Villarreal conceded only two first-half goals in their 10 Champions League matches this season, including none in their five away games.

They're certainly no Atletico Madrid, but Villarreal are not shy of a bit of gamesmanship.

Francis Coquelin goes down in the box as the corner comes in and the referee blows for a foul. Sadio Mane was nearest to him, but I'm not sure there was much contact.

Liverpool are really going to have to work the wider areas, Jordan Henderson is really pulling out on the right hand side at times - they're having to really stretch Villarreal.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is found on the right by Luis Diaz. The full-back's cross is put behind by a Villarreal boot.

Liverpool's counter-pressing is very impressive. Pretty much every time Villarreal get the ball back in their own half they have limited options to pick out up top and find themselves swarmed upon in seconds.

The vast majority of the game is being played in the quarter of the pitch between halfway and the Villarreal box. Sadio Mane sets off to try and gather a pass into the area, but it has too much on it and rolls out for a goal-kick.

Oof. For a second it looks like Villarreal might be in. A fine forward ball finds Arnaut Danjuma between the two Reds centre-backs, but after checking back he can't feed in Samuel Chukwueze.

It might not have the fireworks of last night, but it's an intriguing one this. Villarreal are here to frustrate, slow it down, try and get under the home team and fans' skin. They'll be pleased with their efforts so far.

The initial corner is headed away by Raul Albiol but fired back at goal by Thiago. Geronimo Rulli opts to punch (perhaps ill-advisedly) but the referee's whistle for offside ensures he can't be punished for it.

If Liverpool can get it out to Luis Diaz he can cut in - he's one v one with Juan Foyth who is not a good one v one defender in my opinion - Diaz is the one that I think will open this game.

Luis Diaz is furious. He goes down after a coming together with Juan Foyth but the referee ignores his screams for a free-kick.

Liverpool are turning the screw. They quickly get back on it and win another corner.

Villarreal's plan to take the sting out of Liverpool is clear as they take an age of goal-kicks and any re-start. Pretty much all of the game being played in their half and this may be another night when Liverpool have to demonstrate their patience.

And now Luis Diaz gets in on the action, cutting inside from the left before firing a low shot that Geronimo Rulli saves and then grasps at the second opportunity.

Mane really should have done better with that opportunity.

He maybe just got ahead of the cross, meaning he couldn't quite get the direction on the header.

Huge chance!

Mohamed Salah gets away down the right and cuts inside before chipping in a superb cross for Sadio Mane, who had broken clear of the away defence but heads wide.

Villarreal have their first real chance to test the Reds defence from a corner but they fail to do so. The delivery is headed away at the near post.

Moments after, Arnaut Danjuma breaks through and sees his low ball smashed away by Virgil van Dijk. Danjuma had just stepped offside, though.

Already, Villarreal are taking a bit of time over their goal-kicks. Nothing egregious, but something the ref will want to keep a check on.
