Only four players in the Real Madrid line-up have less than 50 Champions League appearances. Nacho makes his 48th, Ferland Mendy his 31st, Vinícius Júnior his 31st and Federico Valverde his 25th CL appearance. David Alaba made his 100th Champions League appearance in the first leg of this tie.

In the Chelsea line-up only Thiago Silva (97th appearance tonight) and Mateo Kovacic (57th appearance tonight) have over 50 Champions League appearances.

Former Chelsea goalkeeper Rob Green believes Thomas Tuchel's side can turn things around against Real Madrid, but said the first goal at the Bernabeu is vital.

He told BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast: "The first goal is key. We can talk about tactics until the cows come home, about the game and how Real Madrid set up and how Chelsea play, but individual performances just need to be better from last week.

"The belief went from the team. They started to rush things and you sensed there was a panic that set in. Over the course of two legs you have so much time in the game that one goal can completely change it, so we’re still in a position where one goal can change it.

"Yes, this is a Real Madrid side who are top of the league by a long way, but it’s not one that has completely won over at the Bernabeu. Carlo Ancelotti is still under a little bit of pressure so that is something Chelsea can play on, but they need to get it right and they need to get it right early."

  5. Fans' group criticises Uefa's Champions League planpublished at 19:32 British Summer Time 12 April 2022

A Premier League supporters' group has accused Uefa of attempting to return to the "discredited idea of a European Super League" with its plans to revamp the Champions League.

A 12-team European Super League was announced last year.

However, all but three clubs - Juventus, Real Madrid and Barcelona - pulled out after widespread protests.

Around the same time, Uefa unveiled plans for a revamped 36-team Champions League, starting in 2024.

The expanded competition will increase the number group stage matches from six to 10 and reserve two qualification spots to allow clubs to participate based on historic European performance instead of domestic achievement.

Uefa's executive committee will make a final decision on the plans on 10 May, but the Football Supporters' Association's Premier League Network said the proposed 36-team tournament would "entrench the richest clubs, damage the English football pyramid and rip off fans".

Norwich turned up here in yellow and Jeremy Goss did the business lads and lasses. Time to be a hero.

My only concern for Chelsea is that they have shifted to a back four. Thiago Silva doesn't like being in a back four so I will find that very interesting tonight how they contain Karim Benzema and Vinicius Junior which they struggled with massively last week - and that was in a five.

They're going for it. They need the extra body in midfield. Fair play to Chelsea, but it's going to be very difficult for them.

The first goal has to be for Chelsea.

  10. 'Tuchel's lack of adjustment against Real was surprising'published at 19:22 British Summer Time 12 April 2022

BBC Sports European Football expert Guillem Balague says Thomas Tuchel's tactics cost Chelsea in their Champions League quarter-final first leg defeat.

He told BBC Radio 5 Live's Euro Leagues: "The lack of adjustment from Tuchel and from Chelsea was one of the surprising things.

"That was helped by Benzema doing another thing that is predictable when he drops deep and helps the midfield. What happened thanks to that movement was that there was always a midfielder that was free, generally Kroos.

"It took Tuchel a long while to adapt to that and, because Real Madrid were in superiority when they had the ball in the middle, plus when they had those runs of Benzema, they were always going to defend deep and when they counter they are the best counter-attacking team in the world perhaps.

"All those things Chelsea did not adapt to and it took a while. By the point they did it and adjusted the marking in midfield, it was too late because Real Madrid were already ahead."

  11. Can Bayern hit the target?published at 19:20 British Summer Time 12 April 2022

Bayern Munich v Villarreal (20:00 BST)

Villarreal of course nicked a superb 1-0 win in the first leg but be warned, Bayern had a right good go, so tonight could end up being a wave of attacks.

In the first encounter the German side had 22 shots but only hit the target four times.

On the plus side, they probably got to do some shooting work in training as a result. And that's always fun is it not?

  12. Beaches, no night clubs - why Villarreal?published at 19:18 British Summer Time 12 April 2022

    Map of SpainImage source, Google

You likely need to have been a geography whizz in school or a football boffin to know where Villarreal actually is.

The club located on Spain's east coast continues to be a mainstay at the sharp end of European club tournaments and former player Marcos Senna has revealed being located in a quiet spot can actually help attract players with a calm lifestyle.

"Obviously, this is not a place for partygoers," Senna, who currently works as the club's director of institutional relations, told BBC Sport.

"No team wants players who are always out in nightclubs and Villarreal were so serious about that in the past that they didn't even accept anyone living in Valencia [which is around a 45-minute drive away], so they could have some control. It's not like this any more though - I'd say half of the squad now lives there, and I also do.

"If you come with the right mentality, this can be a very easy area to adapt to. We are close to the mountains and beaches, have incredible weather the entire year, the club are always playing in the first division, pay on time and provide everything you need.

"So you get here and you don't want to leave. When I arrived, I didn't plan to stay long. And now look at me, 20 years on and still loving it here."

The line-up for this season's Champions League quarter-finals contains teams from Madrid (two), Munich, Lisbon, London, Manchester and Liverpool - some of Europe's largest and most influential cities.

There is also Villarreal, a team from an industrial city of the same name in eastern Spain with a population of 50,000 and, some might say, little right to be keeping such exalted company.

But their success should not come as a surprise. Despite their size, they have qualified for Europe in 17 of the past 22 seasons.

You can read more on how Villarreal defy the odds by reading Marcus Alves' piece on them here. It's a cracker.

Thomas Tuchel got a response at Southampton. He was not happy with the performance against Real Madrid and he read the riot act.

Yes, Southampton were poor but Real will be a bit tighter you would think than Southampton were.

But there is always that threat with Karim Benzema.

  15. Werner 'may have another key moment in him'published at 19:12 British Summer Time 12 April 2022

Real Madrid v Chelsea (20:00 BST)

    Ross Mooring,Chelsea Fancast, external

Chelsea travel to Real Madrid looking to overturn a 3-1 first-leg deficit and, thanks to the removal of the away goals rule, only need to score a minimum of two goals, not three, at the Bernabeu to stay in the tie.

The memories of the recent defeats to Madrid and Brentford were exorcised with a comprehensive drubbing of Southampton on Saturday and with Kai Havertz and Mason Mount in fine form, the team knows it has the ability to create and score chances.

It will be interesting to see if Timo Werner starts again as while he notched two goals at the weekend, he could have had six all on his own. The German somehow managed a "hat-trick" of striking the left post, right post and crossbar at St Mary's.

Just as his stint at Stamford Bridge might be drawing to a close, like many Chelsea striking flops in recent memory - Fernando Torres to name one - he could have another key moment left in him, as the Blues seek to add to their World Club Cup and European Super Cup wins this year.

Of course, while the Blues need to score goals, at the back they must tie up at least one of Karim Benzema or Vinicius Jr, if not both, and with that in mind it was interesting to see Andreas Christensen retain his place in the side at the weekend.

Thomas Tuchel's sides have proven difficult to beat during his time at Stamford Bridge and will need all of that resilience and possibly more to secure another famous win on Spanish soil if they are to stay in the competition.

    Here's hoping anyway!

Chelsea have had a rough time of it in recent weeks, but they come in to this game off the back of a much-needed and very healthy win at Southampton.

They smashed the Saints, scoring six unanswered goals, with Mason Mount and Timo Werner scoring twice each. The latter also hit the woodwork 1,437,987 times.

We already know that Romelu Lukaku has not travelled to Spain because of an Achilles injury, so Werner has a chance tonight to really make himself a hero.
