Champions League semi 'really special' for Liverpool - Jurgen Klopp

Jurgen Klopp says it is "special" for Liverpool to be preparing for a Champions League semi-final against Villarreal at Anfield tonight.

It is the third time in five seasons Klopp has led Liverpool to the last four of Europe's elite competition.

Liverpool are in contention to win the quadruple this season having already lifted the League Cup, while reaching the final of the FA Cup.

"Each game should feel like a final," said Klopp.

"It is absolutely special to be a part of the semi-final, it's crazy. It's a massive game. So many coaches and players work their socks off their whole life and don't get a chance to be close to a semi-final.

"We are there so we have to cherish it and enjoy it as well."

The other big narrative at play here is Liverpool's continued quest to win a quadruple this season.

They already have the Carabao Cup in the bag, they are into the FA Cup final and are second in the Premier League with five games to go.

Tonight, is part one of their attempts to reach another Champions League final, having done so twice under Jurgen Klopp previously - in 2017-18 (when they lost to Real Madrid) and in 2018-19 (when they beat Tottenham).

Four major trophies in one season has never been achieved before by a side in one of Europe's top five leagues. So yeah, a pretty big deal.

  4. A different kind of game?published at 18:32 British Summer Time 27 April 2022

    Liverpool v Villarreal (20:00 BST)

It isn't really fair of us to expect tonight's semi-final to match up to Tuesday's at the Etihad. Few games could.

Significantly, the dynamic between tonight's two opponents is entirely different. Last night saw two of Europe's biggest hitters throwing haymakers at each other. Tonight, the underdog of the competition travels to a heavyweight trying to upset the odds again.

There is the chance that this is a far more cagey affair, with the onus on Liverpool to break down a well-drilled and safety-first Villarreal.

Last night gave us an all-time Champions League classic. One for the montage reel. A twisting, turning, elite-quality slug-fest between two of the planet's finest sides.

We can't possibly expect Europe's finest club competition to deliver to that level two nights on the trot can we?

Over to you Liverpool and Villarreal. What have you got for us?!
