Liverpool want a penalty!
Mohamed Salah goes down in the box following a challenge from Pau Torres. The ref waves it away.
Torres may be a bit lucky here. He had his hand around Salah's throat.

Unai Emery's instant reaction after Villarreal went behind was to give it the palms down gesture to tell his players to stay calm. Not so easy now as Liverpool are in command with this two-goal lead and Anfield in full cry.
Liverpool 2-0 Villarreal
I mean, they could easily get completely blown away here. Liverpool have the bit between their teeth.
Alfonso Pedraza is on for Francis Coquelin for Villarreal.

Liverpool have just turned it on - they've shifted gear. This is all about Mo Salah, he just picks the ball up and takes two people on, sets it back in and slots it in to Sadio Mane and it's great timing of the run. It's a combination of the two but they both look so sharp.
Liverpool 2-0 Villarreal
A two-minute blast that has completely changed the complexion of the tie now.
At 1-0, Villarreal's approach didn't really need to change. Now they have a big decision to make. Stick or twist for a foothold?

Jordan Henderson has been brilliant - he is so dynamic in everything he does and so selfless. He's always in the right wing and the cross comes and he gets a bit of luck but only because of how hard you're working and how good your movement is.
Sadio Mane
Floodgates, open!
Liverpool make the momentum count in superb fashion as Mohamed Salah pokes a ball through for Sadio Mane to latch on to and finish.
VAR checks it as it is tight for whether Mane is onside, but his run is timed perfectly.
Pervis Estupinan own goal
Breakthrough!
Well, it's not pretty but Liverpool won't care. They work the ball across the pitch to Jordan Henderson on the right. His cross takes a small deflection off Pervis Estupinan's boot and loops just a fraction too high for Geronimo Rulli to get a full glove on it. The ball drops inside the far corner and Anfield erupts.

If we want to win more trophies then we need to find a way against teams who defend really well. Need to be quicker with the ball.

More gamesmanship.
Giovani lo Celso goes down and clocks a bit of ball and a nearby Liverpool player's shin with his head as he drops. He's not hurt, but he stays down as long as he can string it out for.
Liverpool 0-0 Villarreal
For a moment, the Reds think they've made the breakthrough, but after Sadio Mane heads on a corner and Virgil van Dijk nods on for Fabinho to finish the flag goes up.
It is Van Dijk that is offside. We stay at 0-0.
Liverpool 0-0 Villarreal
Villarreal continue to meet pretty much every ball with a defensive header.
Torres and Albiol have been really impressive.
Liverpool 0-0 Villarreal
They do just that but Raul Albiol is there to meet it and head away.
Liverpool 0-0 Villarreal
Pervis Estupinan is booked for dragging back Mohamed Salah on the right side of the Villarreal box.
Liverpool will swing this right into the danger zone...
Liverpool 0-0 Villarreal
As you were...
Mohamed Salah's cross into the mixer is nodded back towards his own goal by Pau Torres but straight to Geronimo Rulli. Could have gone very wrong, that.
Liverpool 0-0 Villarreal
Villarreal aren't going to alter their approach.
It's all on whether Liverpool can break them down and find a way through?
The second-half is under way.

Liverpool might just have to play the long game and wait until 80 or 85 minutes and just try to tire Villarreal out. Certain players might not last, they will fatigue and also concentration comes into it. Liverpool's bench is frightening, they just have to be patient.
Luis Diaz is trying to push and run, he is quick and Juan Foyth doesn't cut in well - Diaz just needs to be a bit patient. Mo Salah is a good player to learn from in that respect because he goes quiet for a while but then comes up with something.

Andrew Priestley: Are we 100% sure that the Villarreal goalkeeper knows that he is allowed to catch the football? Iker Casillas levels of punching and parrying.
Dennis Ethan: Love it how Villarreal are frustrating Liverpool at Anfield

They may have had 13 shots, but according to Opta Liverpool's xG in that half was only 0.68.
