadon Sancho and Anthony Elanga, and obviously they will have Cristiano Ronaldo full of confidence following his hat-trick against Tottenham. They are better on the front foot.

This is a tournament they have to look to try to win. If they get knocked out tonight then what have the fans got to look forward to? Not a lot, in my opinion.

Atletico Madrid midfielder Marcos Llorente, whose goals at Anfield in this stage two years ago knocked Liverpool out of the Champions League, said his team-mates are wary of the threat posed by Cristiano Ronaldo.

“When you have players like that, you always need to be on your guard,” he said.

“They have some other great players that play at a really high level and we have to be aware of all of them.”
