Villarreal haven't got in a battle - they've just kept their shape, and sat really deep at times - they have come here to frustrate and they want to stay in this tie and they're quite happy to take it back home and stay in there and just try and nick a 1-0 at home.

They did that against Bayern Munich and that's their objective, it's no different here.

After just one added minute, the half-time whistle blows.

Liverpool have dominated, but Villarreal will be the happier side.

They've set out their stall to defend and it has frustrated the Reds.

    What a hit!

Thiago belts an effort from range that beats the diving Geronimo Rulli but smashes against the frame of the goal.

It may well need a strike like that to finally break this stubborn Villarreal resistance.

Liverpool fans again scream for a foul, but it is, in fact, a superb sliding challenge from Juan Foyth to stop Luis Diaz getting in.

So much frustration around the ground now.

Villarreal are playing a canny game, breaking play up at every opportunity, winning easy free-kicks from naive Reds play.

Rulli doesn't do catching does he?

He comes out and is well-placed to grab a chipped ball into the box from Ibrahima Konate but opts instead for a punch that keeps the pressure on.

Villarreal coach Unai Emery will be satisfied as we get to within ten minutes of half-time. Liverpool are creating half chances but Villarreal are composed and slowing the game down to suit their own purposes when they can. Liverpool, however, doing all the pressing.

    Liverpool almost caught cold!

Giovani lo Celso is found behind the Reds defence by a long ball forward, but his volley on the stretch goes over.

It is exactly little moments like this that Villarreal are looking for. Soak up everything they can and hope to make their few chances at the other end count.

The best coaches and managers foresee things happening - Liverpool have played this heavy metal football for a long time where it's just energy, hunting, pressing and flair but sometimes you don't have the players to be able to do that and that's why they brought Thiago in.

They need those type of players who can find space in pockets for these type of tight games.

    Just wide!

Luis Diaz sets up Sadio Mane on the edge of the box and after his first touch sends the ball bouncing up, he hooks an effort that deflects wide.

It is one-way traffic. Villarreal are just hammering the ball back to Liverpool and resetting.

If Villarreal can keep Liverpool out playing like this for 90 minutes it would be some rear-guard action.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is fouled on the edge of the box. This is a great chance to test the visiting keeper.

    Trent fancies it...
